View Full Version : Hydraulic clutch VS Cable clutch

I've been thinking about doing an Auto to 5 speed conversion in my Outback ever since I got it, If I was to ever do it, which clutch operation should I go with? Cable or hydraulic? Is there an advantage or disadvantage with either one? Experience and opinions are very welcome! :smt020

For daily driven use, I personally like cable, especially in traffic. My Legacy has hydraulic and my Impreza has cable. Hydraulic won't slip under power and cable can, not to say it will though. My Impreza is swapped and it still doesn't slip.

cables loose their ajustment. and offen need to be ajusted. and as stated above cable clutches can slip due to being out of ajustment. IMHO the hydraulic is the way to go. they just function better.

As far as what I've researched, it's pretty difficult to adjust a hydraulic clutch. I was checking on my Outback and I don't have the hole where the reservoir is suppose to sit T_T Soooooo looks like if I ever do a transmission swap, it looks like the cable clutch is my fate. I much rather prefer hydraulic because that's what the Spitfire is but oh well. At least I have a parts car with all the goodies in it already ;)

Hydraulic sucks to get adjusted the first time. But after that you no longer have to adjust it.

Cable clutches all have the hill holder option!

Only some of the newer hydraulic systems have that feature.

It was a nice feature! But it isn't that much of problem for me if I don't have it. A luxury item for me is all =]

Edit: I'm not exactly sure how to set it up, I'd just like to make sure it shifts fine and worry about the hill holder later lol :smt002

True, but I've taught quite a few people how to drive stick in my car - it's really handy.

Ive never had hill holder on any of my subaru's. Cable or hydrolic.

And to the OP it really depends on what kind of clutch you have. I have a ACT performance street clutch and its cable style and it would make a horrible daily. You cant sit in any kind of traffic without putting the car in neutral (its very hard to press down). But with a stockish clutch its fine and easier than hydro.
