I posted in the transmission forum and got info over there. I'd link you but I'm not at my computer right now. It's a fairly recent post. Use the part number that you find there to search. I got the joint from a parts database at my local dealer. You might be able to find a similar database if you click the parts link on Subarus website, put in your zip code, and choose a dealer close to you. Googling the part number might also give you results, but the method I just described was the cheapest, around $53 shipped.

If you have any trouble, let me know, and I'll give you direct links next time I'm at my computer.

Hahaha you drove it for all of 5 minutes and didn't say something until the next day!

I was being nice... And I did tell your g/f, but she said you knew about it. I figured what was the point of tell you that your cars shifter was more sloppy then a $5 hooker on Hollywood boulevard... LOL
This needs to go down into SLi's funniest post of history LMFAO :smt005

Time for a small update that I'm sure will be controversial. It's something I've been nervous about ever since actually pulling the trigger, because it'll be hard to pull off the right way. But I'm determined. I finally got these in the mail today:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7784219870_cfa3f67d07_z-1.jpg

As you can see, they are blue, and that's not gonna fly. I already sanded them down and started painting them.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7784221054_1b81066867_z-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7784222710_7a80c40f1f_z-1.jpg

Wondering what color that is? It's the same color used on the Mazdaspeed 3.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7784239442_c59932596b_z-1.jpg

So, I've finish painting them, all they need is clear coat. It's a little too humid to clear coat them tonight, so I'll probably do it tomorrow, then I'll post a photo.

I'm really nervous about how it'll look. Im hoping it'll look more cool than ricer. I have black and silver (my car color) if graphite grey doesn't work out.

It's an experiment, we'll see how it turns out.

I know, I use that silver for a lot of things, but I decided to contrast for a change. Like I said, if it doesn't work, I always have that Subaru silver to fall back on, and I know it's a perfect match.

Here are some photos of how drastic the graphite color can vary depending on lighting. You saw the color in day light in my previous pictures, here it is in a dimmer light:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7785115246_ef6f03391c_z-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/7785118468_75bd7c034d_z-1.jpg

It takes a darker appearance in less light, almost to the point of looking black.

amgarrety
08-14-2012, 09:31 PM
They need clear coat yet. I only have one coat on right now, but I'm going to add some glitter into the next coat. Then they'll go on my car.

I have pictures of a test of the blue eyelids on the car, but they look hideous.

04Legacy

Chad dont hate on my eyelids!! I cant complain with free. Mike, once you put on 2-3 coats they should look really good. Give them some flake to set them off.

Flake = Sparkle. :grin:

amgarrety
08-14-2012, 10:13 PM
I won't add anything to the clear coat, because the graphite grey is automotive paint, therefore it already has flakes in it, but I will clear coat the hell out of them to give them a nice shine. I might even sand, re-clear coat, and buff them one last time before putting them on to make them look like glass.

We'll see. My impatience might just get the best of me and I'll put them on tomorrow after a third coat.

any progress on your gauge cluster? i'm wondering how much work will have to go into mine (03 GT wagon)

amgarrety
08-15-2012, 09:07 AM
That project is kind of dead in the water right now because I have the wrong cluster. I have the one with the tiptronic display, and that means the internals are a lot different that mine... Far to different to work around. I have the possibility of getting the correct cluster at some point, but if I can't or I decide to scrap that project all together, I'll sell my current cluster.

I'd love to do it but it needs to be possible in the first place, and with the tiptronic cluster, it doesn't appear to be possible at the moment.

elislider
08-15-2012, 01:02 PM
how do you ID that your cluster is for tiptronic? i picked up one from a manual JDM car, looks a lot like yours... no Auto selector indicator down the middle

amgarrety
08-15-2012, 01:19 PM
By default it shouldn't be tiptronic then if it is from a manual car, because only automatics came with the tiptronic feature (sometimes called sportshift, it lets you manually control when an automatic changes gears). I don't know exactly why I have tiptronic, becuase it has no gear selector display inside to indicate I have an automatic cluster, but it is what it is, so that means you might have the possibility of having tiptronic as well. The only way I was able to tell was when I took my cluster apart and found the screen inside it. You can't really tell from the outside because the actual display is right behind thin plastic that you can see only light through.

If you take it apart, you'll see that behind the door ajar display is a thin layer of red plastic. If there is a thin layer of green attached to it as well, you have tiptronic.

I'm told by Yama that the wiring diagrams i've found don't work for tiptronic, so we're going to explore the difference between the two at some point to see what can be done about it, if anything.

If you have the regular non-tiptronic cluster, there is a wiring diagram on this site that can help you out. I'll link you to it if you need it.

