If it were summer, I would have no problem at all driving to Maryland. But we just got the body and rust taken care of on that car and the last thing I want to do is drive it in salt. I'm definitely coming down that way to York to visit friends and go to car meets this summer, I'll gladly drop by for a shoot with your cars! Lol

I have news, and not the perticularly good kind of news. The transmission I bought won't fit into my car. The wires, sensors, and rear driveshaft mount is all different from what my car has. And trying to find a transmission in good working condition without 200k+ for these cars are getting harder and harder to find. I've been thinking about this for a while and I think it's time I cut my losses with this car and start fresh. It's not just the transmission, there are other major things wrong. It leaks gas, needs new brakes all the way around, needs a four wheel alignment, new cv axles, new shocks, and it's rotting out. For $500 I think I've gotten my money's worth for almost two years/35,000 miles of driving. So probably within the week I'll be taking stuff off and junking it, but this is only talk right now and I need to make it happen. First thing is to figure out how to get the car to the junker without a transmission. I'm thinking of renting a Uhaul and towing it there myself, then maybe I'll have enough for another car. I won't be leaving SLi, don't worry. I plan to keep a bunch of stuff to put on another car, although, my father wants me to get something "less complicated." He's strongly suggesting I get a Ford Focus but I don't see that happening.

the only thing "less complicated" than a subaru is a tractor! :smt013 , i hate hillbilly ignorance, my wifes family suffers from that disease. and your swapping an auto?? there are soooo many of those in the junk yard here in MN, i wish you lived here i could help you fix your car.... my outback was $500 too and almost 30k miles later its going very well, tho i did replace almost EVERYTHING with a basic tool set and very basic knowledge, no specialty tools needed unlike 99% of other cars that require special tools and special knowledge to fix, i striped down 2 subarus down to the frame with only a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 17mm, a pair of needle nose pliers a phillips head and a BFH, if there is something easier to work on than that id like to see it! :smt012

You said it yourself though; you got your money's worth out of the car. It not only got you around, it gave you friends, colleagues and stories that you won't forget for the rest of your life. SL-i will tip our 40 for Norman no matter what the outcome.

Thanks! I have TONS of parts, and I know how to fix Subarus and diagnosis them properly. Finding another shouldn't be too hard lol

Prodriver1- I am swapping auto to auto but the garage that has my car says only the same transmission from another 1996 outback will fit, I'm not sure how true this is because I thought Subarus were pretty interchangeable. Wouldn't a transmission from a 1997 or 1998 outback or GT fit and wire up properly with no problems? But do I want to soak another $400 into a $500 car that needs another $600 of repair? I think it's time to start fresh with something that doesn't need so much work.

I'll strip it down of everything that I put on it, engine, bumpers, spoiler, headlights, grill, fogs, steering wheel, radio, speakers, etc

Pretty much anything worth anything that can be put on a new Legacy :wink:

i love working on my car, i got it for $500, but i have spent thousands on parts and parts cars. after 3 years i have added a 0 to the 500, 10x more than i spent on the car its self and raped 2 subarus for all the parts. i will never sell it as no one in their right mind would give me what i think its worth, and it will hopefully last for a very very long time and when it does rust to the ground i will be getting another 97-99 outback so i can swap all my awesome subaru upgrades to another awesome subaru. its a car of passion for me, not a way to get around.

Well, I stripped some valuables off the car today. All that's left I'd like to take is the 2005 Legacy steering wheel, the leather shift knob, and the engine. Does anybody know how I could take it out without a lift? Could a couple of guys lift it out? Lol

The hatch is rotting from the inside out, sadly. And it's so weird because they all started to peel today, at least the terrorist hunting permit sticker and the W on WTF MATE! If I could I would just give you the hatch lol

Salvage yards will pick up the car - even without struts and wheels and transmission. My wreck was dragged onto a flat bed - it was just a shell with some glass. No interior, no ECU, no suspension, brakes etc. I still got $50 for it.

Harry- I hope I can find a Legacy that isn't rusted out, I'd like my 4th Legacy be mechanically sound 100% and look just as good. But only time and my wallet will tell.

