So you clicked on this thread...
3 things may of happened:
1) Dubstep!! I love that shit! *click*
2) Curiously you think what the fu*k is Dubstep? .... pause..... ponder... *click*
3) I am bored... oh look new post on SLi ...... sigh... *click*
So now you're here... what now?
Honestly.. 85% of the Dubstep (Electronic wobble genre) is just noise/garbage/annoying/stupid/musically questionable
But for that little bit of gold that makes up the last 15% of Dubstep its actually pretty good... Its been 5 years now and I have watched the genre grow up and turn into this questionable mainstream fade that hipsters seem to be flocking to.
So to try to restore some faith in a really strange genre that consists of "wobble" "whomp" "wub" and any electrocution style noises here is some personal selected and mixed by yours truly :smt020
Take it with a grain of salt
15 mintues (deep dubstep.. standard quality.. seems pretty popular from my youtube statistics)

19 minutes (720p HD audio .. something different)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7utPMMjDZ6M
27 minute mix (720p HD audio with visuals / New)

Put that Scheiße in there, boi! If you're being serious, the 04 cartridge will swap into your 05 strut body.

nice mixes man.. what you using for a setup?
chuckthefuk
10-21-2011, 01:51 PM
Honestly...
core2duo 2.0 / 4gb / on-board audio card
Virtual DJ
Mixed-In-key (harmonic mixing guide)
Windows 7 search
Wireless Mouse..
Basicly its a pathetic setup..
1) I use www.clublandlv.com (http://www.clublandlv.com) to get all my 320kbps tunes..
2) I analyse the tunes with Mixed in key..
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/MixedinKey_Camelot-2.jpg
3) Virtual DJ configured to output high quality and latency settings.
4) Basic 140bmp locking with BOBI (bass out / bass in)
5) Record via Virtual DJ...
6) Adobe After Effects render
7) Youtube upload.
But besides that..
I do have / use:
2 x Tech 12's
1x Serato Scratch Live
1x Numark DXM-600
I have Traktor but I am not a fan of it..
Serato interface is a bit more friendly for me but I am still working my way up to avoid having to rely on visual waveforms and not sound (counting bars)
I am working on it.. I have yet to find anyone who spins dubstep like me.. its almost a mixture of selective drops and mashups.. Some tunes take 2 mins to start before the drop hits.
Anyways :-D Yay dub wub wub wub..

Nice man! I actually run traktor scratch myself with techs and pioneer mixer.
So how are you dropping your tracks in.. wait for build up.. then drop next track on the drop, or what? sounds good tho.. checking out your mixes now. Very good sounding. Are you beat-maching yourself, or auto-match? Very cool tho.. enjoying it! I remember when DNB was the bomb, then dubstep took over.. so to me, dubstep is hipster either way! haha. I like some of it tho. You got some good selections!

Thank you.
Virtual DJ analysis my tunes and tells me what BPM they are.. Most dubstep is 140.. sometimes its 132 / 144 so in that case I just adjust on the fly.. I do use "sync" button to adjust the BPM instead of using the slider.
When I cue the tune I've had enough practice that I can see the cue spot in the wave form and click play in time.. Sometimes i have to nudge it forward / back if I got sloppy
From what I've learned.. there is some math to be had with these tunes..
Drops happen @ 0:30 / 0:55 / 1:10 / 1:20 (most common is 0:55)
Same goes with the outro of a tune..
Dubstep is usually a double up of the tune. 3 minutes of music usually means 1:15 of the tune.. then breakdown and build up and a repeat of the beginning section.
So if i play Tune A and want to start Tune B I wait till the last 0:55 seconds and hit play with Tune B bass set to 0.
Once the drop is about to hit i bring in the bass for Tune B and the mix is done.
The above is an example of a tune "falling off" one ends at the exact moment the other drops.. This works most of the time but my buddies criticize me for doing these types of mixes.
Other times I'll drop the Tune B so when Tune A is about to drop for the 2nd time Tune A will drop at the same moment.
Kind of a switch back and forth.. 2 or 4 bars.. swap bass.. same again...
...
I am really weird when it comes to mixing.. I write all my stuff down in this format..
4A - Tune A - Name (Original Mix) 0:55 no bass
5A - Tune B - Name (Refix) 1:20 full bass (volume raise from 0)
It takes me hours sometimes to come up with a perfect transition or for the right tune to work..
I use to organize all my tunes in some sort of manner but since Windows 7 simple index search happened I just have a massive folder with all my tunes and i simply type in the key I want to use ( 5A ) and all my 5A tunes will pop up..
:smt021 it sucks since I cant beat match or count bars... but I am working on it...

Beat matching takes a long while to get right man.. i know, ive been at it for about 10 years now, and without constant practice, I'm even off sometimes. Sounds like you got a method to the madness tho! Keep the mixes up! Since I spin with decks.. I cant auto sync. although, the new traktor 2 supposedly has an auto sync feature. Would make like a hell of a lot easier i suppose! Its sad though, because ive put years into being able to hear beats going off and such, and now its just so easy for everyone to mix. Makes me look like an ass when I screw up! gonna check out that site you hooked up, free 320kbps is always dope! Thanks man!

If you want my tunes (individually) just use the clublandlv search.. its so good!!!
If you want the 320 of the set just PM me since I am worried youtube will cancel my account .. I constantly get flagged for copyright but it seems that the policies in place just dump ad's on my video / page.
Many of my friends are true DJ's... Trance/Techno/Electro/Fidget House/DNB and all of them cant understand why I spin the way I do..
It all comes down to Visual.. I am a hands on learner who needs Visual elements to understand something...
Thats why I love using FSM when helping ppl on SLi... sure I got a good memory but pictures help :-D
I really appreciate your input .. I've spun a few large parties and at a few festivals all with the techniques I listed above and I never have a problem with the crowed..
I honestly just like dubstep so much i want to spin it... Breakbeat is my true electronic passion but I enjoy pro sets rather then my attempts are it.
Cheers and have a great weekend.

very cool. I spin / use to spin DNB, breaks, electro house, house.. etc. All very fun to spin.
I'm gonna get some dubstep tracks tonight off this site and try throwing some down. definitely like some of the tunes on here. Any artists you would suggest looking into specifically? Thanks again! Enjoy the weekend!

I'm listening now. pretty great, thanks man! I wish i had more time to get into more things, but with my job and all my subie projects and other stuff I do, i dont have any time to start new hobbies. I did some remixing in high school but never went any further, just didnt have time or money for the right equipment. in my city there is a club that has dubstep tuesdays and its nice, no weirdos, no tweakers, no gang ppl, just people my age chilling and dancing and having fun. so ya like i said i wish i had more time for it

I hear that...
Before dubstep there had been so many stereotypes associated with every genre... jungalists.. breakers.. tweakers.. all sorts..
But because dubstep can be applied to almost any type of genre / theme it appeals to everyone not just one specific grouping of people.
Most dubstep parties I go to are as you described them.. "just people chilling, dancing and having fun"
But keep in mind the way I am doing my mixes for youtube is just a Laptop.... with software.....
The higher quality and smoother my mixing all depends on the "equipment" I use...
But you don't need any of that if you just want to play around and enjoy..

I love the 15 and 19 minute mixes you did, but for whatever reason, I can't get into the longer one. Good job...this is much better than the noise some other people are putting out.
