OK I think I've found a Prova ECU for my BG5B MT for cheap.

From what I've read, it's a replacement ECU programmed from the factory for a cat back exhaust and intake. In the ad they mention the car it was taken from had #8 plugs(?) and a pod filter only. My first question is, is this relevant in any way? Wouldn't it reset like the stock ECU? (I have an axle back and plan to try to improve the intake in some way)

Also there are no instructions but I've also read it's a simple job to install, just unplug the old one and plug in the new one, is that right?

All the reviews I've seen have been very positive except for 2 which said they had trouble so removed it.

Thanks in advance.

The Prova ECU has a base map that Prova Japan produced for cars with a catback exhaust, and an intake (usually a pod filter). The ignition system is stock.

Basically, if all your car has is an intake and a catback exhaust, this is a plug n play module. You will find that you may need to run 100RON octane (which you may already be doing).

Honestly though, if you are planning on doing any additional upgrades to your car in the engine department (bigger turbos, single turbo etc) then you are better off waiting and buying a Link Plus or Autronic type standalone. They will be better to tune.

But yes, the Prova ECU is a direct replacement for your stock ECU.

Thanks for the reply... better late than never! I did a lot of reading but it's hard to get good info, I was wondering because Mine's and some other shops do staged tunes or custom tunes so I wasn't sure, the shop I bought it from just puts the details of the car the parts came from and let's the customer figure it out.

I've had the ECU in the car for a while now. Can't say it's made a huge difference... need a boost gauge to check but that would cost more than the ECU! I'm not planning any major mods, I would be more likely to sell it and buy something newer, and yeh I'm in Japan so good fuel and cheap used cars.
