I definitely want to go to Agile, I'm just not good at planning that far in advance :P And I agree Graver, I want to see the beast in person.

All done with my project from earlier. Looks fine from afar but up close you can tell the plastidip doesn't like to create a clean line. What do you guys think about the look? I'm on the edge. I really want to get this (http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/fastwrx_2235_3382038) B4 decal (in silver) to stick on the black portion toward the driver's side, to sort of break up the black. I wanna see what you guys think though.

Here is what it looks like completed.

Says the guy with the Mica Blue RHD twin turbo STI Legacy

As far as updates go, I don't have any immediate big changes planned. For those telling me the car needs rims, I may have an update to satisfy you guys in a month or so (maybe a little more). I'm holding off on suspension because I can't afford both rims and a drop right now, plus dropping the car will force me to redo my exhaust because it already scrapes over small bumps. So we'll get there when we get there.

I'm thinking about looking into side markers from another car, something that only needs a hole cut, but no recess; something to sit on the fender instead of inside it.

Check out the BMW or Audi type sidemarkers for something unique, or look at the Honda DC5 ones for an easy install.

I've looked into BMW markers but I don't like some of they styles they have. They are pretty cheap to get a hold of though. I do like the style of Acura, Audi, and VW.

I never thought of that, but that would be really cool. I might give that a try today.

I like the simplicity there, but I'm looking for something with a clear (or lightly smoked) lens. I found some that I liked but I'm backtracking on that decision. Still searching....

Mazda has similar lights to Subaru.

That's a big ass cutout... The Honda DC5 ones are lower profile and the bulb housing is the only thing that drops into the hole so less error on cutting.

Good luck though, will be looking forward to the results!

amgarrety

Those DC5s aren't completely out of the question. I bought the Mazda markers because they resembled the OEM option, but that doesn't mean I'll necessarily stick with them. My thing with the DC5s are they require more of a rectangular cut out, which I woul expect to be more difficult, and the clear version of those markers seems to run rather expensive (although I'm beginning to find cheaper alternatives). Photoshop might help me with a decision tonight. I'm just worried about a boxier design.

Haha, it's all in the application Tanner

Did some measurements of the side markers that came in today. The hole, if cut with perfect 90ยบ angles, would be 55mm x 25 mm. That won't work though because when all corners are at perfect right angles, some of the cutout is visible behind the light. No big deal though, I'll cut out the extremes and round the corners between them. A test fit on cardboard:

What do you mean by shallow design?

Yamazaki
11-16-2012, 06:58 PM
Since I happen to have both on hand, I took some pictures. Note that it's nearly impossible to change the bulb on the shallow design also. You have to take off the cover, which inevitably breaks. The deep design is a simple removal.

I see. I was rather disappointed to see I couldn't remove my bulb, but I couldn't complain with the price tag.

Are those from the Japanese 3rd gens? They look exactly the same as mine, but the fender has a recess? Are you telling be I could've gotten the OEM version and it would look exactly the same, even if I didn't create a recess?

Yamazaki
11-16-2012, 07:12 PM
They're both from 3rd gen. Since the factory side blinkers are orange, one of these is from the catalogue, and the other is from cars like the Blitzen, S401, etc. I'll check the S401 later to see which is which.

amgarrety
11-16-2012, 07:16 PM
I would assume the ones with replaceable bulbs are stock and the non replaceable bulbs are catalogue.

Yamazaki
11-16-2012, 08:14 PM
Okay, I went and checked...
I thought it'd be like you said, but it turns out that the S401 has the shallow type. When I look at the part numbers I see that the shallow type is one digit higher though, so it makes sense. Weird. It seems like a downgrade. I might switch out the side blinkers on the S401 for the deep type and just give the "Blitzen" the shallow type.

But anyway, now you can say you have S401 side blinkers!

Yama, if these lights are the same as the S401, can you look at the back of the harness connector to see if there are any numbers on it? I am trying to source some connectors for his lights, but I am not 100% sure which one it is.

I think there would be either a 11153 or 10843 on the connector from what I am seeing on these sites, but I could be wrong.

Yamazaki
11-17-2012, 07:36 AM
I checked it out, but it was nothing I expected.
First, there are no markings on the connectors. Second, that isn't all that's in there. There's another connector in there with more wiring! Also, the connector on the S401 is white, but the pigtail connector I have for the deep type is black. The black connector only has "DM5" on it. No other markings.

Is this what it looks like?

