hey mates!!! i have a bit of a problem here, my car has a pinging rattling sound coming from the engine bay at about 5000rpm during WOT or partly throttle. especially during 4th and 5th gear at 0.8bar. i am currently running a 99 STI ej207 long block ej20g manifold, AWIC, tdo5, with pod(cone) filter, brand new NGK platinum PFR56G plugs, i am running shell vpower with octane booster. last year when i was away my friend run the car for months without a fuel filter. the car hesitates when the weather ls cold even when it gets up to temp. there is no overheating nor loss of coolant.l i am not using a turbo heatshield nor chimney. all the clamps are tightened and there is no boost or exhaust leak, so i am positive its detonation/pinging. idle is fine at a steady 900rpm in all weather conditions and power is good for street driving. but when it comes to prolonged boost application, overtaking situations, there is boost but presence of pinging so i am forced to let off. ??? PLEASE HELP!! i am using a Nissan Skyline GTR fuel pump, which was pulled off a wreck. could it be a failing fuel pump or clogged injectors.

Why/how did they run without a fuel filter? Or do you mean the pre-filter that sticks off the pump in the tank?
It could definitely be a failing fuel pump; that would be one possible explanation for the pinging, since the car would be running lean and knocking.
For extra assurance, you may want to get your injectors cleaned and flow-tested.

"I am currently running a 99 STI EJ207 long block with an EJ20G manifold"
Er, no you aint, unless you got adaptors or something so the manifold would bolt to the 207 heads.
Anyway, where abouts are yah? I'm guessing NZ, but maybe oz? Regardless of locale, you should not be running 95 octane, you MUST run 98+ octane, end of story (unless you have an ECU and have tuned for 95). And by the sounds of your odd mix of EJ207 block, with 20G manifold, AWIC, and TD-05, i'm guessing you're not running an EJ207 ECU, which will be problematic, it's possible your current ECU will be tuned for a lower compression engine, or is possibly even running too small injectors for the current setup (I'm guessing you've got a gen 1 leggy, and are trying to run the TD05 and EJ207 on the stock ECU grey injectors)
Lay down the facts on us mate, I need to know:
Year and model of car, applied model code would be handy, but isn't needed
Are you running a stock ECU and injectors, or have you changed these too?
Location, and octane fuel you are using

thanks for your feedback guys. i am using the factory boost control no boost controller. basicaly i am running stock ej20g boost, apart from the the 2.5 in turbo back and pod filter. i think i should reroute my intake pipe. possibly a ram tube to the filter. the knock sensor is in the stock possition and there are no codes being thrown, i have reset the ECU installed original subaru fuel filter and it still surges and pings at high rpm. i am afraid if i continue like this i might shag my rings/pistons or rejoin the Big End Bearing club with this new motor. there is no BP ultimate in my country. the highest octane of fuel you can get is V-POWER. now i used a retuned autronics ECU which has been tuned to run 91 octane with the same mods as mine (stock boost, pod filter and exhaust) instead of my Z4 ecu but still the same results, surging when cold(outside temp not engine temp) and pinging at high rpm. tic tic tic. il try and use some injector cleaner, if not il phisically remove them from the manifold and inspect the meshes and nozzles.

Location, and octane fuel you are using thanks man, and yes. the ej207 from a 99 version 6 STI. manifold is from a version 2 STI plus the injectors. it fits like a glove. plus pinging at 0.5 to 0.8bar that should be a little too subtle of engine load to unsettle things. i live in Nairobi Kenya.

V2 manifolds don't fit Ej207's, different bolt pattern. Either you don't have a V2 manifold, you someone fooled you into thinking whatever engine you bought is an EJ207. Post some pics up.
And you still haven't given me any car model or anything! Come on! :p

okay....nobody fooled me. i got the long block off a 98/99 STI gc8 engine. it had a red top motor, silver intercooler, coil pack offset (not in the middle of the manifold) and a vf28. so tell me which long block that is and which year it is from. previous owner was importing a cosworth long block for rally so he took off all the accesories, AC/alternator etc. i put my ej20g manifold(just been told alluminium adapters were used by my mechanic) installed the td05h turbo with the 90deg entry, fitted the legacy AWIC. its a jdm bg3 legacy txs with a turbo engine swap.

or maybe its an ej20k?? i dunno. always open for correction. donor car is a ver5 or ver6 with the lipped bumper and jdm forester sf5 Aerospec look alike dashboard...hope thats vague of a clue??? now to the main main problem here.... which wasnt my motors lost identity  but...pinging at low boost 0.8bar. please help

What octane rating is the V-power gasoline?

95ron sounds too low. Have you tried adding octane booster? If the pinging goes away with octane booster then your ecu needs a retune.