Update on the eyelids as well. They are painted now and just about ready to go on the car. They don't quite fit becuase the company who made my replacement headlights put some stupid weather stripping on that gets in the way. I'm a little afraid to take off the weather stripping in case it is really necessary, but I've got adhesive to re-apply it if I have to.

Here are some pictures where I am just testing the colors out side by side to see how they look together. I think I really like the combination. The eyelids aren't permanently attached to my headlights yet, and thats why there appears to be a fitment issue, but the eyelids do infact fit pretty well. Like I said, I just need to remove that piece of weather stripping.

Mine looks exactly the same from the front aside from the differences you mentioned, but I don't want to postively confirm you have tiptronic. The tiptronic display would show throught the plastic area below your door ajar display.

I bought my cluster from a private seller, but it doesn't have the indicators inside of an automatic cluster.

Guys, there are like 3~5 different types of combination meters over there. What you want to look at is the number on the bottom right above where it says "SUBARU" It should read 15AE090 or 15AE030 or 15AE060, etc, etc... THAT is what determines how your combination meter is wired.

Okay.... after looking through my library, I found that there are around 25 different combination meters.... just for the BE/BH alone!!

It's not organized in a very friendly manner (It's associated by model code). So I have to look up the model and see all the equipment it had and organize it in that manner.

I never noticed this because when I was looking for what I needed, I only looked at the RS30/GT30.

But to answer both of your questions...
Both of your meters are for M/T. The 15AE020 is the predecessor to the 15AE040. I'll do up a more in depth post in a new thread later.

I had those and decided I didn't like them. They just weren't my style.

I think i'm going to repaint these eyelids silver. I like the black, but I'm getting the feeling that other people are, that something is just not fitting about it. I think I need more black trim to make my current color work. I won't repaint for awhile yet, I want to get up to college first before I take them off and repaint them.

Exactly. I'd need to do all that. But I just don't feel like going through that hassle to have the black trim right now. Eventually, I'd like all that though. I have a picture somewhere in this thread (I think around page 5) which shows exactly what I'd like to achieve.

It's an option I've been considering, but I'm putting it off for now for a whole bunch of reasons, from style selection, to fitment, to my #1 concern, ground clearance. That is all stuff I'll work out in due time, but I agree, that would give me another piece of black trim to work into my final goal.

Haha I never use my horn, but I think I'm about to start. The tri-tone sounds so angry, it's great. And the two Hellas alone are 118dB, I wonder what the addition of the third horn does.

I've already blasted a few people much to their surprise, and I must say, I don't think I'll ever get bored of it. It echoes, and you can feel the horn vibrate parts of the interior when my windows are closed. I'm just waiting to get pulled over. Haha

See, I'm beginning to have a love/hate relationship with these things. I love how they look on other cars but I can't get them to work on mine.

I want to know why the eyelids don't incorporate the body line into their design, because if I remember correctly, these eyelids were offered in a Subaru aftermarket parts catalogue. Am I wrong? If not these specific eyelids, I'm fairly certain there is a set out there offered by Subaru in their aftermarket parts catalogue that doesn't incorporate the body line. That's just a ridiculous detail to miss. I mean, the line is there, but it is much softer and more rounded than the fender line.

The color is a hard thing to decide on because I love the contrast but I can't do it without the rest of the trim.

howd you wire the 3rd horn in? Looks interesting

Super easy, especially if you understand the importance and usefulness of the relay, because in theory, you could have as many horns as your car battery can handle.

For my three horn set up, I basically just took one of my stock horns, disconnected it, and cut the quick-connector off, leaving just the stock wire. I didn't touch the other horn, which is key here. I used the wire from the connector I cut off to power the relay, which acts like a switch, telling the relay when to activate and when to be quiet. (Side note, the Hella horns use too much power to run off stock wiring, that is why a relay is used - the horn can get its power from the battery while getting the signal to activate from the stock wiring). So the battery powers those two Hella horns, and only one of my stock horn wires is being used to send the signal for the horns to fire. That leaves the other horn wire untouched. I just kept that horn plugged in, and mounted it so it looked nice with the rest of the setup.

If I really wanted to, instead of cutting off the quick-connector from my old horn to use for my relay, I could've just tapped into the wire, leaving the connector in tact. That would've allowed me to run all four horns. I figured that might be overkill though.

TL;DR version, I didn't wire in a 3rd horn, I left a stock horn untouched, and used the other stock horn to make the Hella horns work.

Anyway, onto that photo. Please disregard the ricer I work with.

So that one missing wire wasn't the only difference in the alternators, huh? Well, I still hope you can use it. It'd be a shame for an alternator in decent condition to go to waste.
We know your brakes are the same, but we didn't check to see if you could've used my old swaybar.

