View Full Version : EJ22t Swap instead of doing a EJ251/D build?

so i have 2 legacy's both with there issues, my baby is a BE legacy GT limited sedona red, the other is a 1991 legacy sports sedan. I have to get rid of one of them sadly, and im at a quandary. See my BE has a EJ251 that Crank walked, but the heads are still good, and the Sports sedan has a bad tranny, I am wondering should i just Buy a cheap 251 or 25D and rebuild my BE or should i just swap my EJ22T? and how much would would be required to swap the EJ22T?

It would be pretty similar to other swaps, you need the wiring harness merged, have you considered a hybrid engine? 2.2 bottom 2.5 heads?

i have the only reason i really havent done that is i just got the 22T and would 251 heads work on it

Yup, it'll fit. But to my understanding there are a few modifications to make regarding the oil passages in the 2.5 SOHC heads. Also now that I think about it, I seem to remember another member here with a saucy taste of humor mention that it will drop your compression ratio to the about the lowest you would want to go on a street car.

really? what would i be looking at as far as compression goes and with the hybrid would i have to rewire anything?

you would have to rewire anything per say (read you will not have to merge the 2.2t harness), but you would need to wire in and tune a piggyback or stand alone engine management to run the engine combination.

EJ22T heads flow like poo
EJ22T block is where its at.

Keep your EJ251 heads and use the EJ22T block. Add some piggy back ecu and all the turbo bolt ons.

Easy peasy (with work of course)!!! and you still get to keep OBDII if you keep your heads and intake manifold.

Cool, thanks for the correction :smt023

Merging the harness is not worth the time considering the loss of OBDII and working with 20 year old sensors..

Subaru crank sensors are mostly generic and work the same over the years of development. Thats the only issue you may run into if the crank sensor is completely different then the EJ251.

why not replace the tranny in the SS and put a tmic, injectors, a td05, and a robtune? I hear his best tune is good for 275 whp, on a dyno that has stock STI's putting down 240whp. I really hate to see you scrap such a rare car for just a tranny.

i know and i dont want to scrap it, but i have to choose between the 2 and my 02 is just so much more meaningful to me

so what piggy back would i run say access port?

COBB access ports wont work with your ecu...

usually an air/fuel controller if your looking for low boost levels.. anything high and you should run a decent piggy back like an Greddy e-Manage. There are many members who have gone this route and all of them seem to be using different methods of air/fuel/ignition manipulation.

The goal is to keep the stock ECU controlling all body and basic engine functions while the rest is handled by the piggy back.

well then my question is what piggy should i use i guess? thats the number one thing ill be working on buying

Best piggyback: Greddy Emanage Ultimate.

Next best: AEM f/ic 30-1910

Minimum: Apexi SAFC

thanks man i now have to save about 1200 for a piggy back so this may take a little longer

swap trannies in the SS, sell that and use that money to turbo your other legacy, eh?
also, did you get a quote for a tune? Reputable place near me charges $500 and up for a dyno tune "with nothing going wrong."

personally if I had your legacy i'd do a wrx swap so the upgrade and tuning options would be endless. Also lets you and whoever buys the car pass emmissions easier.

If your going to spend $1200, don't get a piggy back, that's standalone kinda money.

Also, he has a point about the WRX swap, if could start my initial BD-tleg build all over I would come out a lot better, happier, and cheaper by going the WRX route.

Can you honestly tell me you can get a plug n play standalone ecu that still keeps all body functions working in a legacy without splicing?

Grow a pair and splice it, as far as I know there isn't any plug and play for our cars. My LINKecu was $1200 and can run my AC Clutch, that's the only thing I can think of that might be an issue with some standalones.

I still think your better off doing a WRX swap w/ merged harness, with open source tuning options the stock WRX ECU is practically a standalone.

yeah ive decided not to do the build, instead im going to trade my BE for a wrx and build my Legacy SS
