not happening, to get that high you need a lift.

That'd be so scary to work under. I've heard of more than a few stories of people using home made jacks and such to get a car that high and the car came down on the floor (luckily with them not under it).

Are you doing some engine/trans work or something? I know tire shops have those lifts that get the car up about 2 feet to take off wheels/tires, but they don't seem to leave alot of room under the car itself.

Not sure on the jack or stands, I don't think anything I have will get that height. Possibly something designed for big trucks or RVs, but I bet you're gonna spend a bit to get them.

For the air compressor, HP is secondary. What you really want to look at primarily, is CFM (cubic feet/minute). Check all your air tools (and ones you expect to pick up) and see what their requirements are. Then, find a compressor that'll deliver AT LEAST that much. A little extra from the compressor wouldn't hurt any. Likely, unless you're gonna have a few tools running at the same time for extended periods, 60 gallon will be plenty. I'd recommend a upright model, as they take less floor space, and drain the water out of the tanks a little better than horizontal tank units.

I managed to take out a tranny with normal shop equipment.

We backed the car onto ramps (about a foot high)
Jacked up the front (note that jack is a 3 ton jack and is much bigger than normal jacks)
Plus we used a set of 3 ton stands and 2 ton stands as backup. Is day those are 2 feet at most

The trans dropped out alright, but getting it out from under the car required someone beside the car pulling and lifting it up/

Dude you just need some SOLID concrete blocks to make like a JENGA stack at each lift piont thats how we do it in Kentucky

a buddy of mine has jack stands that sit VERY high i think theyre called mega stands or somethin catchy like that lol
then to get the car up there hes got a semi jack (family drives trucks) hes had his mustang up on those before and it was fine. hes almost 300 lbs and he was standing in his engine compartment slammin around on somethin and it stayed put pretty well ( i will state that this move was not the brightest one hes ever had)
if your stripping a car i would put the car on regular jack stands and pull stuff out. i did that on my parts car and for my drivetrain swap and it worked fine.

I've used 4 of these http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=38847 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=38847) to do many Subaru tranny swaps. Jacking is usually a multi-stage procedure, and once I get it to height, I then lift each corner and straighten that stand.
It also helps to remove one of the front wheels and pull the trans out through the wheel well.