We can always compare next time I'm in the area. I'm sure most things switch over, my assumption with the alternator is that the H-6 puts out so much torque that a wider belt is necessary.

It looks like I can swap pulleys but I don't know for sure yet. I cleaned up the alternator so at least it looks better.

I also need a WRX brake setup. Raised decal aside, I assume the brakes on the H-6 are the same mechanically as WRX brakes? I really liked the way they felt and wouldn't mind grabbing a set if they came up.

They have completely different belt systems and they mount a bit differently. Thats more so what the difference is. The interchange in only for H6 only.

The one on the right strut tower is for the alarm system.

Edit: are you guys talking about the DC Powerengineering alternators?
You don't have to swap the pulley, it works fine as is.
Atleast mine does, you just have to check for tightness a little more often so it don't derail.

DC powerengineering makes alternators for the car specified. I ordered an H6 alternator, so it matched the H6 perfectly. I gave my old alternator to amgarrety as a mild upgrade, but as Dead91Silvia pointed out, they aren't an exact match. So even if amgarrety got my DC powerengineering alternator, he'd have the same problems.

I think thats cool, having your own drift circle in your back yard. Anyway as you all know, my car is far from RWD, so I didn't go to drift. I actually went to take a few photos of my friend who just finished putting an RB25 in his car. It was his first time being invited to go for a spin around the oval, so we got pictures and video to capture most of the day. And even though I had no vehicle in which to drift, I took my car around the track, just to see what would happen. No surprises here.

Seriously, don't expect much.

But I grabbed a few pictures as well. Here are a few of my friend, and some of me as well (a little more stationary).

Poor weather conditions up here in the mountains have forced me to buy JDM HID headlights.

In the search for a leveler switch and connectors now so I can adjust the level of my headlights from in the car. 40% because it is hella useful, 60% for cool factor. These guys in the car club up here are easily impressed.

So I'm supposed to have these lights by October 1st at latest. Chances are they won't go on until they are polished to show-room condition though. I hate foggy headlights.

Which HIDs did you get? The A-C version that looks like the USDM Outback lights that you have, or the D version with the "projector"-style turn signal?

I personally have a pair of A-C versions that are awaiting my installation, I managed to get a pair for $200 shipped to me from Hong Kong. Unfortunately it was missing one of the harness connectors, so I am researching alternatives to that.

amgarrety
09-25-2012, 11:23 AM
I bought the A-C type. It shouldn't be too hard making up for that lost connector. I'm actually probably going to ditch the connector and hardwire them in, but I won't know until I see them in person this weekend. I no longer have the stock connector in my car (I had to remove it when coming to the GT lights from the stock L lights).

I'll also be wiring in the headlight leveling switch at some point, but not immediately.

Here is some useful info on he gauge cluster connectors. As for HID connectors, they may also be on this site but I don't know for certain.

Here is a nice little piece of information... It turns out that Mouser Electronics sells the connectors used on these clusters.. so we would no longer need to destroy the harness out of another car..

As for the sockets, for some reason they only have the 14pin socket available.. They have plenty of other configurations, but no 30, 16, or 18 pin versions, but I did shoot an email to Mouser to see if they are planning on carrying them. I am also looking at other vendors as well and I will update this when I find more information.

EDIT: I found the sockets, all but the 30 are a "stocked but backordered" item. The 30pin is "non stocked" but orderable.

your video is private :(

also it seems your blue halos have some hotspotting? from the LEDs? maybe its just the picture

amgarrety
10-01-2012, 07:33 AM
Well the LEDs don't shine directly into the halos, the shine into a little plastic prism that distributes the light around the ring as evenly as possible. Inevitably though, you will get a slight hotspot near the light source, as the light sort of dies by the time it reaches the other side of the halo. For this reason, the big halos have 2 lights each, and the small have one light. That also tells you the number of hotspots, but due to the way they distribute light, they are invisible unless you take a picture, just as what happens when you put colored bulbs in the USDM cluster.

So I went through a few of my old pictures looking for a certain photo, and while doing that, I found some of these old photos of my car. So I'll post them here while we wait for me to install my HID headlights and JDM gauge cluster and post actual progress on my car.

The day I bought my car:

And the green that I magically turned into a car:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8055578400_f18c728a41_z-1.jpg

It rained the day I bought it and I had things to do, so it sat partially in the garage until the rain ended:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8055579834_0352b13c53_z-1.jpg

And back before I was really a part of the forum (I had an account, but hadn't really posted yet), I did my first mod, changing my gauge cluster to blue. Here is a picture of the process:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8055580292_b02f2ed29e_z-1.jpg

And a last few pictures:

She's come so far :')

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8055593441_f7555f3941_z-1.jpg

But anyway, the picture I went back for was a picture of my current cluster to get a side by side of new and old. So pardon the crappy picture, but here is what I came up with.