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/DSC03659JPG-2.jpg

This is the picture of a toyota forum, but I am fairly sure that it is the correct connector. From what I can tell, it should have a 10843 on it somewhere.. It should be made by the same company that made the HID Leveler connectors, and is actually in the same series of connectors, just the two pole version instead of the three pole.

Yamazaki
11-17-2012, 08:52 AM
That's it.... except it looks like the plug-in is on the bottom in that pic. The plug-in's are in the top slots on these.

rkrenicki

Yea, this guy held the connector upside down, heh. The contacts should be in side with the side tabs, something about the way this picture was taken makes it look like they are offset.

amgarrety: I would bring one of the lights to a toyota dealer, and have them pull part 90980-10843 and check for proper fit. The dimensions I have a little narrower from what you gave me, but I do not see a wider version anywhere outside of a three-pole version.

Yes, it looks like on the light, the tabs are a little offset. I definitely noticed that, but I wasn't sure if that was just my imagination.

The dimensions might be a little off. I have a caliper somewhere, but I can't find it, so those measurements are from a metric tape measure.

rkrenicki
11-17-2012, 08:56 PM
Hmm.. I have not found good diagrams of that connector, so I cannot say for sure, but it does look to be about 20mm wide at the side tabs. I guess the really best way is to try one of the connectors at the toyota dealer, and if it does not fit, then perhaps they can match it up to something else they have.

It looks like Toyota is good about keeping their dealers stocked up on replacement connectors which I never knew until researching this.

Hmm.. I see a number of variations on the sumitomo website.. Unfortunately, they only have two dimensions listed, and no detail drawings for them.. I guess they depend on matching markings.. Or knowing the application.

I guess without some detailed measurements in data sheets, it's all guessing for me based on what I can infer from pictures.

amgarrety

I might look into getting the actual connectors from Mazda. They would obviously have them (even though they aren't listed in the parts database).

So, I decided to take all of the plastidip off of my spare D-type grille so I could redo the entire thing instead of just the chrome portion. My reasoning here is because using tape to create a smooth line doesn't work so well, and also, I found out I can remove the emblem to get the entire grille without even a little bit of protective tape.

I did find something interesting when removing the emblem though:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/8197035608_4a44cca760_z-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/8195942033_16ee32a421_z-1.jpg

The shape of that mounting area behind the Subaru badge looks too familiar. I don't believe the D-type had an L7 badge at all, yet this looks like the grille might have been made to accommodate one.

I might see if I can find a spare L7 badge somewhere just to try out. It might fit there, even without modification. You can see the two mounting "posts" that stick out from the back of the badge; they might fit in the corresponding holes on the grille.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/attachmentphpattachmentid121672stc1thumb-1.jpg

Also, just added a bit of a finishing touch to the plastidip'd portion of my bumper:

These won't fit your car very well, you need the hood and bumper to match. You can make them fit, but you'll have some gaps. If you really want some, one of the guys just put a set up for sale. Check out the Legacy for sale forum, it should be a more recent post.

amgarrety
11-19-2012, 09:59 AM
Yep, every thing A-C type is interchangeable with other A-C type parts. D-Type parts are only interchangeable with other D-type parts.

All a front end really consists of is a hood, a bumper, headlights, and the grille. They all have to be the same type (I'm considering A-C as one type) for no gaps, however sometimes they can technically be mixed (such as your D-Type bumper or the lights), but there will be gaps. To ensure no gaps, just make sure everything is the same type.

I know I'm being extremely petty about this (and I really do apologize, amgarrety, for posting it here), but why use the term "revision" when it means something very different? As I've said before, Subaru has never used the term in that context and I challenge anybody to prove me wrong.

I've been thinking about this, and my only assumption is this. For what it's worth, each letter does signify a change (no matter how small) between years. I'm guessing that is where the term "revision" came from. Since we never had a difference over here in the states, we could care less what revision of the car we have. However, over in Japan, they have two different styles. Since many of us don't speak Japanese and don't know that Subaru refers to it as "type" specifically in their catalogues, I think who ever coined the term (whether they tried or not) considered it a revision of the years before it. So you would have revision A (even though that makes no sense because there was nothing before it), revision B, revision C, and finally revision D, or rev D.

