so if you couldn't tell I'm inquiring about a EJ22t converted to superchaged. I have been thinking about getting an STi EJ257 someday and converting that to supercharged as I hate turbos, and want to get my feet wet on this idea with a much much cheaper engine for when something goes terribly wrong. the idea is the low compression strong turbo engine will take very little to convert to supercharged and I will be able to run a little more boost than if I were to supercharge a NA engine. I want to use a screw type unit for sound reasons alone but I have only seen one subaru like that and it looks like a lot of fab work, so turbine or vortech style will probably be the way I go. this would be my first venture into the black art of boost so if anyone has ideas on design, supercharger recommendations, ecu recommendations, things like that to get me started and keep me interested in this idea.

Your mentality is a bit skewed..

Cheap easily replaceable engine that can handle boost.. err I cant think of any..

EJ20H/K/G built for boost.. easily found.. pretty cheap depending on region.
EJ22T are built for boost but they have pros / cons .
EJ25D easily found.. if internals are enhanced this is a built proof motor.
EJ22E easily found. very reliable but again just like the D it needs to be built.
EJ251/2/3 easily found.. a mix between the E and the D interms of reliability
EJ255/7 built for boost... easily found.. not so cheap.

Regardless of the setup and motor nothing is going to last if not upgraded or configured properly.

Superchargers blow on their own... for the amount of work, fab, parts.. you could of achieved a twin turbo lag-less custom motor swap ...

A few members used a Mercedes type blower but like you mentioned.. super fabrication involved to fit all the brackets/pipes,

But your best bet is to build your ideas of of Raptor or bite the bullet and buy their kit.

that raptor kit is interesting, but expensive. I was looking to adapt a cheap ej22t setup to supercharged as its a cheap engine and it would be stock internals that are already setup for boost, I'm not going for practicality or crazy hp #'s or anything, think stock ej22t #'s just with a supercharger not a turbo. a cheap programmable piggyback perhaps adapt the power steering or ac compressor bracket to hold a small supercharger, ghetto backyard stuff, not a 600+ hp kit from spiderland.

If you're going to use the long block your going to have to convert to ODBI if you use just the block then fine this make sense since you can retain your heads and intake manifold w/ sensors.

Honestly.. i am not into to slapped together projects with pathetic HP output goals..... why bother... ..

if you choose the above don't forget about items like a turbo cross-member to clear your turbo manifold..

Building a custom kit in the long run will cost close to what the legit version go for but hey don't listen to me...

What the hell do I know about superchargers.... Parasites!!

A 25d is already the same power as a stock 22t...

Come grab one of the 25d's I'm about to scrap and slowly collect parts to build the bottom end.

There is also no cheap/decent way to manage it, even a subpar piggy back is gonna run $300-500.

Idk if you can run a turbo vehicles ECU and just have the boost come from a SC instead of turbo? It that's possible, maybe get a Wrx harness/ ECU and have it merged...that's gonna be $500+ too tho...

Why do you hate turbos?

screw the raptor kit, i just found out that bullet cars has made a Rotrex based kit!!!! still $4000+ but I'm just happy to see a company making a kit with a Rotrex for a Subaru, its the only centrifugal blower that i think is actually worth putting on a car.

I'd still rather home brew a kit with a cheap roots blower though. Even a home brew with a Rotrex would cost over $2K

YES! home brew! thats what I want, I could spent 2-2.5k on parts no problem. custom piping and brackets are easy for me to get done so all I need is the parts. what ideas do you have?

yes I would love an engine to start a build:) when should I come get it?
and as far as turbos go, lag is so uninvited to my driving pleasure and ALL turbos have lag. turbo charging is best explained as "a crude way of making brute hp" that is a Tiff Needell quote. the fact that a stock WRX has about a grands worth of usable rpm at the very end of each gear and then you have to shift is utterly ridiculous and how anyone could call that fun is beyond me. and thats stock, when you put big turbos on cars they are completely useless for anything other than seriously illegal driving, I drive in cities with other people and dont need to be driving like that. I like shifting at 2200rpm and still pull through all 5 gear going up hill, I like driving up messaba in 4th at 1200rpm, accelerating in 5th at 1200rpm, or 5th west a virtual 2in1 in my buddies 89' toyota just letting the clutch out and having 1st gear in high range pull us up with NO gas applied. its fun of a different kind amazing power you can feel without causing a scene like a stupid kid. I guess I'm getting old or something.

I guess what I really want is a V-8 in my outback that sounds like a boxer 4.

After reading the previous post, that's what I was thinking too.

Maybe you should consider the 3.6L H6 engine? At least that's WRX territory without boost.

Not that easy to find parts though...
