I have a customer that has a 2000 Outback 5 speed. Having a hard time finding one. The interchange says 2000 only, but then 01-04 are the same. Whats the difference?
I know I can retro fit an earlier trans in, but the customer will pay more for my labor making it work, then me pulling one and doing a direct replacement.

I thought 00-02 was the same, 03-04 were different as they even upgraded the speedo cluster with chrome rings. Maybe am wrong.

Every wrecker interchange list 99-one year only, 00-one year only, then 01-04... There is something that makes them not a direct swap. A sensor, bolt hole, something.

-The later ones have 8 bolt holes to mate up with the engine instead of 4, but the older 4 and the alignment dowels still work. Not sure which MY they made that switch.
-Also around that time they switched from cable to hydraulic clutch.
-I think all of the OB's had a 4.11 final drive but you can check the ratio out on this spreadsheet;

Bumping this thread instaed of starting a new one. I'm trying to figure out exactly what ratio Legacy Outbacks with a 2.5 have in manual trans. I hear from some informative people 00-04 are all 4.11, but the chart on spda says 00 is 4.11 then 01's & 02's are 3.9 and then 03's and 04's are blank. I'm finding quite a few of these buggers around but only want a 4.11 ratio since that is what my 98 Gt has and I have a spare tranny and diff.

99 was the first year for 8 bolt bell housings. My 2000 has a hydraulic clutch, so that has no bearing of why it's different from a 2001.
Still would like to know what the difference is...

Look through this. Look up carrier and go through all the different years and combos. It should list most of the ratios.