That is the only explanation I can think of, and to be honest, I can see it being a justified way of thinking until you learn that Subaru legitimately called it D-type. And as I can tell you all myself from listening to Yamazaki say it in Japanese, it even sounds like "type" in english. It is pronounced something along the lines of "D-tipa".

elislider
11-19-2012, 06:52 PM
they did the same thing on the turbo imprezas. Type A-C were EJ20G even though theres only technically a "version 1" (well technically it didnt have a number) and "version 2" included in those 3 types. Then types D-E were versions 3 and 4 (ej20k) then types F-G were v5/6 (EJ205 or EJ207). Subaru never (IIRC) used the word "type" but it was adopted by mainly aftermarket parts manufacturers as an easy way to refer to a particular model/style without giving specific year ranges (like 1996.5 or 1996-June). just look at the VIN tag and you'll know what type it is

its just a delineation based on VIN codes and model codes. any better way to refer to a specific model is usually better so saying "Legacy revision A-C" may not technically be an accurate use of the word "revision" but "type" is probably a better substitute

Thanks, yeah those are scratches. This bumper was the one Yama was using for the Blitzen6 until he got the car painted, so there is a little wear and tear from his driveway. I'm afraid to fix it though because the paint on the bumper matches the rest of my car (in terms of fade), and without blending it, I won't get that color from a repaint.

rougeben83
11-21-2012, 11:30 AM
yeah, nothing beats the factory paint; I learned it the hard way my I had my rear bumper repainted; I think the paint guy didn't prep a small section properly so there's a bubble right under the driver's side sail panel...

I know I'm being extremely petty about this (and I really do apologize, amgarrety, for posting it here), but why use the term "revision" when it means something very different? As I've said before, Subaru has never used the term in that context and I challenge anybody to prove me wrong.

LOL... When I was reading it, I was like "when Is Yamazaki gonna chime in?"... I do agree though. With 2nd gens we have scoop and non scoop hoods. They are not revisions, but different trims. A revision would be say the 95-97 and 98-99 headlights since they are by year. Or even if you look at a 240sx s13. 89-90 is early then 91-93 is late. Having a lip on a bumper is trim, not a reversion. At least thats how I'm seeing it... The reference to type a, b... ect I think is a more proper/technical way and thats the way I am as well.

Anyway, Car is looking great Mike! Love th headlights and the rest of the front end. :smt023 Not so much for the black on the bumper, but to each his own.

I wasn't sure what to think about the bumper at first (and that is why I did it in Plastidip), but I love it now. And looking back at the bumper before I blacked it out, it definitely needed done (IMO). It looks much more aggressive in person than in any photo I've taken so far. No surprise, I don't take the best pictures, that is something I seriously need to work on after browsing that calendar thread...

I have some cool news for the people who think I need new rims. I may get a set around February. I'm looking at taking MRLancaster's old Prodrives and painting them a metallic silver (or possibly a metallic gunmetal). And since MRLancaster is such a cool dude, he did a photoshop for me. I have to say, February can't get here soon enough.

Hahaha but really! Do you know how long it takes to warm up that rear window on a cold morning to remove all the condensation? It is so inconvenient. My modding got to a point where I thought I was done, then I had my accident, and that was like a catalyst to do more things to it with my D-type front end. It's like, you get one thing, and all this other stuff has to follow. The front end made the car ask for a drop, and the drop asked for new rims and a redone exhaust. Let me go harvest my money tree.

And I'm very biased when it comes to gunmetal. It is my favorite material, but I think it is often done incorrectly when used as a paint color. So I'll do some testing, and if I can get it to a point that I like it, gunmetal will win :)

Since the last post kind of got the shaft being at the bottom of the last page, let me bump it to the top of this page. Because I'm really excited.

I hope to get them into paint this week, and then maybe pick them up next time I'm home. No guarantee if that will happen in that timely fashion, but I can't do the painting myself with living in an apartment complex now. I'll call up my guy and see what he will do it for, and hopefully we'll get them on there soon, because honestly, I would've loved to see that photoshopped picture above with the sideskirts on it. Same exhaust, just getting the piping redone because the people who did it the first time did a terrible job, and now it hangs lower than it is supposed to. Right now I scrape going over bumps at a stock height. That needs to be fixed.

Thanks! Speaking of changes, did a test fit of the skirts today, but my hands went numb before I could figure out how to install them. Subaru has plugged holes for all of the mounting points along the bottom of the rocker panel, so I just have to find the right fastener to hold up the side skirts (they seem to be somewhat rectangular). There are 7 clips on the inner side of the skirts to hold them to the side of the rocker panel, but they appear to require me drilling into the rocker panel itself. I think I may be able to get away without drilling those holes if I use every other fastener.

