Cool car, is it an A/T? Did you get one of the rare (In North America) Sportshift transmissions?

drtylggy
12-22-2011, 09:36 PM
No just the normal automatic transmission... What is so special about the sport shift?

geckoboy86
12-22-2011, 10:38 PM
Short shift is the auto manual that you see in a lot of german cars. On the shifter you normally see P R D and then beside D is a section for + and -. This lets you control which gear you're in. Its like a manual without a clutch.

Small update. :smt026 Got a new alternator and battery. The alternator is a new OEM 90AMP to replace the one that was dying. The battery is a duralast gold top, upon looking into my last battery I realized the stock battery is only supposed to last 4 years. Mine was still kicking but dying at 8 years! :smt023 This car is a tank! I find pictures unecessary unless asked to add one.

How much of a difference does the new alternator feel...less dimming and stuff??

Hids are much brighter. Windows actually go down at a decent speed. Starts easier. The general stuff. Weird thing is I get this high pitch wine during idle. I'm sure its supposed to do that though lol.

My dad's BL does that now that he has HIDs. I think its fine.

Have some things to be put on the car in the spring. No pics as of yet but the list is as follows, gt cleared headlights, L7 grille, Subaru Badge of Ownership, two 10in. Subs, and kenwood amplifier. Nothing is ready to go on yet, saving up for all the parts before installing. As for the lights, I am getting Lamin-X vinyl covers, clear for the headlights and yellow for the fogs. I am removing my hids and buying the new Sylvania zXe halogen bulds, low, high, and fog lights. Painted the grille satin black already. And the subs still need wires and installment, I am not installing the subs myself as it is very complicated, so I'll just save the money and know it's been done right. Pictures will be up of the pile and as they are installed.

01-27-2013, 12:34 PM
Thanks amgarrety and chrish8r! The lights, grille, and badge will be on in spring, hopefully sooner. The subs won't be in for a while as I still owe my father money and the cost to buy the wires and install is a couple hundred, but well worth the wait. Also if anyone can help me understand how to install the lights (wires being the only question) that would be great. I was also looking for what the L7 grille stood for and came up with more questions than answers, so any help there would be nice as well.

The "L7" is just two "L", with one "L" upside down. No special meaning.

drtylggy
01-28-2013, 10:28 PM
That's what I read but I was also reading about a possible 7th star. Didn't know which one to trust. The two L's just seemed boring haha

Finally ordered my Sylvania zXe Halogens and lamin-x headlight wrap protectant, now to wait for it to ship. Clear for the headlights and yellow for the fogs. Hoping to get my lights and grille installed next weekend in time for the Maryland Meet. Also sent in for a vanity plate, now to wait for it to come in the mail. It will be saying LV 4SUBI

Installed my lights and grille yesterday :smt026 , tore out the HIDs and bought the new Sylvania zXe lights. I must say, these lights are 100X brighter than HIDs in halogen housings. :smt023 Too bad I bought the HIDs way back, I've had nothing but problems :smt022 the one fog light wire was correded and broke in half. But I got it fixed and I must say, it looks sick now! Pictures will be up over the weekend, between work, school, and valentines day, I won't have the time.

Went out for a little photoshoot a while back. Finally got around to uploading all the photos. Here's a run down of what has changed since the lights and grille. I added two 10 inch subwoofers powered by a kenwood amp, also added window tint which I have been waiting on for 6 months (FYI never go to The Installation Doctor). And lastly, added my badge of ownership to my vanity plate. Very happy with this car! Also had the chance to get a full graffiti wall in with my photoshoot which has been one of my dream photos, stoked with how it turned out.

Sick shot with the graffiti wall. Car looks great man, I love that blue!

I'm also digging that tint, is it 20%? I'm looking to tint my BH as soon as this semester is over and I'm on the fence with going 20% or 35%.

drtylggy
04-19-2013, 03:36 PM
Thank you. Yes, it is 20% tint. Originally I was getting 35% front 2 and 20% back 5 windows. But after five months of waiting and the tint being all 20% with bubbles, creases, dirt speckles (resulting from not cleaning the windows), and fingers in the tint; I decided to cut my loses and fix the issues myself :smt011 . 20% is a little dark in the front for my taste, but I love the way it looks. If I were you, I would do 35 and 20. FYI all this crap happened at The Installation Doctor in York, PA. Spread the word if you want.

Ouch, sorry to hear they screwed you on the installation. I've got a great tint guy at this place called advanced solar control in toms river, nj. So if you're ever in my neck of the woods and need something tinted he's your man! Haha.

I really want to do my front windows but I've been noticing more of a crackdown on illegal tint here in the Garden State. We can have whatever we want on all windows behind the front driver/passenger. I may have to see what gradients of tint they carry to decide whether to tint those or not. I'm definitely leaning towards the 20% for the rears though. :smt023

I have never heard of the Installation Doctor. Probably a good thing I havent. What did they charge?

drtylggy
04-20-2013, 01:41 PM
$149 for seven windows. The tint looks good until you look at it closely. But I did better myself so it angers me.

chrish8r

That price isnt too bad. If i want to use them, ill be sure to make sure it is perfect or i wont pay them or demand a refund.

