Went to a friend's house for a little install/repair day:
My friend's black GT needed the exhaust fixed.
My wagon got new speakers (cheap Sony Explodes) in all 4 doors.
Other friend's silver GT got HIDs in the fogs. He just rebuilt his motor and now some other stuff to fix too.

Went to a pick and pull and got a rear sway bar from a 98 LGT. Took all of 20 mins to swap my old stock bar for this one. Car handles so much better now. I hope to get more pics of the car after I get a decent weekend to detail it.

Put on fog lights. They are not wired up at the moment. Will hopefully get done in the next few weeks. I am trying to decide between Silver Star bulbs to match the headlights or yellow Hella bulbs. Suggestions welcome!
Also installed front and rear sway bars from an Outback. The L has different mounts around the bushings on the front sway bar vs the GT/Outback. The uses bolts and tabs like on the back while the GT/Outback uses two bolts. A friend and I had to make mounts on the chassis for the front sway bar. The new mount plate will get welded in place soon.

Nice. I vote for yellow bulbs. The Hella bulbs I have aren't overly yellow, but are enough to definitely increase visibility. I don't think they are so yellow that law enforcement would harass you over them, but they will still contrast nicely with your Silverstars.

This picture really shows how old/bad the paint is on my car. I plan on detailing it before the winter.

Last weekend my friend and I independently wired up my fog lights. While detailing the car today I cleaned the fog lights and sprayed them with clear coat and put in 100 watt Hella Yellowstars. The fog lights would light up a little in front of the car with stock bulbs. Now the light goes further and reflects back better.

Went and did a photo shoot with friends after selling my grill to Geckoboy86. My friend took alot of pics so I will try to get some of his. These two are from my phone. The black GT belongs to Rubie_25GT. I'm trying to get him to make a MR1 thread. The silver GT belongs to a friend who is trying to get his SLI account activated.

Nice. Now you need bigger brakes to fill up that wheel. Gets some 02 03 WRX calipers, pads, brackets and front rotors. The new front size is 294mm rotor but the rear remains the same. If you want a bigger rear rotor. Get an 00-04 rear bracket from an outback and it's rotor (290mm). The WRX rear caliper and pad (for those years I've been told) will work with the bracket and rotor from the outback.

All you need is the part from Honda. It bolts right on in 3 mins. There is a thread in the DIY section about it. The best part is now I can see out the rear windshield when I use the wiper.

Looks like someone replaced the front bumper on your car without replacing the beam. The GT beam has holes in it for the foglight brackets.

There is a bracket that bolts to the bumper beam. The fog lights bolt into the bracket.

Surprisingly the spark plugs that came out weren't in bad shape. It is definitely idling smoother. Power seems more readily available. I didn't really play with it too much but I am happy with the results. Didn't take long either. Only about and hour and half.

It comes with a harness that plugs into the factory adapter behind the head unit. You run that down to under the seat.

The wiring harness for the sub plugs into the stock headunit. The wiring harness for the car plugs into that. It has a ground wire which I grounded behind the HVAC controls. The sub harness then runs in the center console and comes out to go under the seat. I put it under the passenger seat. My friend said I should get a second and try to make it work under the driver's seat.

I don't have the part numbers handy. They are different subs. One is from a 97 Outback and one from a 02 WRX. They both have T harnesses. One is plugged into the back of the head unit then the other into that. The speaker harness is plugged into that. Both subs are grounded.

I got both of mine used. I think the will compliment the stock speakers well. I have Sony Explode speakers and a head unit from an 04 STI. I think if you can find a deal on a used one with the harness then its worth it.

Took it out last night to adjust the aim of the lights. I think its right. It does not appear to be aimed at on coming traffic anymore. When I got the lights they had Phillips Diamond Vision in the lows (projector). Some Phillips bulb in the highs. These are so much better than the stock USDM lights. Why couldn't we get projectors from the factory? It seems like these offer much better vision and safety at night.