I actually don't know how his paint matching is. I normally just have him paint it the stock color, and it is a little bit off, but not enough to bother me. On something like a door, I could see it being more necessary. I don't really know of a way of testing it though haha. I would definitely get in contact with him to see how much he would do everything for, maybe send him pictures. I love giving him business and all, but I don't want you to travel too far and not know what you're getting. You might want to look into finding someone closer who can guarantee a certain quality. I, being a poor college student, sacrifice a bit of quality to keep costs low and to keep the car looking good.

Yeah I'll be getting those bottom clips at some point. I already have the side clips for the rockers, and I will have to drill into the rockers. I don't expect that to be so bad. I just need to find out which clips hold on the bottom. They look like they are supposed to be rectangular, but I had no luck finding any such clips at any auto stores. I did find a website that sells OEM Subaru clips, so I'll probably order them from there, especially since I need to order a bunch of clips that have broken or gone missing since the car was new anyway.

The clips for the bottom are kind of like the clips that hold your bumper on, but much chunkier. I may have a spare or two around. I'll take a picture if I can find one. Otherwise, I'd just go to the junkyard and start pulling the clips off of the cars there.

The front doesn't have any sort of cap on it, but the back should, and it looks like that may be on your car? I mean, you definitely have something there that I don't, but it doesn't look attached to the skirt in the way I expected it to be. It might not be necessary except for rust prevention, but even so, my car never came with any such protection in that area. It has been exposed for as long as I've had it, and I'm assuming it came that way from factory. Living in the "rust belt" though, it really doesn't hurt to take what ever precautions I can.

No new updates with any of the other projects I've been working on. But, I have some inspiration for a new project. I'd like to do it, but we'll see how easy it is before I dig too deep into it.

This inspiration came completely from the new 2014 Forester.

Firstly, I would need to paint all of my wood grain pieces a dark silver, and clear coat it so it is shiny and smooth. Then I would make a custom hazard switch that is a darker glossy red, exactly like in the Forester below. I don't know if the Forester does this next part, but it looks like it could. I would put a light behind the hazard switch so it could light up, and it would blink red with the rest of the lights. Kind of a notice that your hazards are on (not like the indications in your cluster weren't enough, but I think it would be a really cool touch). Thoughts?

Great picture! Although it looks like my car is flying away.... It needs to be lower.

Also, I got my clips today for my sideskirts. I could technically put the sideskirts on now, but I want to drill the holes in my rocker panel first, so we'll have to wait until it is dry and maybe a bit warmer. I tested all my clips and they all fit great.

And I've been meaning to ask this for awhile. I don't expect a lot of people to know, I'm mostly directing this question at someone who has a BFM.

Every once in awhile, I come back to my car and upon looking inside, I see the rings on my BFM illuminated. I catch it before and after unlocking my car, and the rings turn off as soon as I open my door. They don't seem to have a pattern either. I left my car sitting for over 2 hours and came back to it with the rings on, this all before unlocking my car, so it doesn't seem to have anything to do with unlocking my car. I just want to make sure this won't kill my battery. I don't think it will because those rings are LED lit, but I'm also a little curious as to if it is a feature, or if I wired something wrong. It doesn't happen all the time, but the fact that it happens unpredictably makes me curious. Here are two photos:

amgarrety
12-10-2012, 10:17 AM
Hmm. That's odd. I didn't mention this, but more often, when I unlock my doors, if the rings aren't on, as soon as I open a door, they blink quickly. I'm really not sure what the issue could be. Maybe I have a defective cluster? Not that it is a huge deal, but I also have smaller problems like one of my ring LEDs not lighting up until after being on for about 15 minutes (that's a pretty reliable time table).

It looks like I'll need to take this cluster out soon and take a look at it.

rkrenicki
12-10-2012, 10:35 AM
Do you have the security light wire hooked up to something on this cluster? The only other thought that I have, which I feel bad even bringing up, is something was damaged when the magical blue smoke was released during testing of this cluster that has resulted in this odd behavior... :(

amgarrety
12-10-2012, 11:18 AM
Well, we concluded that the trace that was damaged sent a signal to the "passenger door ajar" light. We ended up soldering a solid core wire to the board to bypass that trace, and it seems to work fine now. Does that completely rule out the possibility of damage? No. But I would expect a damaged trace to cause something to not work at all, where as these LEDs appear to be doing overtime

My car never came with a security light feature (I believe that was only an option on the GT and Outback), but that thought has crossed my mind. Just like the actual security light though, I would expect that it would probably blink, not remain steady, and it would happen all the time.

