So I just purchased a 97 legacy gt. (ej25d, DOHC) The bodys in excellent shape, got about 170-180k on it. Ive never owned one of these, and I'm coming from working on lots of hondas. This is my new DD while I wrap up my 92 gsr integra build. I picked this thing up for 1200 bucks because it needs a new clutch, according to the previous owner that took it to the local dealership. Annyways...

After searching a bit, it looks like I should prob just get a new flywheel along with the clutch. And as long as I'm in there a Tarmac trans snout kit wouldn't hurt either. I'd like to get a good exedy or something just as good, and I'd rather have a lighter flywheel in about the 12 lb? range (nothing too crazy)... Ive used integra type r flywheels on hondas and love the response they bring out. I'm on somewhat of a budget, but I don't want junk. I'd like to keep parts to about 600 or less if possible. Here's what I'm looking at:

-an exedy ff02 flywheel with an exedy clutch kit combo from eBay (I'll look it up again and make another post... damn phone)
-a trans snout kit from Tarmac USA
-a new clutch release fork (I read that these can bend over time, they're like 20 bucks) from Subaru
-aand a new little spring for the shift linkage, also from Subaru

- I also wrote down 'bleed line' on my list after reading some other threads that said it's a good idea... anyone know what I'm talking about? lol I'm not sure what this is exactly, but someone said I should buy it haha

Does this seem like a pretty solid parts list? If you could help me out in any way please post
up. Are there any cheaper options for clutch and flywheel that people have good
luck with?

Thx guys

For exedy clutches, will the KSB04 or 15015 kits both work in my car? Either one?

Here's an eBay auction for 400 that I'm looking at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EXEDY-OE ... 255f054613 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EXEDY-OE-CLUTCH-PRO-KIT-SET-FF02-RACING-FLYWHEEL-/160507971091?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ASubaru%7CModel%3ALegacy%7CYear%3A1997&hash=item255f054613)

Here's an exedy 15015 kit for like 189 on amazon: (no flywheel)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001B5DFY ... 33-8459418 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001B5DFY6/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/191-0437033-8459418)

Here's the trans snout repair kit: (not in stock? (!) where can I get one?)

HELPO POR FAVOR GRACIAS MUCHACHOS!

I have an exedy clutch that I used for my BH5 for less than 500miles before the STi engine crippled the stock tranny.. draw back is im in the Philippines for another month and I would sell it to you with the flywheel cheaper than whats listed /\/\/\/\
there should be a thread somewhere in the for sale section

I bought my snout repair kit from smart service, http://www.smart-service.com/store-tran ... e-kit.html (http://www.smart-service.com/store-tranquil-sleeve-kit.html).
I also have an exedy clutch and it has been very good with the abuse I give it. If you aren't too far I have a brand new release fork, if shipping aint too bad I'd sell to you.

Sounds like a decent parts list. You might as well replace the engine mounts, pitch stop too while you're at it. They're only another $150 and easy to do because the engines going to be out.

Has the car had a tune up recently? Because it's very easy to do the sparkplugs and oil change when the engine is out.

You may not like the 9lb flywheels - they make shifting very sensitive and the Subaru 5MTs are nowhere near as slick as Honda's transmissions are. They thunk-thunk rather than "snickt-snickt" like Hondas. 12lbs is about as low as I'd go - and don't pair a lightweight flywheel with a lightweight crank pulley - it can cause misfires while idling or cruising.

thanks for the replies!

seriously, they're going to have to pull the whole engine and not just the trans? yea id def at least do the plugs. I can't really afford to do much in the way of extra parts, as I need to get this car on the road so I can get back to work... I'll see if I can squeeze in a set of mounts, though...

I see that the ACT flywheels are a bit cheaper than the exedy. are they any good? think a prolite would be too light and trip the CEL?

man, I would totally buy that fork from you, but I just ordered one for like 30 bucks from the stealership and I can't return it without restocking fees. horseballs!

ACT flywheels/clutches are fine.

It's actually easier in some instances to pull the engine than drop the tranny.
Either way, make sure the rear oil seperator plate is the metal version, not plastic, replace your rear main seal, when you do the clutch and flywheel.

