How well do the HIDs work with you standard headlight?

are you planning to do black on the roof or with the hood too?
Tinobag
10-01-2011, 03:21 AM
I was going to paint the entire car Dark Gray Metallic. Thats what the hood and front bumper currently are. But I've been thinking about a white or darker black. I haven't made up my mind which one I like more, which is fine because I don't have the money to get it painted
Anyway, here's another picture...

Gecko, my HIDs actually shorted the same day you asked me that... :smt021 They did work really well. However my adjustment tabs are broken so they were aimed way to far down to be super effective.
This weekend I'm hoping to finally get my Exhaust to 100%. Its currently leaking most of the gasses out of the joint where the midpipe meets up to the cat. I don't exactly know which gasket should go there. One, because it didn't have it on when I took off the old exhaust, and two because I can't find it written anywhere.
Anyway, I finally got off my ass and filled out some job applications. I had my first interview today, and I think I'm going to get the job! Hopefully I can get some income here and start buying some parts for the car.

Okay. So true to my word, I went to the local NAPA and picked up a gasket for my exhaust (right).
http://subarugarage.com/cache/multithumb_thumbs/b_800_0_0_00___images_Page3_dscf4010.jpg
Its much thicker than the one I had in there previously (left).
I fitted it up to the joint and started the car. It was still leaking gasses almost as bad as when I had to thin one in. So I picked up ANOTHER thin gasket and sandwiched them behind the big one hoping to get a better result.
http://subarugarage.com/cache/multithumb_thumbs/b_800_0_0_00___images_Page4_dscf4018.jpg
It sealed it much better than before, but Its still leaking through the top and bottom. And now I have bigger fish to deal with... :smt011
You may have noticed my front bumper. Not that its a different color than most of the car, nooo. But rather that the air dam opening is larger than stock. I will post up my build on that tomorrow, or maybe tonight if I get bored (very likely).
Huffer
10-08-2011, 10:59 PM
You have the right donut gasket, that's all you should need - just make sure the surfaces of each exhaust pipe are clean and seal right. You may have it installed backwards.
Tinobag
10-09-2011, 06:00 PM
The cat side of the Seal isn't straight, and it has some residue on it that's caked on pretty good. I will probably clean it when I get it up onto a lift at school.
Here's my bumper build:
So I was going to paint my car "Dark Gray Metallic" (Subaru Paint code 222) And I had the bumper off. It was then I decided that if I want going to turbocharge my car I would want more room for air to get into my radiator and Intercooler. I decided widening it would be a cheaper alternative to finding and buying a GT-B limited front bumper. I went out and bought some fiberglass cloth and resin. Then I got to work.
The Paint:

Heres the car all stripped down. Notice she doesn't have a wing. I had the trunk off too, but I didn't have time to paint those.

Yeah... is that a no no?
YES! You never ever ever EVER bondo a plastic piece. The bondo cracks, and will eventually chip off! You use a certain plastic repair material to fill in any imperfections.

Fiberglass too, doesnt stick to the plastic very well. You can use the fiberglass mat but has to be with like a two part urethane glue not a resin. Once it sees vibration or just a little bump, it will crack. Plastic takes different way to fix/prep. Its kool thats how you learn.

Sadly they didn't turn out how I wanted them. So I'm going to re-do them sometime. I did however pick up a set of one-piece headlights.
http://subarugarage.com/cache/multithumb_thumbs/b_800_0_0_00___images_Page3_dscf4010_2.jpg
The lens on the right is a bit older than the one on the left. I got them off two different cars in a junk yard. I have already sanded it down and removed most of the gunk. I just need to buy some polish to clean it further.

I used 600G and 1500G wetsand paper. Then I polished them up with some "Mothers" plastic polish. The lens looks much better now. I should have some pictures up after school today.

Yeah the two-piece headlights use 9007, while my new one-piece headlights use H4s. I managed to salvage the bulbs, but I don't have the right connectors. I'm going to get them in a couple days and then solder them in. But I don't have a soldering Iron... Right now I have the 9007s jammed in there with some cardboard around them. ghetto rigged, I know. But it works.

lol, the underside of my car looks exactly the same at the moment, except its my drivers side valve cover gasket that's leaking, and there's something else leaking as well. I can't get to it til after finals!! I'd be careful about using ebay stuff. My valve cover gasket that's leaking only lasted about 1 year, and that was some ebay brand. Some of my local subie friends have had bad luck with going cheap on gaskets as well. I'm probably going to go OEM.

