are the 5spd trannys in the L and GT the same? and if so, if i upgrade the clutch, can it handle a turbo motor?

Hey - how about this - instead of posting twice in a thread when no-one else has posted, try EDITING your post.
Thanks!

oops.. i didnt know that was a problem? sry man

edit:

question still stands, can a leggy 5spd handle a turbo motor with a clutch upgrade?

i understand that all subaru trannys are swappable with each other, but are the wrx 5mts designed internally better than the leggy 5spds, or are they the same with just different gear ratios?

To answer your question: Yes, for a while a legacy 5spd can handle a WRX level of power (I'm referring to an EJ207 WRX, so 227hp) and if you drive it nice and don't launch, you should be fine for at least a while, but they're not really built to handle all of that power. Subaru did some coating on some parts inside the gearbox on the WRX from 03-on to improve the durability (with mixed results) but the transmissions are almost the same. A lot of WRX owners have grenaded their 5MTs driving agressively, launching, or just not knowing how to drive the car properly.

The only bulletproof Subaru transmission I know of out there is the STi 6MT which is a far superior tranny in almost every way.

If you find that you never have problems grinding gears, and you're smooth, I wouldn't worry so much about the durability of your Legacy transmission. But if you're thinking immediate power upgrades, be prepared to shell out for a newer Legacy GT tranny with the upgraded gears, or possibly finding a place that will upgrade your transmission to handle the power.

I'm actually curious what xcntrk75 did on his old red Legacy GT build for a transmission, because he was putting a lot of power down (something like 350 whp). edit: found it viewtopic.php?f=6&t=124 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=124)

It looks like he used an 05WRX 5MT which I believe had upgraded synchros and gears compared to the 02-04 WRXs. Should be a same/similar transmission that they put in the more powerful Legacy GT of that MY as well.

so would a WRX tranny basically bolt right up? or do you have to mod all the wiring/computer?

i know that the tranny would also have to match the read diff., are the front diffs build different in the WRX trannys, meaning if i do swap, the rear diff would have to come with it?

I'll repeat the mantra: Any EJ engine will bolt up to any EJ transmission. Which means, yes anything built after 1990 except the Loyale and the Justy will bolt up.

As for wiring, the only thing going into the 5MT should be the speed sensor (someone step in and correct me if I'm wrong), there really isn't much else involved unless you're swapping out a 4EAT where you have to deal with shutting a TCU up (no CELs, etc).

I don't know what the gear ratios are, but it would be good to get the rear diff anyways, as I think WRXs use LSDs and it'll ensure you match them. I'm sure there's some master thread of Impreza transmission ratios by model on Nasioc somewhere.

Hello. I am new here may need a new thread but I specifically am asking here because Wisconsin mark said the line I was looking for. "The only bulletproof Subaru trans is the Sti 6mt." I have a 99 bk L phase 2. It's got 200 miles on a fresh rebuild but stock. Will that Sti trans bolt right to the phasell 2.2? Yes I realize way more trans than necessary. But this is a lifelong project starting. I want the Sti 6mt and the Front and back LSD. What MY Sti 6 MT will bolt right in if any. Thanks for any insight.

-edit....further reading shows alot of work to get the 04 sti complete swap with the trans axles and the controller and all that. Way more than this project calls. After reading the boards it's either the JDM Sti 5mt or the 06 6mt. Leaving the stock bk axles. If the complete axles will swap from either that's the route I want to go. Cause I want the hubs and brakes off those models. JDM sti gc fhi 1 06 Wrx 2 in terms of preference of brake systems. So ultimately everything must mesh. So if I can put the 04-07 6mt. Do the driveshaft and bellhousing thing. Bolt the JDM GC Sti brakes and hubs on the stock axles that's my direction. I will put an appropriate clutch and lightweight flywheel at same time. Thanks again.

Jewbaru, As far as the WRX trans goes. If I remember correctly the front diff is a 3.90 ratio and the rear diff is a 3.54 ratio and there is a reduction in the center diff that makes up for the difference. So, yes you will def need the rear diff as well! Also, the L and GT transmissions possiblely have different 5th gears.

As far as wiring, I remember doing a clutch for on a friends WRX and iirc there was more wiring. There are 2 sets of wiring on my transmission one is for the speed sensor and idk what the other one is for.

Outback Sport, I'll repeat what Mark said. Any EJ engine will bolt to any EJ series trans. The 6 speed should bolt in, but you might need a custom driveshaft. That I am not sure on because I know on the Legacy wagons and Outback you do, but it might be different on the OBS since they are the same body as a WRX wagon depending on the year. Someone else is gonna have to chime in on that.

04-07 sti transmissions will work, the newer ones have a different bellhousing, you'll need to order the right OEM bellhousing as well. For driveshafts, you just need one off the automatic version of your car.

Thanks for your replies. I'm trying to change my username because it is misleading. If that's possible. I created it while looking at a OBS but I bought a 99 BK L 5mt. It has the phase 2. Okay I understand now the ej trans and motor will mate. Now I need to think drive shaft and if I stick with the stock BK L axles I won't need the controller or any of that. Just complete trans and t-case? Will I need to adjust the front and rear gear differential? If so I would prefer a whole axle swap with a JDM GC Sti and a JDM 5mt. If that is even possible. I know the brakes bolt on not sure if the whole axles swap. That would involve the suspension fitting and such. So if I can just put the 6mt in swap a driveshaft and its compatible with the final drive gears stock in a bk L. My knowledge is increasing with each post and further reading. My questions will become direct and technical as my knowledge goes up. Thanks for patience till then.

Thank you. So with the stock axles its just the auto trans drive shaft and the OEM bell housing of the MY Sti I buy or you mean the OEM bell housing of the auto version of my car? Thank you

Outback, its no problem. We were all there once. Take time and read up as much as you can. As far as what you said above. For the swap you would just need the transmission and the rear diff. The t-case and front diff are built into the transmission on Subarus unlike some other all wheel drive cars. So, you only need the transmission. That is why it is best to buy the rear diff and transmission together as a pair so that you know your final drives are the same. If not bad things aka broken things will happen. Also, your car should have 4.11 final drives where as STi and WRX for the most part have 3.90 final drives. Although the other day I was at my Subaru parts place and the had just got a WRX transmission with a 4.11 final drive! :smt007

I think what rogueben is saying is that if you get an 08-13 6 speed you will have to order the oem bellhousing to match your car because they changed the bellhousing after '08.
The JDM STi 5 speed is DCCD if I remember correctly, but someone else with more JDM knowledge will have to jump in on that.
