This is my writeup for installing an Infiniti I30 auto dimming mirror in the 95-99 legacy outback models. There is no drilling needed. Running wiring is the hardest part. This total install took me an hour. Here is my generic writeup.
Heres whats needed:
96-99 Infiniti I30 auto dimming mirror
Both harness connectors from the new mirror and infiniti body harness
Wire to connect power and ground
Small pocket screwdriver to remove mirror base cover
Misc wire connectors for whatever else
Phillips screwdriver to remove and install mirror screws
Start by popping the cap off the stock mirror that screws to the roof. After you remove the mirror it will look like this

If you look at the new Infiniti mirror with the bracket cover removed the hold down bolt pattern is the same.
Here it is installed with the wiring being prepped.

The oem infiniti connector is a 4 wire connector. 2 wires are power and ground and the other 2 are for backlighting on the day and auto buttons on the mirror.

Black is ground
Grn/blu is switched power. I tapped into the illumination fuse so the mirror wont have power unless the headlights are on. Tucking the wiring up under the headliner and running it down to the fusebox will be necessary.
The last 2 wires are unused. I didnt use them for simplicity sake. The mirror works great without hooking them to anything.
Here is my new Oem Nissan auto dimming mirror installed without mounting anything to your windshield.
