So here is the story:

About 2 weeks ago, my moms 04 explorer had the transmission take a crap on her. Before I could give her any input, it was already taken apart at AAMCO to diagnose. $1700 just to open her up and take a look and wouldnt ya know... it is 100% shot. So $3500 later and with a new Tranny, my mom is ready to get the explorer off of her plate and on to someone elses.

When she tells me that she is looking for a new car, I instantly start talking about the outback and the forester. She listens for a little bit and then starts shopping on her own.

Fast forward 10 days. I am about to come up to Portland from Sacramento for 4th of July and my B-day (3rd). My mom calls me up to say that she thinks she found the car for her... 2010 CRV! :smt011

Dont get me wrong, they are great little cars, but for the price, my mom gets a lot more car for a subaru.

So she wants my help (being that I am in sales) to help her get the deal that she wants.

Now I am a little dissappointed that my mom didnt really give subaru a shot... but the icing on the cake is that the CRV that she wants, is at Carr Subaru in Beaverton!!!!!!!

Now I am just not sure how I am going to bring myself to negotiate a good deal for my mom At A SUBARU DEALERSHIP for a honda. I really just couldnt bring myself to do it. Picture me pulling up in my ladies Modded GG wagon and then talking numbers to a subaru salesman about a CRV... I dont even know if I would be able to sit in a subaru ever again!

So we get to Carr Subaru last night and I start pointing out the 10/11 outbacks. She takes a glance at one through the window and seems to like it.

Enter Enrique: Carr Subaru Salesman extraordinaire who was fully expecting to sell my mom on the CRV (she had called ahead and gone over everything about the CRV with him, he even just had a quick detail done in preparation of her arriving). With a little direction from myself, Enrique takes charge and starts the pitch on the outback.

After an AMAZING test drive demonstration and walk around, my mom loves it and is sold!

Way more room, more features at a lower price than the CRV, and an INCREDIBLY smooth ride!

The good news is that it looks like I have gotten the subaru bug to bite my mom. The bad news is that she is not the one to play the dealer haggle games and was quite turned off by the 1.5 hour long process of trying to sell her a used one for $1000 less than a brand new one... only to find the one she wants on Autotrader for $5k less than Carr subaru's starting price... AND IT IS LISTED ON AUTOTRADER AT CARR SUBARU!!!! Haha

I keep trying to let her know that it is all part of the process. And as much as you want to just say "this is the most I can spend, either you can help me or not", the bottom line is that even if you end up at the same price... if it only takes Enrique 45 minutes to get you at that price instead of a day or two... then Enrique is going to catch some heat from his sales manager as to how there might have been a potential for more if he would have just not "gave in".

I think she is going to be getting one within the next 5 days or so!!!

Just wanted to share my excitement with the rest of you guys!

Subarus do sell themselves pretty well. All you have to do is get somebody in one! Congrats on the convert. When she asks you to do the oil changes, you won't even have to grimace!

I talked my mother into trying a 10/11 Forester. She originally like the 01-04 and the 05-09 Outbacks but she test drove a Forester and fell in love with it. She wont be getting till the Fall probably.

i do not know if your mom is a Costco member but you can get some pretty sweet deals with your Costco card. Dick Hannah in Vancouver sells new Subarus for $500 above invoice and shows you the invoice. i do not know what kind of prices they you can get the CPO cars at with a Costco membership. if you go into another Subaru dealer and say Dick Hannah will sell it to me for $500 above invoice, they will start to work with you. Also try to work with the internet department they do not pull BS tricks they sell you at the best price they can.

All very nice tips!

The key things my mom is looking for is the moonroof and the leather... bluetooth and premium sound would be a plus. We will most likely be going to Dick Hannah later today.

Still waiting for Carr subaru to call us back...

Lithia in Oregon City, leather, moon roof, premium sound, 20,347 miles and a whopping $32,885 for a 2010.
i built a new outback for a new outback with a total price of $30,965 with only added option is the moon roof, and it comes with the harmon kardon system. seems like it would be better to buy new, for a better price.

That is ridiculous, it's more expensive. What happened to losing a couple grand when you drive it off the lot?

High demand, low supply for jap cars right now. Even toyota Europe is shipping cars to japan to meet the demand locally there.

We are about to seal the deal today or tomorrow. She will end up with the 2011 limited with everything but the All Weather Package for about $27,000 after all is said and done.

The lots around here are pretty full. And all Subarus in this country are made in Indiana now, aren't they? (I'm aware there are probably part shortages).

The Impreza and Forester are still built in Japan. Legacy, Outback and Tribeca are made in Indiana.

Carr Subaru played too many games and soured our perception of them in general. We told them what it would take to buy a car that day... an 10/11 outback with leather and moon for an "asking" price around $26-$28k... They acted like they had nothing to fit the perametters and kept trying to up my mom into looking at a car with an "asking" price of $33k.

After 2 hours of flipping salesmen, each we told the same thing, they basically said that just didnt think it was going to work and we left.

This is partially my fault for not quarterbacking the transaction like I normally do, but when we got home and started to look elsewhere, my mom finds about 3 cars on Autotrader that are EXACTLY what she is looking for. And their asking price is $25k-$28k. Wouldnt you know, all three of them are listed at Carr Subaru.

the best deal you are going to get is through the Internet Department. You play one dealer off the other to get the best price. you do it all through e-mail so you have records of what they said. if you do not want to deal with the salesmen BS go through the internet department. I will say that CARR Subaru internet department is very friendly, and not any bull s#!t that the regular salesmen pull.

Funny you say that... because the internet department at Carr is so far the cheapest on a new one with leather and moonroof.

After talking to Greg at the internet department at Royal Moore, the best he wanted to do was $29,450 for a new limited with moonroof package.

Considering that Nada has the invoice price for that same car at $27,455, I feel like she needs to get closer to the $500 over invoice route that Dick Hannah is known for.

She is also now just contemplating waiting until September for the 2012's to arrive and snag a 2011 at that point.

I hate it when salespeople (I'm a salesman) pull BS like that. Give people what they want, with some advice to go with, don't confuse them into buying shit they don't need.

For what it's worth, this coming October when my wife's Hyundai Tucson is paid off, she wants me to get her a 2011 Subaru Forester.
We have a Subaru dealership in town but they have exactly 1 of each model and that's it. We'll have to go to Houston to one of the high volume dealerships to get a deal. It was the same shit with the Hyundai. The local dealer had one of each but we went to Houston and got the same truck for 2 grand less.

Is Edmunds.com still a good site with their TMV price? We used that site to get the price on the Tucson. The local dealer said that was impossible after 2 hours of haggling.
We went to Houston, I low balled for 30 minutes and then told them the Edmunds price was as high as I would go. Thirty minutes later, we had the truck. That didn't even count the Hyundai loyalty bonus because we traded her Sonata in for the truck.

My wife is in love with the Forester. She wants that Red/Orangish color one.

i have heard that the 2012 models will not be in until possibly January because of the earthquake. what she might want to do is wait until the end of July to start haggling. they want the numbers and that is going to be one of the best times to buy the car is at the end of the month.
