I am looking to see what kind of interest there is in carbon fiber parts for the BD. I am an industrial design student at MSCD here in Denver and have learned a few things here and there :smt002 and with the recent front end collision I participated in, I have been thinking. I'm going to start replicating parts into CF starting with the trunk lid. Ounce I make the mold its good for about 100 pieces so would anyone be interested in a CF trunk lid? I will be making other things to like fenders, hood, and also a bunch of smaller interior and exterior pieces. If there is enough interest I am going to consider doing other years but for right now everything would be BD specific. Let me know what you think. I should have the first trunk done by christmas and I can upload pics so you can see my work.

If you do this you will be the first of about 20 threads to actually do something. I would be interested in a hatch(wingless), interior trim and stuff like that. Put up a list and some round about prices. OH btw if you want to sell anything you will have to set up a vendor account.

Really? Im actually surprised no one has done this yet. Its gonna be about three weeks before the trunk is done because I have to wait until school is completely over so I can make the mold in the lab there. Yea I think After the trunk I will do Interior trim and maybe timing belt covers. After that I will move on to more complicated parts like the fenders and maybe the hood. I will get some prices in about a week

Yeah i would be interesred as well. Someone had a group buy for hoods one time and it was a disaster i believe. They were for the BE though. It might be easier start with smaller parts that are easier to ship. You might get a few more customers as well that way. But definitely cool whatever you do!!

Can I get a discount? :smt002

Seriously, wish you luck and stay persistent. Like Red said, a disaster occurred not too long ago with a shoddy vendor and quite a few good people got screwed. Your best bet is to go through proper channels here, and get a couple parts completed before you announce a sale etc... I'd be interested in a CF airbox, radiator shroud and certain body panels.

Something I bet everyone would like here.. carbon fiber trunk tire cover. Or whatever the heck its called. The piece that goes over the spare tire in a sedan BD.

CF fenders would work really well. They should be identical for BD/BG/BK and as a result you'd have more buyers.

BG/BK owners would love a CF hatch - that thing weighs a ton.

Even some CF wing spoilers for BG/BK/BD owners would be slick.

I looked into this before. I was in talks with a company that does some great work. Anyway after discussing prices of either paying for a mold to be made or at least 150 pieces or so made I didn't think it would be cost effective for the car. But If you can make your own mold you are already ahead of the game. I will explore CF parts again in the future, but If you need some help shoot me a pm.

Like huffer said fenders would be really cool. Maybe things like a radiator shroud or even door sills would be cool also. There was a list in some thread that someone was making, maybe reason? Either way i definitely thing if you follow through you'll have some people jump in to buy the things quickly.

Sweet Sounds great guys. The molds are pretty expensive that why I dont think i will be doing the hood unless this really takes off. Ok so i guess im an idiot but when you refer to the rad shroud what specifically are you speaking of?

Just covers the top of the radiator. It's an appearance mod!

Oh alright that's cool. I would definitely be interested in making one of those. If anyone has one and is willing to loan to me for a little so i can make a mold I will send a CF one for the price of the fabric (which is not very much). Also I went to a few junk yards and scouted out some parts including the BG/BH hatch. If this takes off like I hope then the sky is the limit : )

Man, if Randy could get ahold of the JDM trunk for the BD second gen Legacy and mold that it would make him very "vintage"! This is because the center garnish that say, "Legacy" will fit on that trunk and not on the USDM trunk. Shouldn't be too hard to get one from Canada.

I have one on my car, and would be willing to lend it if need be.

BUMP BUMP BUMP I UPDATED THE DIY WITH PICS AND PROGRESS. A new lid is cured and ready for finishing. On the note of the JDM lid that would be awesome and I wish I would have thought of that before I started on this one. Reason I might just have to take you up on that offer some day when the time is right to do another mold. Can someone take pictures of the garnish and why it would not fit the usdm lid. I might be able to modify the current mold to fit the JDM depending on the differences.

Randy, there is more then one difference on the JDM trunk lid as opposed to the USDM trunk lid.
First, there is a third brake light that is located in the center of the trunk above the licence plate.
Second, the reverse lights are shaped slightly different because the shape of the JDM opening for the plates is trapezoidal and not like the USDM larger squarish license plate space.

Typical JDM second gen Legacy trunk lid looks (Legacy garnish in the center) as such. Also, make note as the JDM spoiler not including the brake light in it because the trunk already has it included:
