View Full Version : 1999 EJ22 IM and electronics into a 96

Got a 96 subaru legacy with a 98 forester motor running an outback ej25d ecu. Motor just hit 295k miles and the head gaskets failed for the second time (first was at 120k, lol) due to a coolant leak that went unnoticed.

I have access to a phase II ej22e intake manifold at the junk yard and plan to mate that to an older ej22 (since the phase II motor hit something which ripped off the oil pan and they ran it till it seized, lol).

The possible dillema:
The MAF has a different part number than all other ej22's I've seen (ie. not ending in 160 or 160F), and the ECU also seems to be a one year wonder as well. I don't have access to any other obd-II intake manifolds

Questions:
Does the wierd 1999 intake manifold with the offset coil pack fit on an obd-I or standard obd-II ej22?

Is the wiring close enough that I can run the 99's ecu and MAF in the 96. If not, can I run my original 1996 ECU with the 99 intake manifold and the 96's "160F" MAF?

Anything else that needs to be changed?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a pic of the 99 EJ22 legacy intake manifold:

I also notice that it has a different throttle body, different TPS and IAC part numbers from the ej22's I'm used to. Knock sensor is wierd too in that it has a very short cable and a quick disconnect plug on it - but it may be aftermarket.

Just scored a complete 97 EJ22 with blown headgaskets and 115k miles today. It has the dreaded EGR (which the 96 it's going into does not), so I think I'll plug the port on the head and run the 99's intake manifold, ecu and MAF if it'll work. 142 HP here I come, lol. Or was that only the impreza's in 99?

Just to follow up - I ended up using the complete 97 ej22e engine in my 96, swapping back to my original 96 ecu. Everything works perfectly as it should - no CEL's or anything, despite the EGR.

Couple of observations on the phase II intake manifold and MAF: The throttle body is different for sure, but the intake manifold looks to be the same as the earlier model. The MAF won't fit the 96's plug, without modification, won't fit, and is a 3 wire vs my 4-wire cable.

Taking that into consideration, I believe the 99's ECU, MAF and throttle body wouldn't work with phase I electronics. So to use the long block I'd have to reuse the wiring harness, throttle body, ecu and MAF off the original car.

I was under the impression that all OBDII cars have EGR. My 95 at least has some EGR in it, so that's probably why you're not getting a CEL. I'm not totally sure how the systems evolved over the years, but when I got a newer intake system from a GT, it was pretty much plug-n-play.

FWIW. And so you're not talking to yourself like a crazy person in a corner with a tin foil hat on...

haha thanks, was kinda wondering,,, :) naw up here in WA i've seen weird usdm 2nd gen legacys. For ex. An obd-1 '95, and a fwd 95 with traction control, etc

well one negative thing to report...

my gas gauge is way inaccurate again, happened as soon as I swapped ecu's back to the original ej22e one.

I thought I solved the gauge issue years ago when I swapped out the fuel pump senders. Sadly not. I'll see if the motor's ecu is still at the JY and snag it if it is...

What ecu do you run when mixing blocks and heads? say ej22t (block) and ej25d (heads)

for an N/A application you want to run the electronics and ecu for the heads. For turbo, you'll want to ask either flashheart or anothernord.

phase 2 manifold not compatable with phase 1. and vise versa

the reason its a one year wonder ecu is because they revised it for the phase 2, then the next year they changed the crank and cam trigger.

sorry chief. but since you have hooked me up in the past, ill hook you up. ill see what i can do about as-close-to-free as i can get parts for you. just pay for shipping. cool?