New headlights are installed! The quality is a bit worse than my non-HID headlights, but that is expected from a used set of lights. The only downside to these lights, I just discovered, is that there is a bit of a condensation leak. That will be fixed, because I hate condensation in my lights. I'm less than happy with that, but otherwise, the lights are great. Amazing light output! Some pictures, you ask?

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8058007146_cfa1983786_z-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8058010055_22a02650cb_z-1.jpg

Horrible night time photos, but so you can see how bright they are next to the stock fog lights:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8058008000_552b1ab72f_z-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8058008306_4ba88269b1_z-1.jpg

I'm keeping my other non-HID lights for car shows, since they are much clearer when they are off. The HID lights are much brighter, so I have them on my car for practicality. Both lights are set up with quick connect and disconnect so changing out lights takes about 30 seconds after taking the bolts out.

rkrenicki
10-05-2012, 09:54 PM
Yea, I am a fan of these HIDs as well, I lucked out and the pair I bought are very clear, there is just some stress cracks along the drivers side one that diffuses the light a little bit, but its not that bad.

Did you do anything with the levelers on these yet? That is probably my next project..

Not yet, I'm expecting my switch to come in some time early next week. However, wiring is very simple.

And here is Subaru's official diagram, if it is easier for you to understand since I know you're into electronics more than I am:

Progress on the gauge cluster is about to accelerate. I finally have all the parts I need, and I have the resources I need to get it all working. It is just a matter of doing it.

In the meantime, I'm getting my headlights ready for the leveling switch that is coming in early next week. That meant fixing the connectors for the leveling motors. The exporter decided to clip the wires for the connector too short to do anything with, so those old wires needed to be replaced with something longer that I could work with. That is what was completed last night.

Before:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8064003730_ee0509d441_z-1.jpg

After:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8063664727_d1a2ca723c_z-1.jpg

Now we (myself and a friend much more qualified in the area of electronics) are going to hook up a sort of mock switch to see if we can get the motors working.

amgarrety
10-07-2012, 04:35 PM
And the mock switch works! Which means as soon as I get the OEM switch (I'm hoping for before wednesday), it'll get hooked up!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmj5h6Ql0OU

DRLs are now disabled on my car, and I'm working on independent fogs now to use those as DRLs now that I can no longer use my low beams (HIDs don't like being run at a voltage less than what they are designed for).

amgarrety
10-08-2012, 02:54 AM
A long night of work, but finally, just before 2am, independent fogs! A few pictures then I need to sleep.

Just fogs, no other lights:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8065879353_eb039b8ba5_z-1.jpg

Fogs and parking lights:

And low beams and fogs, as normal.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8065881423_8866365c65_z-1.jpg

I elected to not enable them to be on with high beams. It's a feature I can enable another time, but this more than covers the things I need it to (basically DRLs).

I don't understand why they do that, why not wire it the same way as in Europe.
I can run the foglights with parkinglights, drivinglights and highbeams. Or i can run without any lights.
The only lights that are dependant on others are the rear foglamps wich only work if i have either of the front lights on except parkinglights.
Those i do understand though because then they are off by default.

I don't understand rear fog lights. Firstly, where are they on the car? And what are they for? I don't know if the US market has them, and if they do, I sure don't know how to use them. They wouldn't seem useful though, becuase you don't really need to see behind you all that much.

rkrenicki
10-10-2012, 10:33 AM
I believe it is more of an indicator light that will cut through the fog so that drivers behind you have a better chance of seeing you.

If you see the bright red light on the back of a Saab, Mercedes or Audi which looks like a "stuck-on" brake light on one side, that is a rear fog light.

amgarrety
10-10-2012, 10:43 AM
Gotcha! Ok, that makes a lot of sense now.

Huffer
10-10-2012, 10:57 AM
The rear fog light is used so that someone following knows to pass on the OUTSIDE of that light. So for LHD, the passing is on the left side of the car - the fog should be on the driver's rear.
In RHD countries, vice versa.

After some searching on google, it seems that Subaru is using that little triangular red light in the center below the bumper as a rear fog on their newer Imprezas and the BRZ. So does that mean that it isn't mandatory to have it behind the driver?

Legacy89
10-10-2012, 11:58 AM
I don't think so. My BC had lights on both sides, i modified the JDM lights to light up both on the BE.