Chad- you better believe that steering wheel is coming off, I left it on because I forgot the old one at my house when I went to strip the car lol and if they have to move the car at all they'll need a way to turn the wheels

DarkPheonix- I've seen a couple Legacy's with snapped rear crossmember's, definitely something I'm going to look at when I look at a new car. I'm sorry to hear about your loss :-(

Huffer- there's a yard right up the street from where the garage where it's parked now, I'm going to talk to them and see if they can tow it up there. I'd be happy with anything they gave me lol

It's upsetting for me because these cars are becoming more and more like the first generation Legacys, rusting out, breaking/finally falling apart, and getting more rare every day; at least in my area of the country (I can't remember the last time I saw a first generation Legacy in my town). I dont want to get deep and philosophical, but someday a generation of people will look at cars from this era a similar way we look at cars made the same years our parents were born. I used to see second generation Legacys almost everyday and now I'll see one or two every so often. It will inevitably happen though, there are only a certain amount of these cars made, and I'll find another and keep it as long as possible :grin: Just the course of time doing its thing, I'm also stubborn and don't like change, so that has a hand in it :lol:

I'm sure you'll be seeing the Spitfire this summer, Chad and I will be doing a classic car shoot with our cars sometime :grin: I'll definitely be getting another Leggy but I'll drive anything right now lol

Today I pulled more bits off, everything except the engine, and debating whether I should take it or not. Since the car is in an awkward spot it's difficult to get an engine lift in and get it out. I took off the spoiler, steering wheel, instrument cluster, shifter, alternator, coil pack, and a few misc other little things. I'm keeping my eyes open for another Legacy but I can't find anything under $2500.

I surrendered the plates back to New York State today, took the car off my insurance, and signed over the title for it to be scrapped. The owner said that I'm more than welcome to go back in a few days and get the engine if I want, he's been super cool with this situation. Much thanks to him!

I wasn't going to take the engine, but GTDrifter talked me into taking it. So I did! Why? Because its fairly low mileage, it works, it's paid for, and dual port! I'm planning on doing a light rebuild so when I get another Subie, all I've got to do it drop it in. I'm looking for a BK with a 5 speed, anything will be considered, but I want a BK because I've already had a BD, and BG :grin:

For my light rebuild of my 2.2 I'd like to:
Replace the hydraulic lifters (no more ticking!)
Replace the headgaskets
New timing rollers
Port and polish? (How hard is this to do yourself?)
Clean entire block to look brand new(ish)
Red intake manifold
Lightweight flywheel from Huffer with new clutch to drop in (when I get my new car)

It's all good man, I miss the car terrible but it was time for it to go. I want another Legacy bad, my new one has to be another second gen with a 5 speed. I'd like a wagon, shooting for a BK so I don't have to mess with removing the subframe spacers for moar low. Also strongly considering once I get my next one going I'd like to do a frankenmotor turbo, but I'd like to use an EJ18 block with 2.2 heads. Just to be different and see how that works. 2002tii's are the bomb! I was looking at one for sale on 414 on Senaca lake! A guy named Joe has a TON of rare euro vintage cars in a lot rusting away I want to take home and fix! My dad and I almost got a Rover P6 3500S from him! I'd also love to do a shoot with your 2002, my Spit, and Zepp's 510! I really need to meet up with you, I could go on and on lol

Lmfao, it's my moms car. She's letting me borrow her Buick until this snow melts and the salt is off the roads. I was going to put my Spitfire on the road yesterday but thanks to this storm in the northeast we got more snow, which means salt on the roads. So the Spitfire is going to have to wait another week or so, or until it rains and washes all the salt away.

And yes, she's got the Buick 3800 V6, probably one of the best mass produced American engines out there. Comfy, roomy, surprisingly powerful, AND I've got a trailer hitch! :grin:

The 3800 is one of my favorite engines ever... and I'm one of those people that hates GM products with a passion. It's a common engine, super reliable other than the intake manifold thing, and it has decent power. Even better with the supercharged 3800s. I've had a couple Regals, you can usually count on those engines outlasting the rest of the car.

The 3800 is one of my favorite engines ever... and I'm one of those people that hates GM products with a passion. It's a common engine, super reliable other than the intake manifold thing, and it has decent power. Even better with the supercharged 3800s. I've had a couple Regals, you can usually count on those engines outlasting the rest of the car.

Only real problem those motors have is the intake manifold's... I have replace a couple of them...

The Buick will only get me around for a week or two until I can drive the spitfire without having to worry about it desinagrating from salt on the road, I'll definitely let my Mom know about the intake manifold problem have we'll have it checked out! :smt023

Yep it's Moms. No mods are to be done except a cassette adapter for my music and probably an SLi sticker to represent the site while rocking the boat.

good! it's only temporary! hahaha, nah, they are good for transportation purposes and comfy. I have also had my fight with many 3800 blown intake gaskets and the seal between the upper and lower plenums eroding and leaking coolant near the EGR port. good to hear you will be rocking the spitfire soon. Did you find a leggy yet? and as far as a photoshoot with the ol' Bimmer, she isn't very picture ready, it needs a full restoration and hasn't been touched since '01. it is sitting in the back of my parents barn up there in NY, it will be a while before I will have garage space down here to do the work
