This happened while I was out delivering today. Be safe and keep a fully charged Fire Extinguisher with you at all times.
3:00 pm Commercial Garage, one of my customers.
I pull up and start walking into the garage as he is shutting off a car in the back of the garage. When he does we hear a whump as a fire starts under the hood of the car. He gets it open and discharges two large fire extinguishers into the engine compartment and gets the flames down to the size of my fist. He asks me if i have a fire extinguisher in my truck i start looking. As i am one guy runs out with the computer and i start hearing cursing as the other two guys run out. I look over to see that the fire has spread again.
3:03 The fire has reached the tank. They get an SUV out of the garage but cannot get to the rest due to the flames. I am on the phone with 911.
3:05 As the whole car gets engulfed in flames black smoke billows out coating a 400 sq ft area in thick black acrid smoke. Visibility inside the cloud is zero ft. Abandon my truck and get to safety. still on the phone with 911
3:07 wind and rain picks up and i can get my truck out. and move it to safety. I end my call with 911 and I call my store to let them know whats going on.
3:10 fire has moved to the front of the garage and the roof starts melting. Pops and explosions going off. I take a quick video and can hear sirens in the distance.
3:15 firetrucks show up fire has already started burning itself out. They put it out in a few minutes
3:40 We go to look into the garage from the front door. 3 six and a half foot tall snap on tool chests have melted down to the floor and the Lift was gone completely. 2 cars were destroyed. No plastic or interior or rubber left. Completely stripped down to the bare metal which then melted into the floor. Office and bathroom were completely charred. Huge holes in the roof. the 3 Cars within 3 to 4 feet of the building had sections that were melted completely. Fire department said they were most likely a total loss. The shop and all tools were a total loss.
he luckily had insurance and no one was hurt.
As we are talking later he tells me that he had used half of one of the large extinguishers the day before to put out a fire from wleding and thought it was good enough to last him through the next time. He said that if he would have had a full second fire extinguisher it would have put it out and that was his biggest regret. he had figured he wold get it taken care of later that week.
Don't half ass precautions. He saw his business decimated in 15 minutes. What if it had been a house?
Please be safe.