So what happened. In bumper to bumper traffic, the car in front of me sped up, so I sped up. He hit his brakes too quickly, I was a little late and gave him a love tap, then the car behind be hit me, and a fourth car railed all of us. I had little damage until the last car. Here is a picture of the fourth car that his us pretty hard:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8081198507_696e7feb02_z-1.jpg

And the car I hit:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8081193460_b4b0f81df4_z-1.jpg

As far as damage goes, I am EXTREMELY lucky. Firstly no one was hurt, which was good. I have absolutely no damage to my rear end, aside from one scuff on the bumper which is hardly visible. As far as the hood goes, it is beyond repair, so I'm switching back to my stock hood until I can get another turbo hood (mark my words, I will). With the grille, I took it off, and it isn't warped as all, but a lot of it is cracked. There is no visible damage, but the cracks are there, just well hidden. Four of the six mounting bolts broke, so I only have the two outer mounting points and the one that bolts behind the emblem. The headlights are fine except for two mounting points on the drivers side. Easily fixable. The radiator support and radiator are bent, but fixable.

So what needs done is I need a new radiator, I need to straighten the frame, and I need to swap on my old hood and my silver B4 grille. I'll keep the HID headlights in. It is also getting suspension looked at tomorrow to make sure everything is ok.

It just sucks, because I have no money to pay for an increase in insurance, a citation for following to close (even though it was bumper to bumper traffic), and any repairs I need. There may be a chance I will take this car off the road until I have a job again, just to save me the cost of insurance (which I get billed for next month).

I'll keep you all updated, but until then, I have no intent on halting work on my gauge cluster or HID leveling switch. I have my priorities.

I think just the radiator support. I'll do some work on it tomorrow to find out for sure. I haven tried the horns, but I have two more sets, so if they are busted, I'll swap them out.

The good news is i'm not liable for anything but a small scratch on the bumper of the Subaru I hit. Everything else is up to the people behind me (except the damage to my car, I don't know if I can get their insurance to pay for it yet or if I have to take the cost myself).

Post some pics of the rear of your car. If you didnt have the damage from the first hit, and then that 2nd hit gave you that front end damage, You might have something messed up under your bumper.

My BD got a bent rail, and the car still looks fine.

The front will be cake to fix, a little pulling action on the core support and hood and grill and your golden! However, you might need something on the rear. Also look to see if your seat is bent at all. Most of the time in rear end hits, the seat will get bent. Sometimes not.

Like I said on FB, call your insurance agent. Talk to them because I can tell you now, this will be a fiasco with how many cars are involved and you might get you car fixed, but the other guy.

Also, did anyone get a ticket? And where you at fault or not? I figure for the first hit yes, but the second that caused all that damage should not be on you.

The rear appears to be fine. We just took the car to a shop to have everything looked at and they told me there were no problems. So that is good. We patched the radiator, and it is holding up fine, so my plan is to get it back to State College and just let it sit for awhile.

All of us got a ticket for "following too close", which I think is BS because it was bumper to bumper traffic, but at least it wasn't something ridiculous. Yes, I'm at fault for the damage to the car in front of me (almost none), but as far as the rest of the damage to my car goes, I'm unsure.

Yeah, I'm happy I didn't get hurt or anything, and I know it's replaceable, but I'm still mourning the loss of such a rare grille. My bank account also severely impacts how replaceable my hood is. I really shouldn't complain, but I put a lot of time and money into how my car looked, and its just shocking how quick all of that can be ruined. It makes me not want to do anything more to my car. It'll just be wasted money if I ever get into an accident again. I love my car, but it is hard being in college and having to fund such an expensive hobby.

The good news, is, it is all pretty much fixed. I patched the radiator temporarily, bent the support back into alignment, and swapped hoods/grilles. There is also a metal brace holding my drivers side headlight in place. All in all, you can't tell anything happened until you get close and see some gaps around the headlights, but it is much better looking than it was.

I'd also like to add something that I am very excited about. So, that JDM gauge cluster is cool, but I want a little more coolness from it. So I let one of my friends with a deep background in electronics loose with my new JDM gauges. Needless to say, he is working on something I miss about driving the BL/BP. In his exact words: "So far, it'll be the only BE in the world I know of that will do this. In fact, it might be the only car to do it that didn't come from the factory with it."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWTaTDKW ... r_embedded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWTaTDKWJkU&feature=player_embedded)

(Hint, that happens once when you turn the ignition on.)

He's got it on a loop, but that is needle sweeping (or staging), being adapted to the JDM cluster. The timing is a bit off right now, and there are still somethings to be tinkered with, but he's been making a lot of progress, and he is very excited to bring this functionality to a car that was never designed to have it. I'm really excited about this entire project.

So you want it to act a little like a 2007+ Caterpillar with the dials doing a sweep before you start it?

rkrenicki
10-14-2012, 07:06 AM
Is that driving the servos directly, or a modification to the existing electronics to do that?