Right now the magical blue smoke seems to be the most likely, but in my mind it is still hard to figure that scenario out.

rkrenicki
12-10-2012, 11:30 AM
Oh, so it was just a trace.. I guess I either forgot that or didnt know that. Well, that is good news, but I cant seem to think of any explanation for your halos coming on.

Dead91silvia
12-10-2012, 12:46 PM
Could it be tied to the alarm? I know some cars the dash lights blink with the alarm/keyless entry going on or off. Maybe for some reason they thing they are the security light...

Legacy89
12-10-2012, 01:31 PM
Mine is not equipped with an alarm, yet it has a little red flashin LED to scare the thieves.
But since it's lit konstantly there must be a occasional 12v+ to 12v+ short.
And those are the worst kind of fault to troubleshoot, especially when you fix equipment other people drive.
Does it go away when you unlock/open doors?

rkrenicki
12-10-2012, 01:46 PM
Or, perhaps one of the wires is pulling out of the male connectors and shorting out on something. That is one of the main reasons why I decided to go with the circuit board route, as those pins pulled out too easily for my tastes. Since I took the dash apart a half dozen times, each time at least one wire pulled out during the fiddling around I was doing back there. Since the majority of these wires are ground circuits, it could be something as simple as shorting to something metal in the car.

amgarrety
12-10-2012, 02:33 PM
Legacy89, it goes away when I open the door, but it doesn't go away if I just unlock it. I need to actually open the door.

I've never caught it happening in the morning, it normally only happens after leaving the car sit from a short to moderate length of time.

And rkrenicki, how much is that board you are making? That may be a safer route to go. I'm afraid to remove mine for the same reason.

When I use the keyless, the cabin light comes on but turns off when I start the car. If I do nothing, it'll eventually fade. If your console acts like that, maybe some wires got crossed in there? I know there is a direct cabin light connection in the back of the cluster....

It's a thought.

Unfortunately, the board side of my adapter is specific to the H6 USDM pinout, the JDM cluster side is what is easily changable.

As for the rest of the answer, I am going to go put it in the other thread as to not clutter up your MR1 post.

Yama: is that the "Car outline" that lights up for the cabin?

Those rings are on before I unlock my car, and go off as soon as I open my door, while my cabin light stays on. Personally, I think it would be cool if the rings acted with the cabin lights, and I sort of wish that were the case haha.

The problem is, it seems to happen so randomly I don't think I could replicate it on cue.

Thats what i say, what i do in these cases i temporaraly replace wires on the weird acting component, drive it for a few miles and check again.

Happens a lot on wheel loaders/dump trucks. Either that or a "wiggletest" but that does not always work.

maybe your wiring for the dimmer is shorting (wasnt that an issue you had to tackle before?)

also i'm pretty sure the security feature is still part of the wiring, because you can add the kit and not have to fuck with the cluster. you just add a Gsensor, horn/siren, and a relay or something

I keep looking at my diagrams, and I really cant figure out what would cause that to happen from an input perspective. No single wire directly controls the Halos.

I wonder if it is because it has LEDs in them? I know that when I tried to replace all of my indicator bulbs with LEDs, I had some weird behavior with some of them, like the Low Fuel light and the Alternator light, they would be on either all of the time, or opposite of what they should have been. I chalked it up to the different resistance in the circuit and the cluster did not know what to do with it.. but those problems were consistent and not intermittent like yours.

amgarrety
12-11-2012, 12:59 PM
In response to not knowing of a single wire that powers just the halos, I did discover while messing around with the cluster before installing it that of those 4 wires necessary to turn the cluster on, removing one of the grounds (I think the one on the A connector) turned JUST thaw Halos off, but left the backlight and needles on.

While not consistent, the LED bulbs sound like a possible cause. I didn't replace any other bulbs, and I'm not getting any other erratic behavior from other lights. Just the LEDs.

So I messed around a bit with the sideskirts today. It was rather nice out, so I thought I'd give it a try. I wanted to see if I could install the skirts without drilling any holes, as marking the location of the holes was proving to be a little difficult, and it seems like I may not be able to drill one or two due to their locations on the rocker panel (they line up with gaps in the body). So I tried just using the 6 clips on the bottom, plus two clips in the front wheel-well. What I found out discouraged me. Those side clips are absolutely crucial to the sideskirt attaching to the car. I thought I might be able to get away without them, but that isn't the case. The absence of those clips makes it possible to just step on the top of the sideskirt and break every one of the six retaining clips holding it in from the bottom (which is how I had to remove those clips). I wouldn't feel safe on the highway without at least some of the side clips in there. I figure I'll only drill the holes that I can, and leave the clips that reside on gaps out of the equation. That won't be until I go home though. The good news is they skirts held on well enough to get a good idea of how they will look.

