Transmission ID code

So I have a 97 BK with a 4EAT that has about 60k on it. Recently I started getting some differential noise, and so I took it to the dealer to have them check it our. They havent narrowed it down yet because they have not had it very long but the mechanic did come out and ask me what the VIN for the donor car was in case they need to order parts. I was confused because they have the Transmission ID which should tell them the year and time and probably the factory and car it went on to right? What exactly is the point of it otherwise? So basically what I am asking is, what information does the Transmission ID number contain?

it contains everything, gear ratios, time and place built, car it was in, etc. its like a vin for the trans, should tell you everything you need to know about the trans.
the only reason he was asking is because as a mechanic you cant order parts based on a trans code.
so lets say you need a sensor to go with the transmission, rather than go to the parts department with a TYZBLABLABLA number
and they have to look up what car that trans was in, then look up the vin number then order the parts, you take them the vin and they can look it up that way, its just easier.

O.K. then, I have a question for you :grin:

Do you have the magic decoder ring for tranny codes? I think I have it figured out, but the last four charactyers I finally got was from autos and the other stuff is from 5MTs. I think the last 4 translate to manual transmissions, but I'd like one concise explanation. The decoding I've come up with doesn't describe time and place built, etc. but it does describe body/trim line, model, number of bolts on hte bell housing, and some other stuff..

I've been trying to decode trannies for like 5 years, more the overseas ones (like Aussie and I think NA JDM dual range trannies), but ours too.
