Someone chime in here and tell me why it isnt worth say an extra $500 to the sales price to have this warranty?

I think mom is going to end up going through royal moore if it is everything it looks like it is.

Here's my piece, buying a new car is bad. You lose money on the purchase price and it keeps depreciating for 3 years. Buy a model that is 2 years old and you save a lot and still get the majority of the "new car" features. Plus, you can "add on" a warranty later but it's better to save your "car payment" money and be your own warranty.

I agree... but looking at a 2010 outback... you dont really save as much as you would think. The resale on these is pretty frickin good... ESPECIALLY in the Pacific Northwest.

That's not nearly as true as it used to be though...

The thing I can say to the OP is that these third party warranties tend to be scams. Is the dealership offering this to you?

Oh, and I doubt that many Subarus suffer from things that would actually fall under the category of a "Powertrain" failure. ie: headgaskets probably wouldn't.

Read the warranty...

The powertrain coverage is as follows:
Engine block and cylinder heads and all internally lubricated parts including: intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump and pulley, fuel pump, thermostat and housing, valve, timing and side covers, engine mounts, harmonic balancer, flywheel and ring gear, seals and gaskets
Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case and all internally lubricated parts including: torque converter, pressure regulator valve and switches, solenoids, transmission/transaxle clutch, drums, pistons and steel plates, speedometer gears, bell housing, transmission mounts, seals and gaskets.
Drive axle (includes both 4-wheel and all wheel drive): Differential/axle housing(s) and all internally lubricated parts including: CV joints, front wheel drive axles/half shafts and wheel bearings, u-joints, prop shafts, center support bearings, seals and gaskets.

They arent the only one to do it...

There are a few doing it.

It is through the dealership, which in this case, has been there for 50 years. It covers everything that the manufactures warranty covers, but for as long as the original owner owns the vehicle.

The guy I talked to (one of the managers there) said it is on EVERY new subaru and nissan that they are selling... EVEN THE STI!!!

I bought my 1998 outback at Royal Moore Subaru in May of 2009 with 183,000 miles.

They sold it to me with a bad RF ball joint, and if it went through the shop they would have known, bad to the point of failing, and they made me drive it 100 miles to their dealership so they would fix it after I went to Portland and back 2 times.

After I found out about the Ball Joint, I also found out that they sold me the Outback with bad head gaskets, and they would fix them if I paid them $1,000 on top of the $4,605 i just spent for the car.

I wanted to trade it back in after I found out about the HG's, I bought the car on a Saturday and took it back to them on the next Wednesday.

They said they would give me $4,100 for the car as a trade in only on another car they had. So I was screwed.

I complained to the BBB and they did jack squat, and sided on Royal Moore's side.

They did fix the Ball Joint.

They also sold me the car with a badly frayed drivers seat belt which, I had replaced under Subarus warranty, at my local Subaru dealer.

I would highly recommend NOT going to any of Royal Moore Dealerships because they will not stand behind their product.

What i went through with my car I would bet your mom would have to deal with the same issue of they not wanting to fix the car.

Would not be worth the hassle.

No.

You're buying new because it's suppose to come with a warranty...including a powertrain warranty that is probably more inclusive than any other 3rd party warranty out there. Don't believe whatever they have in writing. From personal experience, you have to fight tooth and nail to get those things honored, even if you're having the work done by the very guys that offered you the warranty.

Also, a good dealership is worth its weight in gold. Find a good one, even if you have to pay a little more.

I don't agree with buying a car new, but I do understand why people do, and that the extra price you pay should be for good follow-up service by the dealership once you've bought the car.

Agreed. The warranty actually mirrors the coverages of the Subaru warranty... just for as long as the original owner owns the vehicle.

Being that my mom is set on this being the last car she buys... it seemed to make sense to me. She has never bought a new car in her life...

So what's the point then? The factory warranty is transferrable, and while it only lasts what, 3 yrs 30k? By that time every part on a new car has broken that's going to break, and the rest is just what we all deal with - maintenance.

Yeah, right. People always say this - until the next model/car/toy comes out. There's an old guy living near me who gets a new (to him) car every spring. He just keeps trading in.

hahah you would have to know my mother... she has always bought her used cars from like Hertz or Enterprise. She has had her explorer for years and honestly wouldnt be selling it if it wasnt for the bad experience with the shotty quality in the vehicle.

My mom is over 60 at this point and I completely believe her when she says that she wont be buying another car. The only reason she would is if she grew to hate the outback for some reason.

My mother isnt the type of person that feels good driving a $30k vehicle... this is the first time in her life that she has ever considered buying new and it is only because she really doesnt plan on getting another car.

Either way I agree with you huffer in that most people say that they arent going to buy a new car... but in this instance it is entirely plausible.

A friend of mine just bought an 08 WRX and the dealership gave him a lifetime warranty, and free oil changes for life.

You don't know a lot of older people in this country then. I see people around who've had their Plymouth Sundance's since they were new.

Oh I see them too, but I also see a lot more who trade their old junker for the newest Chrysler 200, Kia Soul or Chevy Cruze. I go to church every sunday, and the Bob Evans after. I live in a neighborhood built in the 60s and 7/9 owners in my culdesac are original construction owners. I'm pretty pretty close to the 60+ pulse. ;)

my grandparents had a salesman tell them that the 2005 Forester they bought will probably be the last car they ever buy. granted the salesman was a friend of my grandpas but still.

Well, if the warranty wording that you have above is everything the warranty covers, then it doesn't cover any engine electronics, which means it does not cover the same as the subaru powertrain warranty. It also doesn't cover any emissions components, most expensive of which being the cat convertors (although those are covered under the federal 8yr/80k warranty). in my experience, electronics and emissions faults are by far the most common failures on cars less than 10yrs old. It does cover a lot though, and if it is only $500, its absolutely worth it. $500 is less than one repair including almost anything that warranty covers.

So after all the wheeling and dealing... it looks like my mom is going to go with the 2.5i premium with the moonroof and all weather package. No leather for now... she can always add it later if she wants.

She got Royal Moore to match the lowest price we could find... which was Dick Hannah...

So best of both worlds... the lowest price we could find... plus the lifetime warranty.

$26,400 brand new... with the all weather floormats and a few other add ons... 110 power outlet, cargo nets, puddle lights, rear bumper cover and a few others.

She put the $500 deposit down earlier today!

Congrats to her! I'm not a fan of the styling of the new Subarus, but you can't argue with the value/features and the solid driving feel.

Edit***

Car also has the splash guards, shock sensor and interior illumination.

Mom just called me to say that she ended up getting them to install aftermarket leather with a lifetime warranty (classic soft trim) for an extra $999... So now her car is exactly what she wanted!!!

And in the time it took from when she got prequalified through her credit union (onpoint) until now, the interest rates on a new car had dropped a half of a percent!!

Now she just needs to sell her 04 explorer. Super low miles, towing package, third row seat, rear climate control and a a brand new transmission with a 10 year transferable warranty through AAMCO.

Let me know if you are interested.

I cant wait to take it for a spin next time I am up there!
