This just popped into my head, been wondering a while. My old Leggy was a 1996 Subaru Legacy L, 5 speed, AWD, 2.2L, No EGR.
Production stamp is Fall (October or November 1995)

Is this car an OBD1 or an OBD2 car?

Much Thanks! And Happy Halloween!

Thats odd.
Mine is a 95 L , Auto with AWD. I have an EGR and I am OBD2.

5 speeds dont have EGR. On the 2nd gens. Autos are EGR.

If it was made in 95 Subaru did use OBD2

...except on the few federalized 95's that came factory OBD-I.

OP, the two I've seen were production dated in 1994, and MY 95

I was 90% sure it was an OBD2 car, I just wanted to make sure. Thank you! What years were the Legacy OBD1? Just the first generation? And some federalized 95s like Mike-Tracy said?

Check under the dash. The OBD2 connector is different to OBD1.
You can't go based on production date, it's too general. You can also call Subaru and give them your VIN#.

My 95 was Produced August of '94 and its OBDII. It was about the earliest they were made. I honestly didn't think there were any 2nd gen Leggys that were OBDI.

Mike, what do you mean by "federalized"??

all MY96 cars are required to have OBD2. Lots of the MY95 cars had it too though. Early MY95 Imprezas didnt have it, but later MY95 ones did. From what I can discern, ALL MY95 Legacy's were OBD2, since it was the first year of that body in the USA it stands to reason they just made them all OBD2

Federalized - non california spec models. 100% of California 2nd gens were OBD-IIl.

Eli - I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen them with my own eyes, but they were both 5mt LHD BD's, sticker under hood said OBD-I. Had the spot for the OBD-II plug under the dash, but nothing hooked up, and the wiring under the dash was very different as well.

Very strange, where did you see them?

I heard all usdm 2nd gen legacies are obd-2, wouldn't have made much sense to do one year of obd-1 in a new generation to then have to change the electronics for the next year, so they did obd-2 a year earlier then required.

The jdm 2nd gens are a different story.

EJ22 in 1995 and 1996 only I believe.

I thought the Phase 1 EJ22's came with OBD1, and the Phase 2's were equipped with OBD2 in 96. Can someone clarify?

Phase II EJ22 didn't come until 1999. It has nothing to do with OBDII at all. I'd really like to see an OBDI BD/BG/BK, because I'm not convinced that Subaru would've put OBDI stuff in cars at a later production date than my car was (which was one of the earliest 2nd gens that made it to the lot). That just doesn't make much sense.

I thought it was in 1997 when Subaru made changes to the 2.2 to make it the Phase 2. They made the engine more efficient.

I think that was technically version 3 of Phase I of the EJ22. It's really confusing, but the 99 change was much more radical.

What I have seen...

My cars....
98 Auto BD GT-has EGR and is OBDII
97 Auto BK-has EGR and OBDII
97 5 speed BG-has EGR and is OBDII
97 auto BD L-has EGR and OBDII

Others...
I was told, my 96 BK parts car was a OBDI with an OBDII port, however I can not confirm this since I got the car with no motor, trans, hood.

Old parts car at old job... We had a 95 Outback that was OBDI. Dont remember if it was a BK or BG, but it WAS OBDI! We had two parts cars at the time and the 96 BG had a 2.2 and was OBDII, originally had a 2.5 but was converted... I saw these back in about 2008 at my old job... Cant remember about EGR's on these...

Weird!! And it should be BK, the only Outbacks in 1995 were flat roof wagons like Wiscon_Mark's car.

Everything 96+ was OBD2, thats a fact, no question there. lots of 95 legacys were OBD2 compatible, but some probably werent. and i'd say half if not more than half of the 95 Imprezas were not OBD2
