how much is my engine worth?

I am doing an engine swap and want to sell my old engine. it is a 2.5 from my 99 outback with (according to the previous owner) around 80k on a rebuild, it feels good but burns a little oil. I regularly get 240-270 miles out of a tank on 100% in town "enthusiastic" driving. it always starts and never missed a beat. I just like my old engine better and have put more into it so I'm doing the swap. I was going to keep it and build it but I'm too poor for such dreaming. so how much should I be asking for it?

I sold my engine with 93,000 on it for $350 with bad head gaskets. If the engine is in good condition should fetch $500 or so.

I dont know where you find 2.5s, but I see them go between 500-1000 all the time. I would of sold mine for 800 with new head gaskets and seals.

in the Northwest the phase 1 2.5 motors are very hard to find. if you call even a specialty wrecking yard they do not have them and when they do they go fast. so they have a big markup on them.

Given the area and how hard it is to find them now, I'd say $500 as well. I bought the 01' 2.5rs motor in my 98' for like $400 and made a 300mile round trip to get it. I gladly would have payed $500 for a local one with that low of mileage.

Weird. I see 2.0 turbos full engine with accessories and turbo going for 500. Would have thought an ej25d would go for less

Outbacks are also worth a crapload around here. The 1st gens sell in the $5-6k range. That may contribute to the higher prices for the dohc 2.5s around here, since most people nuke the engine when the head gaskets fail.

Subaru's in the PNW are worth much more then other places. Our cars don't have rust either for the most part.

I have seen Shortblocks for for 300 around here. So 500-600 for a 2.5 out here isn't out of the question.

Seccond gen legacies in decent condition usually go for 3-5k around here. engines just seem to be much cheaper

Minnesota Subaru's are well known around here so rarely do you find one someone is selling at a redicuosly good price. 2.2's with tons of miles rusty as hell and gushing oil sell for 1.2k-1.5k, 2nd gens with high miles are 5k-6k or 3k with bad headgaskets, or bad clutch trans a bit less. Outbacks and wagons are usually selling so fast the markup is worse, but 3rd gens can be had at great deals, sometimes good shape lower miles and less asking price than 2nd gens.

i have noticed that the older Subarus hold up better when screwing around. my 98 and my brothers 99 hold up better than my brothers 2007 Impreza. also with the 2nd gen outbacks a lot of the ones i see have all had some sort of body damage, except for mine that was fixed before i got it, and did not know about it. it seems like the newer Subarus are a lot more fragile.

Here in Seattle area the going rate from a wrecker is $1000-1500 for a good N/A 2.5. Craigslist is $500-1000. But then again, our cars dont rust like all of yours east of the Rockies so more people tend to keep them on the road longer.
