Loooooooooooooooooooooooooong story short...
My friend and I swapped an ej22 from a 95 Legacy L into a 97 2.5 GT. After a week of turning wrenches and such, the new 2.2 is nicely seated into the GT's engine bay, all hooked up, fresh fluids and filters, the works. Everything is great.. Except the crankshaft will NOT turn [by hand, OR by the starter]. Note that the GT is equipped with the 4EAT, and the donor car was equipped with a 5spd.
So, after a week of hard work, nothing. What could be causing the freeze? Even if we fit a breaker bar onto the crankshaft bolt and turn, it won't budge. When we attempted to start it, the starter would click and attempt to crank, but it wouldn't move. The battery was fully charged. After turning the key three times, smoke came from the engine bay, I'm assuming from the starter. Seriously?
Before we connected the engine and trans [fitting it into the bay and alligning the bolt, pins, and engine mount bolts was intense], the crankshaft turned just fine. We didn't try to turn it again until the job was almost done.
The only thing I can think of.. is something between the torque converter and the transmission shaft. If anyone has any personal experience or ideas to offer, that'd be great. Thanks :smt026
