Long time no see! Hadn't had much to say, nothing really going on.
Here's the deal. My front brakes are trashed. I just got a set of Brembo rotors and Stoptech street performance pads. 159 bucks, free shipping from importrp.com to replace whatever was on the car. 98BK, 165K miles, I've had the car 2 years, put 40K of those miles on. Previous owner knew nothing about the brakes.. last week I had all sorts of grinding coming from the front left, I check it out and the rotor is trenched.
So since I'm running out of original parts to replace, here comes a brake job.

Question 1:
Stoptech requires for the SP pads to do 3 sets of 60MPH to 10MPH hard stops, ten times each set. Allowing for time for the brakes to cool between each set of 10. I am aware the brakes will act differently and stop distances will vary. How do I know my brakes are cool between sets? It'll be 45 degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow, 80 percent humidity at sea level. I'd like to get all 30 stops in on one drive but need to know how long do I drive around between sets of 10 waiting for the brakes to cool.

Question 2: and it's stupid
I can't just do this on a city street. Sixty to 10 suddenly requires room and I know some rural roads but I live in the city meaning I'm going to have to drive about 20 minutes to get there. Will just going through stop and go city traffic mess up the bedding process before I get a chance to do the bed-in procedures? Obviously I can't do this in town and there isn't a parking lot near me I can think of that has that sort of take off room. I think it might rain tomorrow or will have rained when I'm done installing so I don't know if that makes a difference in bedding.

I've read that all brake companies have their own bedding in procedures and they all vary from product to product as well. My procedures are different than the ones for the track pads. So I'm sticking to the plan, this is what they say is required, so be it. I just don't want to mess this up seeing how you really only have one chance to bed in brakes.

Bonus thought:
Yeah I know, get stainless brake lines.. well that wasn't in the budget. Having 3 brakes wasn't in the plan either but I know the brake lines will come up at some point so it's on my mind.

As always, thanks. I'll check back in when I wake up and I'm ready to go bust some knuckles.
(Hopefully I can remember where I put the Konig lugnut tool or this might be a short day)

You don't need to really do exactly what StopTech is recommending. It helps, but you can do SOME of it at say a big open parking lot, or along a rural road. Honestly I never even bother - I just install the hardware, and drive conservatively for the next day or so, and then every now and then I'll do a few harder stops (like hitting a clover-leaf on/off ramp highway system).

You can't mess up the pads by driving to your bedding in area. I run Stop Tech pads and Hawk pads without any issues.

Brake lines - not a huge concern unless yours are really soft in areas or rubbing somewhere, or if the fittings are corroding. Just a good brake bleed and you should be ready to roll.

Thats weird, I just upgraded my brakes and I'm using stoptech pads but the pads was scorched so no need to bed it in.

I wish I didn't throw the box away already. There was a line on the side of the box mentioning the composite materials do not required to be "scorched" but do require a bed in.
So.. I got the job done in an hour and a half. Hoses are fine. Did the husband / wife team brake bleed. "Keep pumping the brakes until I yell something"

It went so fast I thought "surely I've done something wrong.. can't be this quick"

I did half the bed in brake stops. Too much traffic. I was in a high school parking lot and that did alright. Could only get up to about 50 and my brakes were smoking like crazy the first few times. But I switched to a rural road because I felt like drag racing standing starts are getting ridiculous. I didn't want to kill my clutch just to burn some brakes in. But I did notice I went from "I have brakes.." to "my brakes are smoking like crazy and I can't stop.." "Now I stop just fine and there's no smoke."

So.. job accomplished.
