View Full Version : Rear brake job, calipers and rotors

So I need new rear calipers and rotors. I already have rear disks obviously and I have already done pads, SS lines and fluid are there any other upgrades I could do between just replacing the stock stuff and like a full 4pot 2pot conversion.

See my H6 brake posts... 2 piston calipers are not worth it unless you are planning 500hp...
Cliff notes: buy 2004 Legacy GT loaded calipers, and matching rotors. Bolt on, bleed, drive.

Has the H6 stuff been show/proven to have a noticable difference or shorten stopping distanses? Cuz I dout that heat is a problem on the rears and if not I'm just adding exsess weight with the larger rotors.

^ the whole H6 term is over used, they came on other models as well, not just H6's, (might actually be all BE/BHs but i cannot confirm)
Loaded means the it comes with everything (caliper, bracket, clips, hardware) as well as new pads.
Semi loaded includes the caliper, the bracket, and other clips, but has no pads
unloaded is just the caliper and clips.
stopping distance in general has everything to do with your pads and your tires and ABS system. increasing size is typically done to increase heat capacity or increase the braking torque that can be applied.

The stock rears are pretty small but so are the fronts too I guess.

An increase in rear brake torque just adjusts the brake bias to the rear. since the rear does 30% or less of the total braking. I'm going to say no. Like I said before the right pads and tires will improve braking much more...

Well I have good pads and I'm going to get Pilot Super Sports in the summer.
I also see every one upgrading there rotors but every time I look in to it it just seems like a waste.

I'm a big fan of cheap blank rotors on my track car and street cars...Yeah thats what I got for the front when I did them so il probably just get them on the back. All real sports cars have drilled rotors but $100 a piece vs $30 is a lot of money for what ever you get from them. I want new calipers so I can paint them
Oh and one rear is seized up and the other moves but doesn't work. I lube them up every time I do brakes and they worked fine so I think there toast now.

I run cheap blanks on the front rotors, and on the back I currently have a set of drilled rotors I got for a ridiculously good price. I run the same brake setup that the 04 Legacy GT runs, that car puts out the same power as mine, but uses a bigger brake system as it's a heavier vehicle overall.
You could just replace both rear calipers (Subaru recommends replacing them in pairs), your pads and rotors and be done with it.

Huffer please stop compairing brakes with power. The two are not directly related. Heck most high horse power drag cars upgrade to smaller than stock brakes...
Brake size should be directly related to how the brakes are going to be used.

Sure they are. Is there another reason why the 2011 wrx runs 11" front rotors and 10.5" rears, with the same 2pot/1pot brake system, with the weight staying around the 3300lb mark, while the power output has grown since the 2004 wrx?
High power drag vehicles also use a parachute for braking, large brakes would be stupid on a vehicle designed to accelerate extremely fast and then slow to a cruising speed after a few seconds. Come at me with a different argument.

Actually the 08-10 wrx's are lighter than the 04's and the 2011's or when ever they widened the track and put 235's on them are just a little more. Its the STi that went from 3250 to 3400lbs or more for some reason but I have seen a lot of reviews saying the wrx is faster than the sti but the brakes fade.
But I'm with u on the parachute and they only have to stop once even from 250mph its once not constant heat build up.
I think I need a different car something worth getting 2 piece rotors on. STi's have brembos but I want 16inch rotors like the ZR-1!!! but that won't work with my 16inch wheels lmao. But on a more serious note even Honda Accords and Mazda 3's have way bigger brakes than 2nd and 3rd gen leggys but I sapose the 4th gens have bigger brakes.

My wife's 03 Accord puts out 170hp and runs a 10.3" front rotor and rear drums. The same year car in a V6 engine has 4 wheel disc brakes but keeps the same front brake size.
4 Gen Legacies have 11" front rotors and 10" rears (approximately).
It's not just about the brakes and the size of them. It's the pad compound, tires and wheel sizes also. Bigger brake rotors have a better heat dissipation characteristics but that doesn't mean they're better brakes. Braking is all about the application. But if you want to "upgrade" your all around braking performance, you can't really go wrong if you apply parts from a similar, newer vehicle.
Putting Corvette brakes on a Punto isn't a good example. Likewise applying Brembos onto a non-track driven and slower accelerating normally aspirated Legacy isn't necessary. Now if that same Legacy all of a sudden needed to haul down from a top speed or having great "touch" braking capability, you could argue that using Brembos with the big 2 piece rotor and alloy calipers makes sense. But for most of us, it doesn't.

to continue with the above, just because a car has 500hp doesn't mean it need big brakes. reality is that most people that double or triple the horse power of their car have no need to upgrade from a stock set up because they don't use the brakes, most people do not take their cars to track days and almost just as many people know little to nothing about brake compounds. i would bet that any street application where somebody didn't think their brakes were up to snuff could be solved by changing to the right pads, but instead people think they need to "upgrade" to larger everything. This has always been particularly bad in the subaru community where everybody thinks they "need" 4/2pots for DDing...
my integra could go from 130whp to 400whp and there isn't a single change that i would have to make to my brake setup because I have already set it up appropriately for how the brakes are being used.
