WHOA WHOA WHOA. WRX ones will NOT work on a 95. The 95-96 Legacies had a different shifter design that won't work with 97+ Legacies or 97+ Imprezas/WRXs. The only aftermarket short shifter that works is a B&M shifter ($$) and is sold @ boxer4racing(.com). If you look at the two different B&M shifter models they have on there, you can see the difference - the fork is on the shifter on the old design rather than on the shift linkage.

I'm trying to find pictures to illustrate, and I'll edit them in if I can find them.

Edit: got it, this is what a 95-96 design looks like:

This is what a newer linkage looks like:

You can see they're not the same.

so 97+ imprezas are intechangable with 97+ legacys? and 95-96 legacys are on their own?

Pretty much :(

I've toyed with the idea of swapping linkage, but all of the connections are backwards. I'd need to weld the first piece of the linkage that connects to the shifter to a 97+ linkage piece to make it work and the shifter stay bracket would have to be swapped as the ball at the bottom is a different size too.

Also - the caps on the whoa's on my first post weren't intended to yell at anyone. I just wanted the OP not to order the wrong thing and go through what I did.

No offense taken I'm just trying to understand what models and years
Are interchangeable. When I started this thread I was looking at a 95
But that fell through and I recently bought a 99 Brighton so I will definately
Be looking into the adjustable short throw shifter from Cobb for he 2.5rs/ts.

You'd be fine with a 99. The 97-2004 Legacies are compatible with the 02-07 WRXs.

ok, sorry for more questioning but on the cobb tuning website it states that the 02-07 wrx has the same part number(212315) as the short shifter for the impreza rs/ts 02-06(212315) which makes sense since the wrx is an impreza platform yada yada. but the 97-01 impreza short shifter has its own part number(211315). so which one would i order since you said all 97+ impreza kits are swappable (im assuming up to 07)
