Exhaust leak

Wouldn't you know it? I've been thinking about getting an exhaust for my Outback, and the leak would be a perfect excuse. But no, it's the wife's Outback that gets the exhaust leak......

Haven't had a chance to get under the car yet, but I reached under and it feels like it's at the mid pipe/axle back flange. Not sure if it just needs a new gasket or if I'll have to replace stuff. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to get under and have a look soon....

So get an exhaust for yours and swap your current exhaust onto hers. :twisted: Just don't tell her you're doing it. :lol:

Well, I know where I'm not getting it from if it needs a muffler. I stopped at Advance, and they want $177. I'm sure I can find something better for that price. They didn't seem to think it was worth that price, and even suggested a shop that does custom exhaust work. They said the place does good work, which is something I didn't know existed around here. There are a couple shops closer than this one, but I know they do crappy work. I haven't heard of this place they suggested, so I'll have to check them out.

Hey, I finally got a chance to look at the exhaust the other night. The one bolt on the midpipe/muffler joint broke. Pipes are decent, but bolts/flanges are really rusty. I popped a new bolt in place of the missing one, and it quieted it down pretty good. There was still a slight leak, so some "muffler cement" came into play. I let the car sit overnight for the stuff to cure. Wife took the car today to get it inspected, and they passed it. They mentioned that the flange on the rear of the convertor is really rusty, too. They said there weren't any leaks, so it passes, but they feel that flange will let go before long. I had noticed the flange the other night, but since the car was quiet I figured I'd see if it'd get through inspection.

Since we had recently bought it, the inspection and registration didn't match, inspecting it today only got us a couple months, to match the registration. Since the old expired yesterday, I really didn't have any choice, though. As soon as I'm in the "window" for the inspection again, if it's still quiet, it's heading back to the same shop hoping to be good for a year and I can take my time getting around to replacing everything from basically the manifold back. If it were my car, I'd probably throw on a header, too, but alas, it's the wife's she probably would just complain about that, anyway.