I guess it will all come down to timing, at what point of the bootup process is that going to happen?

Driving the servos directly. He's working on a chip that works parallel to the normal startup process, but doesn't interfere. So it will likely be in a small package like the speedo resistor, and it will attempt to sandwich somewhere in between the servo and the pins.

I want it to happen after the needles light up, but before the backlight lights up. That may be too hard to delay the backlight, so we might just wait until everything is on. We'll rely on a signal from the board though, not a delay, because I've noticed that sometimes the cluster lights up faster than others.

rkrenicki
10-14-2012, 06:06 PM
you could have that circuit be powered by the needle illumination, that way it should do it almost immediately afterwards. As long as it does not interfere with the normal operation of the servo control..

amgarrety

That's what we were planning on, actually triggering the motion with the needle illumination. I think we are also going to delay the backlight from lighting up until the needles complete their sweep, and that will be easy because the power supply for the backlight is a giant metal box with easy to intersect wires in the back.

I will have to talk to him about how it might conflict with the natural operation, because that is true, if I start it too fast, the needles might not complete their sweep by the time the cluster gets information about the RPM.

Some better news regarding the car, it drove 5 hours on the highway today with no problems, and over 3 and a half of those hours were continuous (from Maryland to State College). So the radiator patch is holding up well. I'm still not completely convinced it is a perfect solution, but it will hold me over until I get a new radiator.

Now lets see what I can get from insurance. That will tell me which direction this car goes in next (and I've got some ideas). One of those ideas is to get another turbo hood and continue where I left off, but I may have better plans if money cooperates.

The headlight level switch is wired up and works! I'll get a video sometime soon. As for a write-up, we'll see. My method was not simple to do, but it avoided having to pass any wires through the firewall. It's not something you would want to do if you wanted the quickest way to get them working.

Yep, here is exactly what I did.

The switch needed 6 wires connected:
-Illumination
-12v Ignition
-Left Headlight Signal
-Right Headlight Signal
-Illumination Grouns
-Ignition Ground

Since Subaru prewires all of their features, even if they aren't used, I had the windshield wiper defroster wiring, but not the button. I put the leveling switch in that spot, and cut the connector for the deforester off, leaving me with some wires. By default, it had an illumination wire and both grounds, so that was 3 wires knocked out right there. Then I tapped into my ignition relay to get my 12v ignition signal, however, to avoid running it through the firewall, instead of using the same wire to power the lights themselves, I used two different 12v sources; one in the cabin for the switch, and one in the engine bay for the lights. More on that later, but moral of the story is, I only had two more wires to go, and they had to get through the firewall. I narrowed it down to one wire after I realized they sent exactly the same signal. Then I remembered back to when I did my independent fog lights, and we used the 12v ignition from a rear windshield washer reservoir motor, but left the ground alone, and we knew the ground went inside the car (as most of the electrical system is ground switched). So we just pulled up some wiring diagrams, found the washer motor wire, connected the signal to the washer motor wire inside, and just like that, it was through the firewall.

On the outside, each light needed 12v ignition, signal, and ground. Grounds were easy, just pick some bare metal. For the signal, we just ran from that washer motor ground to each headlight. For 12v ignition, we used the 12v source from the positive side of the washer motor (the same wire we used for our independent fogs).

The result was only one wire having to go through the firewall instead of three, and we didn't actually have to do the work of finding a way through ourselves.

rkrenicki
10-17-2012, 02:38 PM
there is a great rubber plug in the firewall for running wires through. I generally cut an X in the rubber, and pass the wires through that to use it as a protection from rubbing against the metal and possibly shorting out in the future. I have done that on all of my subarus over the years as it is there on all of my cars.

amgarrety
10-17-2012, 04:18 PM
Where is that? Just incase I ever need to run anything through my firewall again. I don't know how many vacant wires I have. I know how to get through the firewall on the passenger side, but not the drivers side.

Also, the BFM harness is just about complete! I just have to wait for the mileage chip to get here so it can be soldered to the circuit board, and then it is plug and play from there!

BFM is in and it works! Well, all the important stuff works. The ONLY noticeable problems are with the door ajar display. I reversed my front doors, and my rear drivers door and trunk ajar lights don't light up. Only my passenger side rear door lights up correctly. Not a big deal, and something I still have time to fix. I have to wait for my speedo resistor to come in before the project is completely done, so I have probably until Saturday to get those wires straight. Everything else, all lights, features, speedo, tach, gas, and temp gauges all work fine! Dimming is a little weird, but it works until I get the last 3 dimming pins wired up.