Other things; I installed my new shift boot, and it looks so much better than the old one. No pictures of that, but it looks exactly how you would expect it might, and being Nappa leather, it is very smooth looking too. Also, I just ordered a bracket for my front license plate so I can fit either a US or Japanese plate to it, and it also tilts. I'll be getting that in the mail next week. Here is what that looks like. You can see how easily it will make using any sized plate.

It is amazing to see the difference in look when parking next to a fully stock car, I did that a few weeks ago myself. Along those lines, I am excited to put mine next to yours and the "Blitzen 6" and/or S401 to see the differences in Feb. As I told Yamazaki, I just hope that I will be driving a "finished product" down, heh.

I never thought to look at the Japanese plate that I have to see if it was different spacing. I guess looking at it very briefly, it does look like the holes are closer together... or is it just that the overall size is smaller, and the US plate wont fit in the recess in the bumper?

Actually, the US plate is 12.5" wide and a Japanese plate is 13.5" wide. The holes are actually a bit wider on the Japanese bumpers.

I never really noticed that. I never put them side by side. A friend of mine gave it to me, and it has been sitting in a fedex envelope ever since to keep it from getting damaged as it was pretty scuffed up as it was. I seem to remember thinking it was slightly smaller than the US ones, but I suppose that the thought may have been opposite and that the US one was slightly smaller.. hah.

Ok. I got my tilting license plate holder in today. It allows me adjust the angle at which the license plate sits, but the main reason for it is because the holes in the bumper are for a Japanese license plate, therefore I can't put a US plate on it. This tilting thing works as an adapter, and it does that job very well. I'm less than please with the look though. It may have potential. I'll explain.

How it looks when the plate is in the normal orientation. I will be the first to say that I hate how it looks. It looks so stupid that I refuse to let my car sit with it like this. Click THIS (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8083/8298810390_e05c6a91a4_o.jpg) link for a zoomed version.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/8298810390_9b50a65920_z-1.jpg

Tilted back, it doesn't look absolutely horrific, but it still isn't good looking. Clicked for zoomed version. (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8493/8297759527_8cf6d4fa55_o.jpg)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/8297759527_e72c54264d_z-1.jpg

Here is my solution to the problem. As much as I hate to be "JDM YO", it just needs a Japanese sized plate. And I think tilted, it will look more like a style thing than trying to act like I have a Japanese car. So I'll be getting a Japanese plate. The US plate is just too small for that gap, even tilted.

Also, I am painting (with plastidip) the area within the license plate recess black. I'll probably paint the bracket black too. Here is an example of how that will look.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/6716009541_7fc8e48827_z-1.jpg

I think that will really fix the look. The Japanese plate will also need a frame, so I am in the search for something to replicate the EXACT frame in the picture above, with sharp edges.

If none of this works, I'll go for a plate delete, but I'm struggling to find an alternative that I like.

One of the reasons I wanted a tilting adapter over a normal adapter is I don't like how far the plate extends down into the air dam. It takes away from the aggressiveness of the front end. It might sound stupid, but I think it obstructs too much of the black portion of the bumper that makes it look aggressive. The tilting adapter allows that area to be shown to its fullest while placing something in that license plate recess. My other option was to make (or have made) a plate delete that only fills the recess, and nothing below it. I don't know of a design that I would want to use though. I would definitely need custom made to fill the recess width-wise, not surpass the recess height-wise, and accomodate the further apart holes. Of course while fitting the style of the car in the best possible way. I don't like not being completely happy with something like that.

I may still have you pick up a frame while you're there. Finding a frame for a Japanese license plate in the US is frustrating. You search for "Japanese License Plate Frame" and you get a bunch of US plates with "JDM AS F**K" and stupid stuff like that.

eBay! It's just a bit hard to find one for the right price, but they exist. Sellers like to sell the pair (front and back), and thats more than you really need to spend considering you are only using one plate. Unless you have multiple cars to stick them on.

And I'll definitely look up your DIY. I'm a little afraid to dive into it. It's awesome though, it comes with all the parts to build the wagon or sedan, and has a bunch of different accessories (like spoilers). I can legitimately build my exact car, minus the rims.

