so my 99 lgt tranny was going and I bought a 98 rs tranny which I did a lil research on and found that they were like the better trannys used in the pre 98 legacys.... well my mechanic and i were tearing everything down and found out that the rs tranny is about a half inch longer than the lgt and my throwout bearing from my lgt wouldnt fit in the rs tranny. so my question is... i ordered a new throwout bearing for a 98rs, will i encounter any other serious problems with interchangibility? I thought it would pretty much be 100% direct bolt and swap, but im just curious to see what others have done with these issues or if anyone can shed any light if i screwed up by buying the rs tranny, i was also told that the gear ratios would be a lil different than my lgt but the final drive would be the same....

I hope you ordered a TSK kit for the 5mt snout... basically your trans components need to match the trans - flywheel, clutch.

This thread might help you too. Pay attention to what Storm and elislider have to say:

so i read about the tranny sleeve kit and understand what it does/helps... but dont understand why i need to order one? the tranny i bought was said to be in perfect mechanical order and no damage to gears and bearings/whatnot. as far as i know, i just need a 98rs clutch fork and throwout bearing..?

or if what your saying is true i need a completely new clutch kit for a 98 rs... flywheel, disc... etc?

The sleeve kit is to prevent the throwout bearing from creating grooves on the input shaft of the transmission causing premature wear on the bearing and lots of noise.

^true, read all night, ill do it when i put a nice tranny in, this is just to get me till i swap it. also found that the part#s for the tranny components are the same between the lgt and the rs, only difference is the tob. still need to get a clutch fork, ill update when we put everything together today

Ok so we just realized that the 98rs Tranny HAS the sleeve kit on it already.... So the tob we .ordered for the stock size is way too small.....does anyone know the part number for the oversized tob or if the subaru dealer has one

Just had to go to dealership to order an entire new kit cuz they don't sell the tob separately

Update: got the trannys all swaped in/out. feels sooo much better! shifter linkage and throw feel so much tighter/less sloppy. idk if it has to do with anything but i guess my old tranny was missing a tiny spring that fits from the shift lever to tranny? its like 3 inches long, not sure the technical term, but this tranny wasnt missing it and i think it made a huge difference too in feel

That's the spring that brings the shifter back to center when you're in neutral. Mine is broken, always has been. It's annoying.

wait... that makes so much sense, but the tranny that i was driving (without) the spring rested dead center when in neutral, but the rs tranny i put in (with) the spring, rests all the way to the left when in neutral. so instead of going left and up to hit first, i just go up... so im really confused now

Couldn't tell you that one. Does anyone know the part # for that spring though? I can't find it in the OEM parts databases.

I've been thinking of doing swap from my '99 2.5rs that has a great 5speed transmission and havin it swapped into my '00 Outback...also thinkin of putting the 5 spokes on the
Outback as well. Does anyone have a link with pics of any b4 legacys with rs 5spokes?