Also, HUGE thanks to rkrenicki for reprogramming my mileage chip. Now the cluster matches my car's actual mileage!

Ok, now for show and tell.

The front doors did not match color to color for me, I had to reverse them. I believe that had to do with "Driver" and "Passenger" being different on JDM vs USDM.

My trunk indicator does not work either, but I do not believe there is a switch for my car.

Are you going to do the 3-wire dimmer lines? you can tap into the car harness instead of cracking open the stalk like I did.

Yeah, I was stupid and didn't pay attention when wiring up those two wires. All fixed now! Thats good to know your trunk doesn't work as well. And I found out what the problem with my drivers side rear door was - the pin accidentally shifted to the row below it when I jammed the connectors together. I straightened it out and it should go in the correct hole now next time I connect them.

I do wish to wire up those three dimmer wires. They are attached and taped off, ready to go. If you know how to do it, that would be great.

And the hot spots really show up in the pictures, but they are nearly invisible in person. If anything, you can see the parts where the light fades a bit, but really, I don't care all that much. The blue looks too good to care in my opinion.

Yea, after it didn't work the first time, I went back there to look for the switch but didn't find it. I can't imagine that it would be complicated to add it, but it's not that big of a deal that it does not work.

No wait, it cant be.. its behind the brake pedal, and comes out just to the left of the brake master cylinder. In my 04 it was hidden under the sound deadening.

EDIT: Nope, that is not where it is.. its up above the gas pedal.. I snapped a photo of mine.

I'm finding that the 3 wires that come from the stalk are LG, L, and GR. Unfortunately, they only go to the illumination control module. So they will need intercepted.

That sounds right. I guess you could scotchlock into them right in the column or over by the illumination module, but that is essentially what I did by soldering straight to the stalk itself.

As for running wires through the firewall.. I would poke around under and around the brake master cylinder to see if there are any rubber plugs there.. my Gen 1 had one there, you could barely see it from the engine bay.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/8103776627_f70fd62b96_z-1.jpg

And as soon as I had it, I soldered it up and installed the BFM immediately so I can use my car agin. My interior is now back together, just a little bit messy.

The dimmer works now, which makes me happy. Also, as I said earlier, I got my door ajar lights working, however, upon plugging them in, my passengers side rear door doesn't light up. All other doors light up correctly. So I said screw it. That'll be a project for another day. I'm just happy to have it all done, and to have my speedo reading MPH (it seems pretty accurate, compared to my phone).

Now what do I do?

My BFM already had this done, but you may want to take the smoked plexi off, and put a black sticker over the "k" in km/h so that it reads "m/h".

I am not sure how your state is for inspections or emissions, but mine would freak if they saw "km/h" and my explaining that it was adapted would turn into a conversation about odometer tampering...

Having it read m/h is good enough for me to keep the inspection lackeys at bay.

Mine is just as accurate as the old one.. perfect up to about 50mph, then it starts reading faster than my actual speed. When it reads "65" I am actually going closer to 61-62. "80" = 74

Otherwise, that blue looks badass.

We'll see when the time comes, I don't need inspected until next August. I don't really want to go that route, because I like the km/h so much better, and that's extra work, but a the same time, I understand where the problems are. I have friends at the place who inspect my car, so ill see if I can talk to them beforehand. I might even just say my original cluster crapped out on me and I had to replace it. That's legal.

I'm happy to hear it reads a little faster at higher speeds. That's just an extra buffer when I'm driving through a heavy cop area, since I like driving between the speed limit and 5 over.

I do still have them, but the lenses are pretty messed up. I got acetone on one by accident. They would just need new lenses (actually, only the drivers side if I remember correctly). That being said, you probably won't want them, but I don't necessarily need them anymore, so they are for sale.

Also, some night shots from last night. I love this cluster.

hmm.. is your parking light burnt out? you should have a green indicator at around the 1 o'clock position of your tach indicating that the parking lights are on. it comes on with the normal purple illumination wire.

Mine worked for a day, and promptly burnt out. You have to take the CCFL inverter off to replace it.

Also, is your airbag light stuck on? That one is an oddity as it is on by default and needs +12v on its pin to turn off.

amgarrety

Thanks Yama. I was happy that these shots came out so well because they were taken with an iPhone.

I don't believe I have a parking light indicator, nor did I have one on m stock cluster. Ill have to look through old photos to see. And as for my airbag light, that's been on for over a year now. I can't figure out what the problem is but it's not the wiring or the cluster.

Yea, the USDM one didnt have it. I am going on the assumption that yours and mine are identical except for the PRND321 and Sportshift indicators, which tells me that it should have a parking light indicator when the illumination is on.

