would a bad shifter bushing cause the shifter to move an inch side to side (left and right not forwards and back) when the car is in gear.

feels like its in neutral

edit: and this is something that would be replaced along with a short throw correct?

Unfortunately its not that simple. Its the shifter joint that the bushing wear out in causing it. There's a DIY on rs25 let me see if I can find it.

bump on this

i need it fixed asap, the shifter is able to move and down (like up towards the roof) a 1/16th of an inch and the side to side play while in gear has gotten worse.

what part(s) do i need to replace?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Here's the DIY on RS25.com that includes the PN for the shifter joint that needs replaced.

I followed this DIY to fix my shifter. Take my advice and just replace all 5 bushings while under there. It's not easy to pull/repull. GroupN and Kartboy both sell complete kits.

This is what you want

The second link is what will fix your problem, but you'll probably need the new linkage like this:

Here's a cheapo solution to this. Total cost is around $3.

But he needs the updated linkage before doing that mod. Though I agree it looks awesome, and it way cheaper than the $35 kit that turn-in concepts sells.

That mod uses the stock shifter joint, no need for updated anything.

The stock shifter joint in all subaru's prior to 05 uses a one-piece, fused design shifter joint. There is no way to unbolt it to replace the bushings because there isn't a bolt there, it is a dowel pin, flattened on both ends, unable to be removed.

He needs the updated shifter linkage.

If you look through the DIY he grinds down one of the flat ends, taps the dowel and puts a bolt in.

Ahh, gotcha. Didn't read that far into it

Is this accurate on how to do it on a 1995 Legacy? I know they changed a few things, and this appears to be relevant to third-gen.

Nothing is changed, can you remove, dissassemble, and reassemble the modified stock joint? Or is it more feasible to buy the tic piece and call it a day

There was a redesign to the knuckle in 97, the TIC joint won't fit the older shifter assembly. Best I can remember it is as simple as replacing the bushings in the old joint. I've done it before on a 95 BK, but it's been a lot of years. When I did my manual swap I bought a 02 wrx shifter assembly and new oem joint instead of messing with the old style stuff.

/\ are you sure thats only because the return spring was no longer incorporated into the ujoint?

I'm dead positive. I can provide pictures of the shifter assembly that came with the 96 transmission and a spare 97+ shifter joint when I get back home. The return spring is still a part of the assembly until the phase 2 trannys when they went internal.

Here's the parts diagram from opposedforces.com for the 2 different styles in the second gen legacy.

Ok i see it, so in effect muse could rebuild his ujoint for less than $10 bucks, like i did with the joint from my 98.
