I am going to swap to a 97-98 Intake Manifold because from my understanding it flows better.

My friend has a 92 Legacy LS. Anyone know if the 97-98's will work on the first gen? The intake manifold looks the same as mine.

Only thing weird about the 92 is that it is an Automatic with no EGR.

there was different manifolds for different cars. the impreza 22 manifold is different than the legacy 22 manifold if i remember right. it will work, the legacy manifold does flow just slightly better, the 2nd gen will work on the first gen but the gains are very minimal to nonexistent. also the 'choke point' isnt the manifold. its the heads they are one of the worse flowing EJ series heads. if your bound and determined to make them flow better i would say you should gasket match, knife edge and polish the manifold and heads thats where the power comes from..
but other than that you will never notice any sort of gain.
as far as EGR goes, i dont think the EGR is corilated with the transmission. in fact im fairly certain. just coincidental. anyways, you can eliminate the EGR by swapping manifolds, and pluging the port on the back of the head. however you will throw a EGR code, which will cause it to fail emissions.

That means I would have to take the heads and manifold into a shop to have them both done at the same time correct? Or how does that work?

yes, that would be correct. but for all that work i would get a 99+ EJ22. they flow way better.
still tho, i would get a 8 blolt EJ25D slap some high comp pistons, and cams in it and you would be set on power

Why an 8 bolt? SOHC?

I was actually going to build a Frakenmotor. Maybe you're right. Should just go for a 2.5. I just LOVE the abuse the 2.2 can take. 2.5 bothers me since I am hard on my cars.

Also if it's the SOHC version doesn't that take A LOT more time wiring it in then just a DOHC 2.5?

the 8 bolt came with DOHC in 99 for a short time.
and yes the 8 bolt is a very stout motor. where as the earlier, 4 bolt design had all kinds of issues. (braking cranks, spinning bearings, head gaskets, breaking rods etc.)
and the "wiring" is minimal to non existent.
the EJ22 ecu will run it and never know any different.
just take your engine harness off your manifold and it should plug and play with the EJ25.
shit i went thru 4 manifolds before i chose one. all with the same harness. stock legacy 22, the EJ25D, then JDM EJ25, JDM EJ20G WRX manifold. and that harness worked perfectly.

and for the record. the frankenmotor is junk
its taking the 2 shitty parts of two engines and combining them for a mega shitty motor.
the EJ22: great bottom end, shittiest heads.
EJ25D: great heads, really great. but shitty junk bottom end.
so you are going to put shitty heads on a shitty bottom end.. thats retarded.
the 22 heads, dont flow enough for the stock 22, so add .3 liters and now you are just starving the 2.5 bottom end. choking down the power.

I have a phase 1 motor right now. So a phase 2 EJ25 would bolt right up? I thought there was issues with that. Maybe I misunderstood.

Or is that if I swap in the SOHC motor? So look for a 99 DOHC motor.

Just looked up places local to me that have 99 EJ25's and they want around a grand for them with 150k+ on them.

subaru is pretty good about swaps. different ECUs running different engines, because all the sensors are the same.
if you go to the phase 2 some of the sensors did change but the main thing is, in 2000 and up, they turned the car to run on a map (speed/density) sensor rather than a mas air, and the cam and crank triggers got changed in 2000 so if u did use a SOHC you would have to change the cam and crank gear.

I am trying to find where the difference are between the 97-98 motors to the 99 2.5 motors. I know that the 96 ran on premium fuel and was down on power. But I don't see any difference between the 97-98 motors and the 99 motor. I have an Automatic I should mention. I do know that the 6 and 8 bolt doesn't matter. Can work around that easily.

4 and 8 bolt design.
no 6.
the 99 they upgraded the bottom end. internal changes mostly.
but a 99 will go in place of a 97

I will have to see what I can find over the course of the next couple of months. But it does look like plug and play and can be done in a day with someone who knows how to swap these.

I have a 96. I may also hunt for a 2.5 ECU later down the road after the swap. Just feel like the money I was about to spend on my 2.2 would have been a waste.