-Update-

I found the DIY and fooled around a bit with the model. I cut many of the body pieces out and sanded them smooth, and did a test fit. Everything fits great (even the front wagon bumper on the sedan)! I did as much as I can do until I go out and buy some paint and glue. I'm determined to make this thing look legit. It will have the S401/late model Blitzen spoiler, but thats ok, it looks close enough.

Also, I went out to get some daytime pictures of the front end with the Japanese license plate. It snowed a bit since last night.

Instead of drilling holes, I used heavy duty velcro for a few reasons. First of all, there was no way of exacting where the holes needed to be drilled, and I mean absolutely no way. No amount of searching through service manuals helped me, and my last resort was to see if the Subaru dealership could drill the holes from a template, but it sort of became apparent that the L series of the Legacy was never meant to have sideskirts, just judging by gaps in the rocker panel, and the dealership was likely to not have the template we needed since it was never an actual option that Subaru offered for the L series.

Why we chose velcro - well, we were going to use construction adhesive, but we didn't want something permanent if we messed up, and we didn't want to wait for it to try. We determined velcro was low profile enough and it provided a very good amount of adhesion for what was required. The actual clips are enough to keep the skirt on the car, but the places we used velcro for just keep the skirt snug to the body. We also chose outdoor heavy duty velcro, so there is no problem with it not sticking to metal and plastic, and it won't peel off in bad weather. Of course we cleaned everything with rubbing alcohol to make sure it all stuck good.

I keep telling myself this is only a temporary solution, but realistically, I probably won't get holes drilled until the velcro fails enough that I can't just reapply more and be happy with it. I think it looks good though.

Dead91silvia
01-06-2013, 12:06 PM
Use a couple of screws at the ends of the skirts as a way to make sure they dont somehow come off. Thats not a bad idea though. Have you also looked at 3M trim tape?

amgarrety
01-06-2013, 12:21 PM
I thought about tape, but I know how well Velcro holds up to a lateral tension, which was my biggest requirement, because if the skirt is stepped on, the clips will easily break under the skirt. So this is a nice semi-permanent solution. The Velcro actually held the entire skirt up by itself with no trouble at all before I put the heavy duty clips in the bottom. It took some force to even hear the Velcro start tearing.

The front has a bolt in it by design, but I do plan on re-enforcing the back just so if the Velcro and clips do fail, it won't drag on the road. But each skirt has 6 clips underneath and 7 mounting points inside which are secured with two different types of all weather Velcro (the traditional hook and loop and the thicker plastic stuff that is identical on each face).

That's just because I'm not a very good photographer

But yes, I took a drive down to Maryland today to visit Centennial Park (the location of the MD meet), which I will use to update the MD thread here shortly. Then I stopped by Yama's house to see project on the Blitzen, and actually to see it in person for the first time since paint. It is amazing the progress being made on it for being the first project of its type. I can tell where the frustation comes from though. Everything seems to be an obstacle on that car.

I did get some cool things while at his place though! Firstly, I acquired some tweeters, with only the passenger side cover. So if anyone has the drivers side cover, let me know. I'll gladly take it off your hands. My passenger side tweeter didn't appear to work when I hooked it up, but it was dark, so I probably didn't clip it in far enough or something. I'll try that side again when the sun can give me more light.

I also scored a lightweight crank pulley and a Japanese license plate frame, as well as some non-car related stuff. Big thanks to Yamazaki for hooking me up.

How different is the silver on the hood and bumper from the rest of the car? I am assuming that it is 01G (Platinum Silver Metallic) instead of 19X (Silver Stone Metallic)? It looks ever so slightly lighter in color in the pictures, but I was wondering how it was in real life.

amgarrety
01-25-2013, 05:16 PM
Actually, they switched to silver stone metallic at some point. My first hood came in platinum silver metallic, and the color was just a bit off, but this entire front end came in silver stone. That being said, it has less sun fading than the rest of my car, which is the reason for the slightly different color. It's only really noticeable in dark light (like cloudy weather or shadow).

Haha, we'll see. It depends on how much work Yamazaki has for you. If I can steal you to help me with some of it the day before, it'll be ready for the meet. I really only need professional help with cutting a spot in the rear bumper so I can lift my exhaust. I plan on getting the rims the day before and putting them on for the meet only, then swapping back to my snowflakes after until I can get better tires on the new rims, and if I can, I'd like to swap the suspension that weekend as well so I can give Yama my stock setup. Then I need to get my exhaust fixed ASAP.

