i have a 95 sub legacy with a 2.2 and the shifter will not move from park with the foot on the brake pedal. you can hear a relay click but notning more happens. i removed the trim around the shifter and bypassed the shifter lock. what should i look for to fix the shifter.

the shifter lock.

Start here, and also check the shifter itself. And I don't think your car has hill lock.

sounds as if something is bent underneath or inside or both. Check the FSM or PM ChucktheFck.

4EAT automatic transmissions use a "brake position sensor" which is located above the brake pedal "follow the pedal up the stem and you will see the button.

The BPS is used when the brake pedal is pushed and this triggers the brake lights as well as the lockout system. This may be why the bypass switch is the only way to make it work at the moment.

Check that your brake lights are working when you push the brake pedal.
If your brake lights don't work swap the sensor.

Start there if thats the case the sensor is around $80.

I have one!!! I bought an OEM one when I was trying to diagnose my ABS light coming on when I reversed.

Brand new in the box and for sale if interested.