This is what I'm currently running on my 5mt 99 LGT. Same car as yours:

Exedy 15801 Clutch Kit
Exedy FF02
Lightweight Crank Pulley
Snout kit w/snout kit bearing

While you in there you might as well replace the rear main seal *DO THIS* and the oil seperator plate. There can be had from subarupartsforyou as a kit:

http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_par ... rtid=11564 (http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=11564)
http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_par ... artid=7943 (http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=7943)

I will tell you right now, after installing the lightweight flywheel, you will hear QUITE a bit more noise over stock. The increase in performance is hardly noticeable, and after installing the snout kit.. I think I will have to install ANOTHER since the first one I got is either defective, or something is up with the throw out bearing. Its possible the guy who did it for me fucked it up.

In my opinion, if I could do this again, which I will have to in the future, I would go with stock flywheel. Unless you like hearing extra noise.

I'm running mine with a lightweight flywheel, and have had no trouble with it. Initially in the VERY VERY cold part of winter it would throw a CEL every now and again, but that went away and I haven't seen it since. It would also make more noise in the winter and would sometimes squeal almost like the throw out bearing was bad.. except it would do it while pressing IN the clutch, and not while it was released.

Be careful with the snout kits as well. Mine was either defective, or the lightweight flywheel does NOT like the throw out bearing that comes with the snout kit. Something is still a little weird with it.

Everything runs fine in my car, but it seems a little sketchy still. In the near future I'm going to have to have the throw out bearing pulled out, and replaced with another from a snout kit. I hope this will fix the weird issues I'm having. If not.. looks like I'm going to get rid of the FF02 kit, or the snout kit. If you don't NEED the snout kit, I would reccomend against it. I know most people would say its a good idea, but they haven't installed it, or at least haven't installed it with an ff02 lightweight flywheel kit.

Just my .02 cents on the setup your looking to put into your car.

I have the snout kit, stock flywheel and LW crank pulley. No issues. My snout kit was installed by a nationally ranked autoxer and extremely knowledgeable mechanic.

Yeah.. i think mine must have been defective or something. I have a video somewhere of the noise it was making when it was squealing. After a while.. the squealing went away, but every now and again I hear strange noises from the TOB.

Has anyone else had any problems with the snout kit (mine came from exeter subaru) and FF02 LW Flywheel together? Seems like that may be my problem.

If i do get the new snout kit TOB installed.. I wonder if I should have them remove the LW flywheel.. ugh. Costly decisions.

Hm, think I could get away with 10.6 lbs. on the flywheel? ACT has two versions, a 13.9 streetlite (600185), and a 10.6 lb. prolite (600180)...

Although amazon has a good deal on the exedy KSB04 kit and the act streetlite...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001B5EMS ... 33-8459418 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001B5EMS4/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/191-0437033-8459418)
There's a link in there to buy it together with the flywheel, saves money over buying 'em separately.

Also, apparently the KSB04 is the better clutch over the 15015... someone on here emailed exedy about it...

So this is what I came up with....

Subaru list the same part number for the clutch kit..

1996-99 851-590-051

1999-09 851-590-051

If Exedy makes the factory clutch kit then why would Exedy list two different clutch kits :smt017

15015 for 1997-1998 GT

KSB04 for 1996 GT

The KSB04 is also for the 2006 OUTBACK R L.L. BEAN EDITION H6; 3.0L; Non-Turbo; Gas(EZ30D) :smt017

The response I got from Exedy was

Thank you for using Exedy products. The KSB04 will work in place of the 15015. The difference is that the KSB04 is designed to be used with the later model Legacy’s due to some slight changes in clamp load and in harmonic dampening of the clutch disc.

Sincerely, Evan Cline

Sounds like KSB04 might be an upgrade over the 15015 kit since its used on the H6 and it cost less...

I may just stick with the 13.9 streetlite. 10.6 lbs. seems a like it might be a pain in the ass on a DD... especially if these transmissions are a little clunkier compared to honda (God's Chariot) transmissions.

Good choice. And use whatever PN# on the clutches is recommended for your year, make and model. It's much easier to deal with a warranty situation that way if it comes up.

I wouldnt use anything lighter than the exedy. In fact if you could get one a bit heavier.. I would.