UPDATE: I finally got my oil changed! I had bought the oil and filter but didn't have anywhere to drain the oil. So today I just took it to a shop and got it done. I also topped off my P/S fluid, FINALLY fixed my exhaust and cleaned up the engine bay a bit.

Oh yeah, and I played around with photoshop which only made me really want to find a set of lowering springs and some struts. The problem is I don't really want to pay for new ones. (And I would prefer coilovers). If anybody can point me towards a cheap set of used H&R's or other lowering spring and struts please let me know. I do browse the RS25, SLi and NASIOC classifieds but maybe I missed something...
Anyway I'm thinking about a trunk lip for the car. I'm not really digging the mini wing and don't want to go all out wingless. Maybe like the Do-Luck (?) one for the Imprezas but I don't know how that would look and how I would manage to fit one... Ideas?

Weeelll, I have some more pictures to share with you guys on the whole process. But first let me start by saying that it took me about 3 hours to finish (once I had all the necessary parts, and because it was so freaking cold). And that the left fog light doesn't work. I haven't had time to check it because I'm working and its been freezing. Its either a burnt bulb (what I'm hoping for) or I mixed up the polarity of the wires when I soldered them in. I'll check it out later in the week when I have time and I'm not feeling sick...
Anyway. Here you go.

NEO3s from SuperbrightLEDs.com. You have to shave a tiny bit of the side of each bulb to fit perfect. But other than that, no problems at all.
On a side note I just ordered some super secret awesomeness. I have yet to learn when they will arrive. BUT I CAN'T WAIT!

I didn't have to drill any holes, but I did have to shave the edges of the DIN panel just a hair for it to fit. Its nice not having a hole in the dash anymore.
Thanks Nick! I'm going to borrow the stuff I need to compression test it before I buy it. The place doesn't have any warranties on anything. So I have to make sure its going to run right before I buy it. Luckily its really cheap.

Tinobag
02-07-2012, 11:02 AM
The ride is very bouncy because they are so stiff. It makes the overall ride much harsher because you literally feel every bump. However you have to remember that coilovers really come into their own on a track or when your going for ride height (Also very useful for track days). You deffinatly get what you pay for when it comes to Racelands, and there are better coilsovers out there. But not for this price. If you want to lower your car and stiffen up your suspention for cheap. Then buy them. If you want a smooth ride for your DD with ocasional track use and only a little bit of a drop, get some lowering springs with STi shocks.
Right now all my corners aren't level. The shop I work for has corner scales and I will be aligning and weighing the entire set up in preperation for autoX in the spring. However I haven't done it yet. I'm sure the ride will be a bit better when they are level and weighted properly.
Yes! I'm looking for a 2.2 with right around 100k on it but will take one with around 140kish lol
There is one out of a BC at a junk yard. Its got 102k on it. I'm not sure if it runs at all and I was going to do a leakdown to see if the rings where good. If your planning on rebuilding it anyway its probably just fine. I think I could get it for you for 200$

I've found a super cheap VF11. I know its a tiny turbo, but its cheap and should work to start me off. Now with downpipes and up-pipes, it uses the same mounting flange as the TD-04 right? So any DP and UP for the WRX should bolt right up correct? If I wanted to switch it out later for a larger VF-39 or a 16g TD-05 later down the road I wouldn't have to change anything right?
Excuse me. My turbo noobness is showing
nikolaus.conrad
02-16-2012, 10:21 AM
The VF11 is gonna be too small for what you're going with, however I think it will bolt up. I'm also using a VF11 to start out with but I'm going a different route right now lol. If you get a WRX up-pipe from Ebay with the headers, you will need to cut a section out of your front subframe, however, if you get the Borla knockoff UEL headers and have a custom up-pipe made you won't have to do such a thing. Garrison did that for his build, I feel it's a bit easier if you wish to unbolt everything.
Tinobag
02-16-2012, 10:33 AM
I know... its really too small for what I want. But I'm having a really hard to time finding a TD-04, which is what I would like to start out with. Once I can afford some engine managment I would love to get me a nice VF-39 or 16g TD-05. I think I'm going to have a custom up-pipe made because I want the bolt up compatablity, but I have to find a shop that will do it (not that I'm looking very hard right now).

