1997 Legacy Outback...222,xxx...six months ago, right front brake caliper became frozen...replaced everything except ABS speed sensor...Over the last several days, the shimmy I experienced prior to caliper replacement has returned and it has a pattern...hit brakes...shimmy starts....drive for five or so minutes...and it gradually stops...smooth driving....so, thinking the ABS speed sensor had malfunctioned, I disabled ABS by pulling fuse.
No help. In fact, the shimmy is more severe. However, after five minutes, it dissipates...smooth driving.
Now...I am at a loss...any ideas out there.

Service the other brake calipers and check them for faults.

Whats probably hapenning is that when you press the brakes it applies them and then they get stuck so the pad is hitting the rotor. If the rotor is warped then it would only be hitting it partially which could cause what you described. Then it gradally disappears as either the pad wears down or the stuck part eventually moves a little.
Take a look and make sure the slides move freely and that the pads are not siezed in the bracket that holds them.

Thanks guys.
As I thought about it more, the idea of the disk being warped seems more plausible. It would seem to follow that if the ABS was malfunctioning and pulsing right front brake, the heat would warp the disk...Gonna try replacing that first (which I did on the first round of problems) and see what happens.
Thanks for the input.

If you just replaced the rotor it is not going to be warped already. Did you servise only the right side or did the left side get new pads and rotor too. If you didn't do anything to the left side I would definatly start there rather than suspecting the right side again.

Back again
After driving a bit, did the usual walk around the car touching each wheel to determine if there was heat build up. The LEFT front wheel was burning up. Pulled caliper. Sure enough, one of the pistons had seized. C-clamp compressed (and a with few whacks with a small sledge) piston...pumped brakes to get hydraulics moving again...replaced caliper and wheel and....SHAZZAM...shimmy gone and brakes working properly. I did learn something that other Suby owners might want to remember...I thought that because the car was pulling ever so slightly to the right, it was the right front brake...wrong...when addressing braking issues, check all calipers and rotors.
Thanks for all the feedback folks