It is right around the 5.5k RPM mark as seen here:

It does seem that I have it. I didn't think I did, so I guess my bulb is burnt out. Which doesn't bother me all that much, but maybe I'll change it if I ever take it out. I don't like extra lights being lit up, which is why I clear my check engine light each time it pops up, and I've been considering just removing my airbag light. Still, it might be useful.

Is yours on when you have your lights fully on? Or is it just when you have it set to the parking light position?

Do I really need to explain what I did with my morning?

Just to cover it all, I grabbed a few cool parts for my car today (compliments of YamazakiSubaru). I grabbed his entire D-type front end conversion, which includes a hood, a bumper, a set of headlights, two grilles, and while I was at it, I got some side skirts too, which aren't D-type, but I still picked those up today. As you can see, he and I went to town and got all the parts on pretty fast. The side skirts need painted yet, so they won't be on my car for a little bit. Due to the accident I had awhile ago, there are some noticable gaps, but I plan to get those professionally taken care of soon. I was able to fix it to the point where there are nearly no visible gaps, and the only issue comes with closing the hood. It just takes a little force, but I've learned how to do that without denting the aluminum.

The only issue that arose was my headlight leveling switch, which stopped working with these new headlights. I'll have to investigate and see what that is all about.

I guess I'll need to go for a nice photoshoot soon.

Also, for those trying to keep count, I'm up to 6 grilles, 4 pair of headlights, and 3 hoods. Needless to say, I'll be posting a for sale thread soon.

Even though the car didn't have adjusting headlights, did the headlights themselves still have the socket for the connector? This makes me curious.

I am very happy with my A-C types, I was just curious given the short amount of time that he mentioned if there was any actual trimming involved.

Yes, we only had an hour and a half to do it all, so I did all of the disassembly and most of the reassembly while Yamazaki did the trimming. Even with all that time, I still had to cut one tiny little lip off then I got home, but really, the trimming didn't take that long. The longest portion was changing out the cutting wheels every time he would break one (which was rather often). But to get it done in an hour and a half was pretty easy otherwise.

And the way Yamazaki works, doesn't surprise me they got it done right and fast.

Refer above to the comment about cutting wheels. No, but really, the fact that he had done it before and had thought through the process thoroughly really helped. He even thought of putting a protective coat on the metal we cut, which I would've completely looked over, but it is a very important step. Granted we ran out of time to do that, but it will get done this week.

Didnt you also have the JDM fender marker lights that you were going to put on?

I don't have them, because the fender needs work to make them fit (they need a recess to sit in, along with the hole cut), but I have access to them if I need them. I'm thinking about looking into side markers from another car, something that only needs a hole cut, but no recess; something to sit on the fender instead of inside it.[/quote]

Looking Good Mike!!!! I really need to take a day sometime and come down and visit. Maybe we can do a photoshot and get that write up done too.

This is probably the best picture of the skirts on my car.

The black does continue on both the front and back bumpers though.. and that sort of completes the look. If neither of those had the black on them, it would just sort of stick out like a sore thumb.

Yeah I agree. It looks good on your car but I think it would need to be silver on mine.

Definitely. The two-tone look barely works on the chunky Outback. I think the more svelte Legacy needs to remain all one color. It'll look good when you get around to it. Have you "put it on" just to see how it looks w/out a new paint job?

Yeah, and it looks fine in the shade, but in the sun light, I don't know. It doesn't look bad, but for all the work I have to put into it to put them on (drilling the holes and all), I might as well wait until they are painted.

Big thanks to Thomistopheles for a small but needed improvement to my car:

Looks good in your car! I really liked it, perfect size, but I wanted to change it up and run a delrin knob.

Haha I wish more people were into modding 3rd gens... they have such great potential.

Today I've got a few projects on my list. Anyone from the York, PA area is undoubtedly familiar with a material called "Plastidip", and for those who haven't heard of it before, it's that stuff you dip tools and whatever else into to get a rubberized coating. They also make it in a spray version, and it makes a great black coating that is very durable, yet stylish and easy to remove.

So I decided that with my black grille, the bottom of my bumper looked a little "bright". I felt that it needed to be black to continue the theme of my grille. I didn't want anything permanent... something I could remove if I didn't like it. Plastidip was the clear choice. (Please ignore my horrible masking job, I'm not a painter)

I'll post a picture when it is complete. I anticipate it looking nice, but it's always reversible

While I was at it, I decided to plastidip the chrome portion of my second grille until I could get it rechromed. So that is currently drying right now. You can see how chipped the chrome was:

And the simple solution:

-edit-

Just completed. I removed the masking tape a bit too early and some of the bottom peeled off. I might have to redo it soon.

And an update of how the plastidip coating is turning out:
