what year engines will work in an 05 Baja/legacy?

Reading the sticky, and I'm not 100%. If using the 05 heads/intake, would say a 96 2.2 block bolt up? looking at a non turbo baja that needs an engine, would be looking to get it running on the cheap for the time being.

I Have seen some interchanges showing the 99-up sohc 2.5 will work, and I know the mt is non egr and the at has it.
I have read that all ej's will bolt into one another, that's why I am curious if the earlier block will work under the 05 heads.

If you own a 05 Baja, DONT down grade the motor! If you go and do that, your rig is worth a ton less. It's not worth it. Leave it stock.

Shop around, I'm sure you can find a motor for a decent price. Also some times the interchange may not work because of one little thing that can be changed. I know they say a 96 2.5 will not swap with a 97, but they do, however it's the heads that are different.

My advice is dont ever bother getting a motor unless you at least get one from the same generation. Even a mid-late 90's 2.2 is minimum $600 for an older, less power, will need to be converted to fit motor thats not for your car. With the time you will spend trying to make it fit, you wont save any time or money.

Now if your trying to do some crazy hybrid swap or something, ok have fun and knock yourself out! Just sounds like your trying to save some pennys...

Yeah the stocker has a pretty bad knock. The plan is to get it at least usable as a parts runner for the shop, and rebuild the stocker with good parts and hit it with some boost down the road when it goes back together.

Well I have the new project home :) I may be able to pick up a freebie '11 STI shortblock that I will use. Oh and as far as making this Baja worth less money, Lets just say I picked it up for the price of a set of new wheels/tires :)

automatic yes. manual no. in 99 they went to an 8 bolt bellhousing, on the manual, one of the bolt holes is used for the starter. the autos dont use it. but i HIGHLY DISCOURAGE USING A '4 BOLT' bottom end
the pre 99 used a shitty bottom end and break cranks, and rods all the time. then they revised it in 99 and improved the design greatly.
pay the extra ang get an 8 bolt. ESPECIALLY if your putting boost to it.

Thanks for the info! The reason I had asked is I have a 40k mile 96 ej22 and was thinking of using the shortblock. I am waiting to hear back from a friend that's a subie tech, I may be able t get a freebie '11 STI shortblock that has a cracked ring. The EJ22 would be a temp solution to get it up and running before rebuilding the original shortblock, or getting an upgraded one.

if you put a EJ22 in there it will be detrimental to you compression ratio.. drop it to like...8.0:1. which isnt very fun for drivablity, loosing all the low end power.. boring. if your gonna go boosted, you can make up for that drop in compression with boost, but the stock ECU wont support bigger injectors with out a tune so you will be limited to about 6lbs of boost which will only make about 180CHP. if you use a STi short block, you will have the same issue. and there is no real way to tune the factory ECM, which means you will need a piggyback. just saying...