Sorry that's the best picture I have of that particular grille right now. I've been inside sick most of the day, and now it is dark and snowing, so I had to dig up an old picture instead of snapping a new one.

While we're on the subject, since you have one now and I don't need to worry about it going anywhere for awhile, I think I've made the decision to put a pink Subaru emblem on the small honeycomb grille, and use it only for breast cancer awareness month. Then switch back to my current grille for the other 11 months.

Not much to really update as of now, although I guarantee the updates will be a little more substantial after February. Today was finally warm enough to get my Japanese license plate frame on today to clean up the look (it normally averages between 15 and 30 degrees here instate college, so I figured a 33 degree day was as good as I was going to get for awhile). I didn't get a picture, but there will be plenty of photos soon. The car is just too salty to get a good picture right now.

I also ordered brand new tires for my new rims that I'm getting at the end of the month. Those should arrive monday. That way I won't have to wait long to get the rims on, I can just mount them nearly immediately.

I have decided to put off lowering my car for a little bit, probably until spring. Finances aren't agreeing with me enough to make me want to pull the trigger on the springs quite yet. That means the shocks that I have will probably wait until I get the springs as well. That will also give me time to raise my exhaust, and if possible, grab a JDM rear bumper to make that job easier.

The good news is I am on the verge of landing a really nicely paying internship that will more than pay for my remaining modifications. That won't start until early May though, due to school, and chances are, I'll be doing much more saving than spending, but don't think that means I will be going to a period of no progress (much like what is currently happening). I do plan on still moving forward bit by bit.

For anyone who is curious, my remaining plans (aside from the rims and lowering the car) are to get the JDM rear bumper, get the JDM rear windshield/wiper motor/wiper assembly, possibly rear door windows that are factory tinted, and finally a better motor (shooting for STI).

I've also got to invest in heavy rust prevention after this winter. I'm very worried about rust starting on my car. No signs yet, but I'm not taking my chances.

I actually haven't looked into having it done professionally. What I plan on doing is buying 3M Rubberized Undercoating and getting a few areas where the undercoating is gone. I noticed a good amount was missing when I replaced my shifter linkage last fall, and since the car lived south of the rust belt, it was holding up fine. I think my procrastination has probably led to a bit of rust though. I won't know until the next time I look, and I'm afraid to. I'm hoping it is something I can sand away, paint, and undercoat.

I also need to paint where we cut the supports for the D-type headlights (something that should've been done long ago but I never had time), and I really need to replace my spoiler with one that isn't broken, and in doing that, I need to paint the holes that I drilled to mount the spoiler. I'm 99% sure I've got rust there already, and I might just buy a brand new trunk lid if the need arises.

And lastly, I'm going to be doing major cleaning and undercoating behind the mudguards on the inner fenders (both front and back) as water loves to accumulate there and form rust.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/02/eMCGMK8l-1.jpg

Next (very obvious) step is to lower my car. I also plan to repaint the rims a sort of metallic graphite at some point. I like the bronze but it might be a bit too dark for my taste.

Oh. And as some very 'observant' people pointed out, I may or may not have two different headlights. And I completely blame Yamazaki because he bought/installed them. As you'll be able to tell in the photos below, my divers side headlight is black, and the passengers side is a dark chrome, which, for anyone who knows the difference, means something special. The black belongs to a normal B4, and the chrome belongs to an S401.

Yep. And getting another S401 light to match will be nearly impossible/incredibly expensive (unless I get lucky). So I think I've decided to get another B4 headlight to match the drivers side, and then just take the S401 light and frame it. That seems fitting. Here are the lights side by side:

There are plenty of places that will chrome dip plastic parts... so it wouldn't be a big deal if that garnish can be removed from a disassembled headlight. You look capable enough.

That looks so good. I really need to do that. I just don't know the best way going about cutting my bumper.

Easy enough - buy an exhaust heat shield like this:
http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin ... er-104659/ (http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f153/subtle-03-08-forester-exhaust-heatshield-protector-carbon-fiber-104659/)

When you get it, take your dremel/cutting tool and slowly start cutting away enough material to mount the shield so that it sits flush with your bumper. Then shorten the exhaust hangers till the canister sits up in the bumper somewhat. You have plenty of room and flexion in the exhaust. The only issue might be clearing the trailing arms but an exhaust shop could rebend the pipe.

That looks like exactly what I need. I just need to find something that is a bit cheaper and is bigger so I can cut out more of the bumper. I'm going to need to get the entire exhaust redone anyway, so rebending the pipe won't be a problem.
