View Full Version : Factory accessories that are and AREN'T pre-wired.

Ok so I was replying to the 95-99 legacy wagon tweeter thread and it got me thinking about how there are lots of misconceptions floating around out there about what options are and are not pre-wired from the factory to ease installation.
From my own personal experience with a 1999 Legacy Sedan L 30th Anniversary, these are the items that I can say my car did not come pre-wired for:
- Front fog lights: even though there is a plug for the switch in the dash there is no plugs in the front to actually plug them in... or at least nobody has found them yet. I have traced the wiring harness from the bumper beam all the way back to the fuse box and found no plugs of any type tucked or taped anywhere.
- Illuminated interior vanity mirrors
- Heated seats
- Heated mirrors
- Heated windshield
- The inside lower corner door reflectors if they have lights in them... I dont know if they illuminate or not.
- I am not 100% sure but I am pretty sure that my rear sedan doors are not pre-wired for speakers.
- Factory Subwoofer, I think this technically counts as not pre-wired because if you buy the Subwoofer add-on option, it doesnt come with the harness that connects it to the factory stereo wiring harness which is not pre-wired into every car... Correct me if I am wrong.
Items that are pre-wired:
- Keyless entry if you have power locks (97-99)
- The factory alarm option (97-99)
- Front door tweeters
- Rear 3rd brake light if you have no spoiler
Anybody else have personal experience with other factory options or accessories?

Is keyless prewired? I have a 95 with power locks. No idea what the plug looks like but I do have a few extra plugs under the column. Anyone car to help me out? If I do have it, What unit (pic and/or part number) do I need.
I did do a quick search but I am kinda at work so I don't have much time to ever get far.

There are quite a few threads on this...
This is most likely everything you need though:

According to that link. 95-96 isn't prewired. Wiring needs to be run into the driver door and an actuator installed.

Good call... OP changed to reflect that 95-96 factory alarms are not prewired

Keep in mind, USDM MY99 and MY04 cars are a bit of a hodge podge of items, because of the year end and year beginning transition with 2nd to 3rd gen transitions and 3rd to 4th gen.
But a good start nonetheless!

I believe the vanity visor wiring is there, did you pull off the visor and poke around up in the roof? you could get them on any 95-99 model, so im thinking it would be there. but i suppose i wouldnt be surprised if it wasnt
Also, part numbers for the Wagon D-pillar tweeters:

Also I should mention my 98 L wagon has:
- keyless entry
- cruise control
- front door tweeters (i added them, wiring was there)
it does NOT have:
- wiring for fog lights. there isnt even a plug in the dash for the switch.
- wiring for heated mirrors (either in the door or at the plug for the mirrors)
- wiring for heated seats (either in the center console or under the seats)
Things i want to check for:
- wiring for powered vanity mirrors

I couldn't find any wiring up around the visors or under the front edge of the headliner in my 97 Outback. Maybe it is up there somewhere, I was hoping it was, but I didn't see it...

the keyless kits plug in and use vampire clips to tap into a few wires. that is how they are installed by the dealer. there should be a few plugs for them, all 97-99 legacy models that have the "lock/unlock all" buttons should be pre-wired to accept keyless entry. maybe the brightons dont have electric locks? but the outbacks should. its just a matter of adding the kit

Tachometer is prewired (if you have a brighton without).

Heated windshield? How does that work?
harrymaneuvers
03-02-2012, 02:33 PM
On the models with cold weather package... the seats, mirrors and windshield are heated. It is not the entire windshield... just the bottom of it where the wiper blades sit when turned off.

Factory alarm and keyless were NOT pre-wired in my 97 Legacy L Wagon with power locks...

I'm curious about cruise control in a 99 legacy brighton. Mine did not come with it and I was told that in 99, if it didn't come as an option, then it can't be installed after the fact.
I would like a second opinion. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Well this is a diagram of the system:
http://www.dealerdirectparts.com/v/vspfiles/photos/7521110.gif
Besides that, pull your gauge cluster surround and see if you have a plug connector where the cruise control switch should be.
If you do, then I would say it is a pretty good chance that it is pre-wired and you would just have to install the actuator, switch, steering wheel control lever and cruise control cable.

according this: http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_ar ... on%20specs (http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive98_99.html#1999%20%20L,%20brighton%20specs)
it was not a separate option for the brighton, apparently because in 99 they had a package that included cruise plus other things the brighton didnt have.
for 99 the brighton is considerably different than all other models of Legacy, so its conceivable that since they stripped a lot off that model, they also removed the cruise wiring from the car.
you could check by looking near the strut tower on the passenger side (in the engine bay) for a harness plug that is taped off, for the cruise unit.
or look in your dash for the plug, behind where the switch would go.
or look under the dash by the brake/clutch pedal for taped off plugs that you would swap out when installing cruise

My 97 outback is prewired for heated seats and heated mirrors.
I think the GT's are the only one that comes with the corner illumination on the door cards and vanity mirrors.
I've also seen the SUS have the winter package at pick n pull (heated seats/windshield/mirrors)

I noticed there were two plugs in the rear doors of my 95 sedan I know one is for the window regulator but the other one is a mystery to me..it doesn't have power locks and the window window switch is directly to the trim panel..could that be the wiring for the rear speakers?

I took the trim panels off again to do the cutouts for the speaker grilles, but I got a better look at the l wagons wiring and its a little difference
I would have to take the bulkhead harness or just strip it right there and get the speaker harness and connector from the bulkhead on the body.
I'm probably just going to get a small amp and a small sub and call it good, just get it wired up at tie same time as the rear doors.

Maybe it's for UR locking mechanism when u lock UR car. Unless that runs on a whole diff thing I'm not too sure. I don't remember seeing any extra wires when I did my rear speakers in my 95 bk

RE: vanity visors.
I got some vanity visors from an OB for my 95 legacy. i cut the wires at salvage, straight swap (of coarse), but I poked around with my fingers and looked as best I could (without pulling the headliner down) and my 95 "L" doesn't have any wiring up there for the visor lights.
RE: maplights:
My legacy didn't have map lights, BUT the mounting captive threads ARE there. I pulled a maplight from a 1st gen outback (the one that says "outback" and has the glassed holder pocket), BUT that unit has a different bolt pattern compared to the simple unit. i pulled one from a 1st gen legacy (looks identacal to our 03 OBS map lights) and THAT is the mounting hole pattern that exists in my legacy. I just tapped a hot lead from the overhead dome light to power the map lights and screwed the ground (with a loop wire fitting) to the mounting hole.
I'm in the market for a heated seat upgrade but that wiring is not present. . . .
ON ANOTHER NOTE.
I installed an auto dimming compass mirror into our 03 OBS, straight plug in, harness is in the headliner!
