View Full Version : Anyone running Wheel Adapters??

I'm on the fence about this.
I have a few sets of wheels, and not 1 of them being 5x100. So, I did what everyone else does (well, some people) and put them up for sale... 2 weeks ago. Now I'm contemplating keeping them and getting wheel adapters.
The wheels in question are O.Z. Canyon's. 18x8 squared with an ET40 and 5x120 (BMW of course) fitment.

I "thought" about getting adapters like these: ( :smt027 Edit )

I have 19mm adapters. From 5x100 to 5x114. Ended up grinding a few mms off my studs to get wheels to fit. Wheels are 16x8 and 16x9 with a final offset of 22.
I can't see them as being a problem in any way. Buddy of mine had 40 and 50mm adapters on his e30. As long as they're hubcentre. I don't understand where the hate for adapters come from. Wheel bearings are a yearly expense anyways lol.
The ride is 100% fine too. The wheel, tire and adapter combo has less vibrations that my stock 14inch steelies.
Go for it.

I.. I don't understand where the hate for adapters come from?....
When people cheap out and buy low quality adapters a few things tend to happen:
- low grade wheel stud snaps in the adapter..
- when torquing down lugs the adapter cracks
- in extreme track conditions lateral g's warp the adapter or worse cracks it.
- lack of hubcentric can cause undesired vibration that leads to failure.
- by adding an adapter / spacer you break the transfer of load.. You have now added another point of failure since the lugs are not fastened to the hub itself but rather the adapter then the hub.
- wheel bearing failure... and Okin if this is for your e36 oh man your going to get reemed at the steeler.
Now... that being said a company like H&R adapters & ARP studs make a very high quality track designed adapters...
If you HAVE to use them.. then do it..

I've had it for a week or so. (MR thread is in the sig)
My E36 doesn't need them with the Mito's, but has Eibach staggered spacers with extended bolts when I run the Canyons. I have 3 sets of wheels for the E36. Figured, I'd share them between the 2
I would definitely research some more about studded adapters, but just wanted to see what various widths/manufacturers etc... some members might have used successfully.

My bro is running it on his gc8 to fit the 5x114.3 sti wheels. Been his daily for a year now with no problem. Make sure to get a hubcentric spacer or ring to center it. Torque it and double check the torque after you take it for a short drive. Then check it again maybe a week later to make sure the torque is still right. Btw his using a 25mm spacer

Thanks! Is there anyway you can get the manufacturers name from him???
As far as hub-centric rings goes, I have no intentions on skimming out on them. I believe that they'll be a must unless made specifically for a Subaru. My Eibach spacers are model specific, and don't require them as they are built into them.

As far as the spacer goes if it isn't over torqued and is evenly torqued to spec it should be fine. The lugs may not be high quality and its possible they could fail over time.

Well, I'm no longer considering the one's in the original post. Definitely looking around.
I checked the wheel calculator, and couldn't figure out if I entered the offset right.. So, I'm not sure if Ill run these yet.

It's actually the cheapest one that popped out of ebay lol  it was 5x100 to 5x114.3 25mm adapter.

He is using two hubcentric rings on each side. One for the spacer to the hub and the other wheel to the spacer. Your gonna need a digital caliper vernier gauge (micrometer) to figure out which rings you need

I'd stick with a quality manufacturer that uses ISO standards. H&R, Eibach come to mind. Last thing you want is to hit a pothole, crack an adaptor or lug and potentially damage your wheel, wheelhub and anything bolted to the hub.
My rule of thumb is that if your wheels cost $1000, then you better budget at least 15% into anything that supports it.

I know what you mean Huff. I don't want to skimp out "if" I go this route, but I don't want to go for a ride buying a set.
Just got another set of wheels... Et is in the low 30's and they're 16x7.5. Can't get the bolt pattern off them, and it was late when I picked them up. If they fit, I'll be getting some M+S for tires, if they don't fit... maybe a more common adapter. We'll see......