It was pretty easy. It came with a free installation kit from Crutchfield. The kit includes a vehicle specific wiring harness adapter to solder to the one for the headunit. The box shows which wires do what on the headunit harness and the kit tells you what does what for the car. My friend did the soldering since I haven't learned it yet. Whole installation took about 30 mins. I like it a lot.

Its part of the bumper on 98-99s and 97 GT. They are the post face lift. I've seen one oem lip for the 95-95 L bumper at the pick and pull here and it was mangled. You can swap the bumper beam, bumper cover, and grill.

Thanks man. I should also add that at the top of the gauge cluster where there is reflective tape to send the light back down in front of the gauges we added more now. Also, I may be putting the black hazard button back in with the LED. That "red" one glows way too much at night.

Installed a rear strut brace. Its an ebay brace for an 02-07 wrx. The cargo cover does fit over it and hides it well. The cargo cover also hides my hack job on the plastic strut covers. May have to get another one of those next time I go to a junkyard.

How hard was it to install?? For 30 bucks, you cant argue with that price
98legwag
09-05-2012, 10:30 PM
It was easy. Pop off the plastic covers for the rear struts. Take off the three nuts that secure the struts. Put the end pieces of the strut brace on and tighten the nuts. The center bar the brace then slides in and can be tightened down. I trimmed the plastic covers to fit back of the ends of the brace, but butchered one of them. Trimming the plastic pieces took longer than installing the brace.

Looks good. A friend of mine and I have the same bar. He came up with a good quick release for the bar. He went to Lowes and picked up two large wingnuts with the same thread pitch and now he can use the cargo space when he needs it but have the bar in all the time.
edit: Also, iirc on imprezas the torgue spec is 12-14lbs. Be careful though because if you over torque them you can snap the stud.

From what I've been reading they don't do much for sedans. Since there is a solid piece for the trunk it acts as a decent brace. The wagon doesn't have anything near the top of the struts like that.
Rubie_25GT
09-06-2012, 10:01 AM
I'll do the front instead. plus its too much of a pain t do the back from what I read. I already have a huge rear sway bar too lol You need to put on a wrx rear sway bar and a tribeca front sway bar! I'm looking for either a tribeca or a wrx front sway bar.

Turbo front sway bars are a bad fit. They occupy the same space as the N/A headers. For the front strut bar, it has to be from a BG/BK/BD or GC/GF Impreza.

Nice idea on the quickrelease.
But the torque spec is wrong. These are strut-to-body mounts, so they have to be on at least as tight as lug nuts.
I have/had the same brace in my wagon. Made a world of difference to the handling feel. Not as much as the rear sway bar, but it connects the car.

Back story: I have been kind of wanting a roof basket for a while now. I play hockey and it would be nice to be able to drive home after games with my bag on the roof, since it smells, and so my equipment will dry faster. Not to mention all the other cool uses for it. So this past Saturday a friend and I went to one of our local pick and pulls. I found a few other things I wanted along with the connectors amgarrety needed for his BFM. Since imports are in the back of the yard we had to walk past the SUVs to leave. We look over them really quick sometimes and Saturday happened to be one of those. I see an old Range Rover with a roof basket on it and go to take a look. It ended up being a Surco basket that was 50 in X 50 in. Needless to say I get it. Once we got it back to my house we put in on my car we see its about a foot wider than the roof rack on my BK. We ended up cutting 11.5 in out of it to make it as wide as my roof rack. We also discovered the roof racks on the BKs are 38.5 in wide at the front and 37.5 in wide at the back. I painted it with spray on bed liner. Anyways, here it is:

Giggity. Now we need to put some massive lights on it and a wind diffuser. Then relocate your spare tire on top of it to make roof for a camry wagon reverse flip up seat install. That would be cool :smt023

We have different tastes. No lights on the roof. Can't use them while driving. No faring since its a vertical front on the basket. Spare tire stays put. And I had a Camry wagon with one of those seats as a kid. Anyone bigger than 4 ft 6 in won't fit.

