View Full Version : Headgaskets crumbling externally? Should I be concerned?

So, the new JDM EJ20H I recently picked up had his nasty crumbling going on with the headgasket where it sticks out past the block. Is this a sign that they're about to go? Or is it just characteristic of this type of HG?

I'm somewhat on a budget with this build, and the engine did compression test fine, but I'm a little concerned. The motor shouldn't have more than 70K on it or so.

Thanks!

How old is this engine? Actual age.
The crumbling gasket might just be because of elemental conditions. But I would be concerned that its coming apart between the head and block.

It's out of a later model BG5, since it has shim over bucket valves. So 14-15 years? And its only on the top that its doing this; the sides are fine.

If motor is out I would just do it. Oh and your secret motor project is now told!

Yep, I'd just do it. I also stumbled across some nice HG's from Smart Service in WA:

i would definatly consider the head gaskets huffer linked to. i used these six-star gaskets myself when i did my head gaskets a few months ago. i did alot of reading on this topic and everyone had rave reviews about them and my mechanic here in Portland says they are the only brand he uses because of the quality.

Those look great, but they don't have them for the 20H/20G. Ill probably get some OEM gaskets and be done. Thanks for the advice everyone!

the usdm parts system actually carries ej20g/ej20h specific headgaskets. The part number is:
head gasket: 11044AA355 (that's for 1)
I got that from Marnix's thread and my friend Kimokalihi has used it.

Sweet, got those ordered, as well as a full gasket set (for a 25D). The heads are already off, just have to clean the surfaces. The bores look awesome, as do the pistons. I'm excited.