Would it be possible to right the VF11 to another, larger turbo? Like have it for low end and once it reaches a certain threshold have it open into the larger turbo? Time to do some research on twin turbos!
nikolaus.conrad
02-17-2012, 01:42 AM
I've also thought about that, but I feel it would be a tad too complicated. However, that hasn't stopped me from dreaming! lol. I think maybe if a butterfly valve of some sort could channel air from one turbo to the other? Then we would be talking!

It was just a crazy idea, I can't even find one turbo right now. Let alone two.
UPDATE:
So I know its been a while since I told you guys what I've been up too. Sadly I've run into some trouble and its slowing things down considerably. I'm having this weird problem with my car where it will start-run-and idle fine. Then once I drive it for a while and come to a stop I can hear the revs stay high, then drop down. Once they drop the car begins to shake badly but if I give it some juice it will run smooth. However if I let it sit running rough for a short period of time it cuts out on two (?) cylinders. This isn't noticeable until you try and accelerate. Then she runs like an angry lawnmower trying to pull around 3000 pounds of car. The check engine light is on, and when i scanned it the first time I got the codes for
-EGR Flow
-Miss on 1
-Miss on 3
-Miss on 4
I reset the codes (this was about a week ago) and took it out driving with the scan tool to try and get it to do it again. Of course it didn't. A day later though, it started again and was worse. This time I was just reading the P0400 (EGR Flow). Thinking it was a bad EGR valve/stuck open/dirty. I took it off and cleaned it thoroughly (Also cleaned off the IACV and throttle body). When I put the car all back together and reread the codes I got the EGR flow, and now, a TPS code (can't remember which one, sorry :-( ) I put the car in "test" mode and checked that the EGR solenoid was working properly and that it was indeed getting power. I checked to see if the EGR valve itself wasn't stuck and operated normally. It all check out.BUT IT ONLY GOT WORSE!
I had my boss take a look at it and he recommended getting new plug wires (they needed to be done, probably never have before). So I went ahead and bought some OEM NGK's. Didn't affect the problem at all. Now the only thing that I can think of that would possibly make it run like this is the coil (unless I somehow broke the TPS). I just don't understand how it will only affect the cars performance at low RPM... thoughts? Experiences? I'm all ears.

P0267 Cylinder 3 Injector Circuit Low
P0507 Idle Air Control Revolutions Per Minute Higher Than Expected

Any ideas? I guess I could have installed the valve in my IACV backwards when I cleaned it. I will check that.

IHI VF-14! I know its small, but I wanted a turbo that will spool up fast for autoX applications. I might even go twin turbo in the future
Now I'm looking at down-pipes. Am I right in thinking this will fit?

Its made to bolt to a WRX which has a TD-04. And that uses a T3/T4 flange. So does this one right? I'm having a hard time finding info on it.
mike-tracy
03-07-2012, 12:23 AM
The ebay link has the standard subaru ej single turbo, single scroll flange, not the t3/t4.
Here's another picture of that shape flange:
http://spun-autosports.com/sales/images/SUBARU_Invida_Version_2_Polished_Downpipe.jpg
Here's the one from your turbo:
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/6231/vf14exhaustsideresized8gj.jpg
way different. So at the very minimum you'll need to get the proper flange welded onto a standard down pipe and possibly the up pipe.
Here's what the standard single/single up pipe flange looks like:

So being in NM about 2000 miles away from where I work... my car decides to start overheat. I checked everything... Clogged radiator... thermostat... coolant level. HEY SL-i! Its been SOOOOO LONG! Almost a year has passed since I updated my page. Its been mostly lazyness, but I really just don't know where to start on whats been happening. A LOT! Thats for sure. But to sum it all up:
-Drove back home in NM from PA
-Headgaskets on the 2.5 blew. I replaced them anddddd...
-2.5 spun a bearing (I believe it was coolant in the oil passages)
-So I bought a 2.2 (Dual port) and swapped that in
-Drove back out to PA
-Moved to my own apartment
-Lost my job in PA
-Moved back to NM
-Got a new job...
And now here we are. I have some pictures of everything that has happened, and I made an attempt at documenting everthing so I could one-day update this page :smt005
I haven't left SLi at all actually. I've been stalking everyone  and shopping for parts (always).
