I know this has been done before but I just wanted to post my personal experiance.

I followed this how to on nasioc:

One thing I will say about this how to is that it is not nessicary to remove the steering wheel if you are just installing the switch. Just cut out the plug, remove airbag, install switch, plug in (clock spring is already wired for cruise), and your good to go!

I then found someone on subaruoutback.org who was parting out a 96. The how to said you had to use model year specific computers, so I was able to get him to sell me all the cruise parts, minus the clutch switch, because it was an auto. He also included the wiring harness plug for the cruise computer. All the wiring is already there, so I simply just plugged the computer in, but I did notice the wiring was different on my car than what he had provided. So the difference in AT and MT is in the wiring, not the computer.

Bought the clutch switch from my local Subaru dealer, and everything was plug and play.
