ABS issues.

My ABS light has been on and off lately and I did the code check and found it to be 26: rear right wheel sensor when no open circuit or speed signal input

It hasn't been an issue until recently. There has been some loud clunking noises on and off. I changed the brake pads yesterday which were horribly worn down and looked at the ABS sensor but the wires all seemed to be fine from what I could see.

I'm at quite a loss of what to do here short of bringing it to a shop but that would be too much money. For the time being until I get it figured out could I just pull the fuse to turn off the ABS?

You will want to check the actual tip of the sensor. It is magnetic and sometimes get debris that covers it.


I know when I had issues with ABS it was three sperate codes... Mine ended up being a tone wheel that was broken and missing 1/4 of it.

If your code is JUST number 26... then I would say it is either debris on the end of the sensor or the sensor itself has gone bad... it happens.

Hopefully it is just debris but how do I go about getting the sensor off to check it? Do I need any special tools at all?

Here is a picture of your hub assembly with the wheel off... you can clearly see the sensor that is bent. It looks like it is bolted to the hub with one or two bolts... one of which you can see is already loosened and backed out a few turns.


You can also see how debris is attracted to the tip of the sensor.

From my understanding... one of those teeth on the tone wheel (geared wheel that runs over the gap in the sensor) is magnetic and the speed or RPM of when it passes the sensor tells the speed the vehicle is moving.

The sensor is magnetic. The tone wheel is ferrous. As the tone wheel spins in front of the magnet, it changes the magnetic field and causes an AC voltage to be generated. The frequency of the AC voltage corresponds to a certain speed.

there is definitely something wrong with my tone wheel. I lack many tools where I am right now but was able to knock out all of this just by taking off my wheel and maneuvering a screwdriver between the tone wheel and the rotor ( bolts to get brake housing or whatever it's technical term is are rusted and I don't have a socket wrench anyway)

Haha... that is your rear brake shoe... I thought you had four wheel discs...

***Edit, that actually might be your e-brake shoe...***

I dont see any tone wheel anywhere in those pieces.

That would definatly cause an abs issue...

I think some of those smaller pieces are teeth from the tone wheel. E-brake makes a lot of sense though. before my e-brake would rarely work unless pulled all the way up to the last click (sometimes not even then) and since the ABS light it has been super tight. with all that out of the rotor area though it seems to drive quite well

Hahahahahaha funniest thing I have read in quite a while... I can only imagine the improvment removing those parts made.

My issue with the ABS light is when it is wet out. It eventually goes on and stays on the whole time im driving. When I park the car for a while even when it is still wet it is off but it eventually goes back on until the wet roads are over then you won't see it again for a long while until we have wet roads again. Last time we checked the hand held scanner I got the p0420 which I knew about and was there to fix but no ABS code..Kinda weird. Any ideas?