Small update on the Subaru and future plans. I started thinking about life and started really questioning what to do with my car. I realized all the money I save goes to the car, and college. I made up my mind finally. I am already splitting all my pay checks to go into my college bills so I leave college with little debt, that leaves me with enough money to live and save a little. My heart dropped when I realized I have no saved money because once I have enough for my next upgrade, I get it. So I decided it's time that I get a good chunk of cash saved up in the event that I may crash my car or something like that were to pop up. Secondly, I am saving up for myself, my car looks fly, now it's time for me to join it. Already bought a new suit, now to save up that chunk of money. As I do so, I'm pondering the thought of two upgrades for after - 1. Borla UEL -or- 2. Rally bar and rally lights. The borla uel is cheaper and seems to be easier to install but the lights are functional for night driving. So as I put my car to the side, it's time to really think about my next upgrade.

Just as a side note, college bills are what makes my car so slow to upgrade, but I use that to my advantage to really try and figure out what is best for the car and what I want it to be when it is "finished".

Went out and kayaked for the first time today. I ended up LOVING it! So a put a plan into action. Save that 1grand as emergency money then get a UEL then save up for a thule roof rack, next save up for the kayak and accessories. I need money fast lol.

Bianrox
06-06-2013, 10:29 PM
Dang! And I thought I was the only one with a kayak vs. car dilemma on this forum haha
Side not on the thule racks for you. I just took mine off after two years of hauling and the rubber pads on the bottom of the the Thule foot pack barely left a mark. You might be tempted to go with a cheaper system but I know for a fact that the Thule ones work great (and we have the same car, basically) so spend the extra money. One thing I did to ensure additional protection was electrical tape my window trim so the foot-pack clamp was tightened down it didn't injure anything. Like I said, two years and it came off perfect. If you have any roofrack q's just pm me.

Quick question, did you get those clear headlights off ebay?? I'm on the fence right now between sticking mine in the oven and removing the amber manually or just buying new headlights. What made you take your course of action??

drtylggy
06-08-2013, 12:43 PM
Haha yeah, another dilemma arose as well, my dslr. I took it to a rally and the dust screwed up my zoom lens. Another set back that will run me around $400. Priorities are hard to follow in times like these hahaha. I am going all the way with the Thule setup, aero blades, the front cover thing to reduce noise even more and maybe the locks as well. I try not to go the cheap way out because it usually ends bad, so I patiently wait till I have the money to do it right. I'm glad I'm doing it right, I have been contemplating a roof rack for a while but had not real reason for it. They look good on our cars as well!

In regards to the lights, I bought them off of amgarrety, he baked them and took out the amber prior to him selling them. PM him if you want an in depth run through. He did a very good job with only one minor problem with it not sealing tight, but he fixed it. I'm not sure how though.

About a week ago I got a Speedy Racer UEL. Put it on and it fit great. The only issue I ran into was getting to the bolts at the flange between the cats and the header. So I dropped the cats and the header together, unplugging the o2 sensors as well instead of messing with them. I slapped the header on and was astonished by the sound. Then I noticed a constant vibration every time I hit 2K rpm. I didn't wrap the header before installing it and I noticed after looking at it again that the pipe coming from the right manifold was higher and was rubbing against the sway bar, brake line, and power steering line. After asking around for a solution I found that wrapping could help. So that's what I did.

I took it out again and the problem was still there. A little quieter but only for a while. After looking into it and asking around I realized that I should have wrapped it and sprayed it from the start to save the welds from rusting over time and to make the tone of the header deeper. I also inquired that denting it will give more clearance without restricting air flow. I wrapped it and sprayed it properly but did not dent it in fear that it would hurt the integrity of the header. I slapping it back on and fell in love with the noise even more.

But the story doesn't end there. :smt011 I got it up to 2k rpm and sure enough, it was still vibrating. I then jacked it up for the 5th day (yesterday) and tore it out once again. I did some eyeball measuring and starting beating the header; mostly out of anger. I got it down a good 1/4 inch and resprayed it for good measure. I then put it back on and revved it while it was still jacked up. My dad climbed underneath and noticed my heat shield for my cats vibrated when I revved heavily. We also found a rock stock in the shield. After removing the rock, and adding some heat wrap into the shield to prevent it from moving it was my last stand. :smt022

Dropping the car I reflected back over the past five days. I have spent everyday off from work under my car, and I was already past my breaking point. I turned on the car and went for a test cruise. And wallah!! No vibration! Only the deep patter of a proper sounding boxer!! :smt020 After all of this I would still recommend the Speedy Racer header to anyone.

Well, that brings you all up to speed on my car. Next thing to do is buy a grounding kit and some ground wire. I hear 20 gauge is a good wire but not sure what you guys might think. Feel free to give me advice.
