I'm looking at swapping shift linkage for the newer stuff (so I can get a short throw shifter) and I'm going to do new bushings for everything at the same time. I figured that my spring should be replaced, but -

I've looked through the OEM catalogs online, and I can't find this part anywhere. Here's a picture for illustration.

Im by no means an expert, and i'm just spouting this idea without knowing if it will work or not, but is it a pretty standard spring? By the look of the illustration, it almost looks like a spring you could pick up at a hardware store.

Again, I don't know this part very well, so it might not work, but thats what I might try if I couldn't find the part anywhere online.

I'd really have to get underneath the car to tell. Sometimes their illustrations leave something to be desired. I also don't know what the tension would have to be on it. I'd think you'd want it to be pretty strong.

One of these days I'll get underneath there and get it out.

I used a pretty strong one from a hardware store, so far so good.

I looked back on a few of my notes since the new parts stuff I'm seeing doesn't have the spring like you were saying, Subaru part# 35043, which will probably get updated a couple times but should get you a start.
