View Full Version : EJ25 Oil Coolers

Ok, so I used an older, automatic EJ25 block from a 98 Forrester in my 00 Legacy with a 5 sp. I swapped all the heads, intake mani, all of the goodies off the SOHC and put everything on the DOHC. I am stuck at the final step now because it seems like I may be missing the oil cooler off the DOHC block meaning I can't install the oil filter. As a note, the engine plug just beside the filter location is also awol. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not remember there being an oil cooler, or the lines related to it on the SOHC block from the 2000 legacy. If that is the case, how do I go about getting the filter to screw on with no oil cooler?

There is no oil cooler.

There is a trans cooler mounted to the back of the radiator, but only if you have an AT.

Ok, so I used an older, automatic EJ25 block from a 98 Forrester in my 00 Legacy with a 5 sp.
That's kind of a backwards swap. Most people do the opposite - when their old Phase I block dies, they replace it with the somewhat upgraded Phase II block. What head gaskets are you planning to use?

The Phase I pistons protrude from the deck slightly at TDC; probably not enough to be an issue, but I'd do some homework to make sure that's not a problem for valve clearance.


I am stuck at the final step now because it seems like I may be missing the oil cooler off the DOHC block meaning I can't install the oil filter.
The nipple that the oil filter screws onto is threaded into the block. Remove that nipple from your SOHC block and install it into the Forester block. Now you can install an oil filter.


As a note, the engine plug just beside the filter location is also awol.
The plug that is missing from the Forester block is missing because it is part of the OEM oil cooler setup. Look on your SOHC, remove the plug, install it on the Forester block.

Obviously, you're looking to undo what that thread explains how to do, but the pictures of the parts involved should help.

you dont need a oil cooler, the adapter (thing that the oil filter screws on) come in two lengths the long one is for the ones ith the oil cooler, or u can just get the shorter one (which i have) and also if u need that plug let me know, i have some. i can send it to u free + shipping.


.... benifits of working at a engine shop is that u have access to tons of obsure parts like that :D
