What exactly is fender rolling, how hard is it to do, and are there any disadvantages?
i wanted to put some 17x7.5 wheels(looking at rota torques, soobydude), but what do folks have for tire recommendations? I could do a lot of searches, but I want legacy owner experience!
I like to drive aggresively on occasion, but I don't race or auto-x. I do live in Idaho and will use my stockers for winter, should I still consider an all-season ? not a ton of rain, but defintely some.....
Thanks folks, rubbing scares me.....

Fender rolling is when you roll or reshape the fenders to allow more room for the tire.
Depending on the car and how far you need to go it can be easy. There are some more professional ways of doing it but most do it yourselfers just use a baseball bat and work it between the tire and the fender.
If you try to get too much rolled you can crease or make your fenders look funny. Crack or wear the paint off, make trim not fit...
Short and Dirty DiY:
Get base ball bat or other rolling tool
Jack up car until there is a gap between the tire and fender that the tool fits into
Roll the fender with the tool, keep it even.
Lower the car bit by bit re-rolling the fender until you get to where you want to go.

For a demonstartion of this method, watch some NASCAR races. :)

That is an interesting tool. Has anyone used it?
I question how useful it actually is as many cars/trucks do not actually have perfectly round fender openings centered around the wheel, I would think the result of this might be an odd looking job....

The company that sells it "Eastwood" is a very credited restoration company. You can pretty much get anything for automotive work you need from them.

FWIW, I've got one of the Eastwood tools, and it works really well, even on cars with strange fender openings, becuase it's completely adjustable. You're only working on about an inch at a time, and transitioning the bend slowly so you don't tweak the surrounding panel.
I did my fenders first with a bat, and chewed up my paint, then picked up the tool from a friend and redid mine, as well as about 20 other cars over the years. No matter what you do, take your time to avoid fender buckling, and fully expect to repaint the inner lip of the fender to fight corrosion. I live in CA and don't have to worry about salt, but it can be a concern as you're basically creating a notch when you roll the lip up, so make sure you fill the seam with caulk or something (the fenders will look like \| when you're done.
I'm running 235/40/17's on 17x8's on a BG that's pretty low (i finger all around) and I don't rub at all, so it's definitely got its benefits :D
My rear fenders are rolled flush, and then pulled out about 3/16ths of an inch. Front fenders are stock.

If any relatively local members need the tool, I usually loan it out for $40 (the thing was originally 400, and the urethane wheel is sacrificial) but I'll do $20 or dinner at a meet for Legacy guys ;)

I run 17x7.5 and I don't rub at all normally. I rubbed today after flying off a huge bump in the road, but besides that. Don't worry about it.

Some places rent them for pretty exorbitant fees. I have one left over from my shop days that I loan out to local guys.

I rolled my right side fenders today using an Eastwood-type tool.
Normally, body harness and other lines running through the fenderwells must be relocated in order to use a roller tool, but since Subarus are so wheel-travel-conscious (aka, rally), the body harness, wiper jet hose and hood release cable have all been tucked nicely next to the upper frame rail to avoid rubbing.
I had used a body hammer and a sandbag to previously fold the lip up, but I wanted a more aggresive pull since I will soon be running 17x9 +0!!! I got about an inch or 1.25" addiitonal flare out of my stock wagon fenders without so much as cracking the paint anywhere besides right at the seam. If you use a heat gun in conjunction with the roller, the paint stays in pretty good shape.
I'll see if I can get a buddy of mine to hold a camera while I operate the roller, as requested.
Pictures tomorrow when it's light again ;)

No video or mega-flush wheels yet, but here are pics of the pull I managed to do with the Eastwood. No heat gun or bondo was used, just manpower and the Eastwood roller:

Looks pretty good for a strictly functional mod (I doubt anyone rolls their fenders for looks )

That's a nice job. It's easy to buckle the panels if you're not careful, and it looks like it came out clean. I like the lip, and that should give you both the lateral and vertical space you're going to need with the +0's.