I picked them used. As far as I can tell Noltec is out of business now. I had to get new bushings for these and it was a PITA. They did make a nice difference in handling. I like the Outback rear sway bar. Its good bang for the buck. A front sway bar off a GT or Outback would be good too. They are usually cheap at junk yards. Good tires always make a big difference too. If you do the MSD coil you should the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and fuel filter while you're at it. I did and the car drove so much better afterwards.

Well, it took us 10 hours but my JDM lights are wired in and my Hella 500s are mounted and wired as well. For the JDM fogs, the sides are wired in to come on with the parking light and the projector is on my old fog wiring to work with the city lights. The Hellas have their own circuit. We also built brackets to mount them behind the grill using the bumper beam and radiator support. Since it was dark and cold I don't have pics yet. I will try to get some in the next day or two. Making the brackets for the Hellas was fun and time consuming. We made one out of aluminum that is used in dasher boards for a hockey rink and ran out of material. We then used that as a template and went and bought steel.

Where are the pics? We have spent hours trying to find some. It was a smaller turn out then normal, but still lots of cool cars.

Its alright. I don't use it much. It holds gears longer and will down shift faster when you push on the gas pedal.

I used a fog light switch. You should have a phase 1 trans. You just need some wire and a ring to attach to the wire to use to ground it. There is a DIY.

Thanks man. It took me about 3 months to decide on what wheels to get.

I want smoked JDM tails. I just need to save up first. It will get tinted come spring. I did just buy something JDM/EDM from ebay.

We found the minion on the side of the road one day. It was brand new and still had tags on it.

I completely understand, I was not faced with that much of a tough choice, since I found a good deal, but my next set will probably do that to me. I am screwed up on what color to go with!

That is fantastic, I really dig those driving lights. Do you have super tones?

Nope. I've thought about but horns work just fine. For some reason they are even louder than Rubie25_GT's. We both have stock horns.

Oh I just just asking because I was wondering if there was space behind the grille with the driving lights there.

No biggie, I'll probably skip the driving lights until I save up enough for a jdm bumper.

I got a great deal on the lights on here. It was two sets but I sold one set to a friend.

I actually have a couple sets of lights thrown around my garage. I was originally thinking about lifting the wagon and making the front end a wall of light. Then I decided to lower it, and the lights never went on.

I was asked on legacygt.com how I mounted the Hellas. We bought steel at Home Depot and cut it and bent it to the right size and shape. In order to bend it my friend heated it with a torch. It bolts to the inside of the bumper beam and to the radiator support.

I like the way this car is coming along. The progress is very smooth & involving. I am subscribed to this thread. Just wait until you get some intake/exhaust mods on. It will help with a little extra pep as well as spreading the powerband out a little.

Thanks. At this point I am doing a few small things then I plan on saving up for a while for a house. I don't really plan on doing an exhaust since its my DD and I kind of want it to be quite.

:smt023 on the lights behind the grill. I like it better than a supertone behind the grill but thats just me.
I've tried modding a couple of grills but always gave up lol. I see that you cut it more towards the front so you don't have to fill on where the plastic brace would of connected. I've tried it smoothing out the inside but its too much work.

Thanks man! Yeah I tried a couple others too. One is the WRX grill that is on Rubie_25GT's car. I gave up on it when I got a deal on the JDM I had.

Good guess but I already have a spoiler.
I want to polish them before I put them on. Got them shipped from a breaker in England for about half what I see them go for from Japan.
YamazakiSubaru- do you know if anything like this was made for the hatch area? My brother's Jetta has a stainless steel scuff plate where I have the plastic.

And yes, there were scuff plates for the tailgate too. In fact, there were a few different styles for those.

Put LEDs in the city lights and the turn assist lights on the fogs. The LEDs in the turn assist don't do much. I got "cheap" ones for those. I could've gone brighter which would have cost more.
