Ok so my sedan is going to get scrapped. Rust got the better of it.

I am currently looking at a 96 legacy wagon with a bad trans no rust very clean. (it looks like a gt but not sure yet)

If it is a gt does the 96 have the same rear and center diff as the 97?

If it isn't a gt, is it easier to just remove the rear diff and the trans or is it easier to drop it as a full assembly? (hub assemblys, cv axles, diff, subframe)

96-99 5MT GT's all use 4.11 F/R Final Drives..

All 95-99 legacy's have a 1:1 center diff.. simply put the center diff is no issue when swapping 3.90/4.11/4.44 .

Just match the front and rear and your golden.

You cant exactly remove the drivetrain as one assembly.

I wouldn't bother removing the entire rear end unless your suspension bits are attached and you cant be bothered to remove them.

its not a fun job since you need to take the e-brake cables with the assembly

Example:

The transmission has its own "sub-sub-frame" and does not attach to the front subframe in anyway. If you were to pull the motor + trans then sure you can remove it as one assembly but its not worth it.
