Just kidding. Love the color of the car. The intake mod, not so much. A Ganzflow style pipe into the stock air filter box is actually better for these cars - no heat soak on the intake.

I picked up my 5 speed for 100 bucks. A diff would be $50 and a driveshaft is like $40. Just throwing that out there.

Well that's you Nick. I'm not that lucky finding stuff, unless you consider finding a working 3rd gen 32gb ipod in a neon.

I will have updates in the next two weeks though.

Good for you, as it is your car after all. I get the same comments from people who think I have this imaginary money tree. Go at your own pace and I happen to kno that Harry is just playing. It does get a little out of hand when it's posted consistently in your personal thread. Keep modding the way you want, and other things will happen down the road.

And this is sooooooooooo true.

04Legacy
01-31-2012, 10:42 AM
Well I have a couple of mods at home that I'm waiting to do and some that I still need to order. I have a vision for this car and its going to take some time. Prolly like 2 or 3 years to have everything that I want done to it.

Yea i found it that the stock air box does better for city driving than for highway. I can get about 2-3 more miles in the city with the stock set up, but im getting about 2-3 more mpg on the highway with the sri. I think if I built a heat shield it would be a lot better.

Actually the hids i have in the car are the ones that move the bulb up and down not the ones that ones that have a flap in the bulb to switch from low beam to high beam. I have the actual Bi-xenon Dual Beam hl/low beam bulbs.

BTW Harry you have no room to talk cause you have done the same thing.

Andrew I think you were already told NOT to put HIDS in stock Halogens. And don't throw Harry into this beacuse at least his headlights were designed with projectors.

Steve posted this on your facebook and it needs to be brought up again.

"The Kelvin scale is only a scale of color, as you go up it you loose light."

4300k= White/yellow
5000k= White
6000k= White/slight blue
7000k= Blue
8000k= Blue/slight purple
9000k= Purple
10000k+ = RETARDED

Mine are either the 6 or 7k's they are not the blue like harry's, they are a lighter color. And i can bring harry in this cause he put hids in his halogen lights. Now since he jot his jdm lights which HAS A PROJECTOR in them, he can use the hids. Also mike does the same thing, dont start giving me crap when you know to other people who have done/ are doing the same thing.

Guys, I don't really want to get in the middle of this, but this isn't NASIOC. Don't bash someone's build. Its his car, and he has his right to build it the way he wants.

I personally like being a Subaru driver because Subaru drivers are some of the nicest people on the road, whether you drive a STI or a Legacy. Don't start giving Legacy drivers a bad rep, we're all friends here. To each his own style.

If you have criticism, that's ok, but like I said, it's his car. If you don't like it, don't do it to your car.

Don't let this site fall victim to the fate of NASIOC. Keep it nice guys.

Okay, I'm now going to unlock this thread - everyone's been warned about the fighting/bashing. We'll have none of that here. Constructive criticism is allowed, but let's keep it positive please. If it becomes a problem again, temporary bans may have to be enforced.

*Note* - the offending negative & arguing posts referred to have been deleted, so things may look slightly fragmented. I did the best I could to not take away any useful content.

The problem with HIDs is they don't focus well when reflected by a normal halogen housing. Im honestly not exactly sure why, I mean, in it's most simple form, the HID and halogen bulb do the same exact thing - they produce light. I know HIDs are often brighter, but there is a difference in the light too, and you can tell just by looking at it.

All that aside, here is the problem with HIDs in your current light housings. You have the single Hi/Lo housing, which means your reflector in the back is doing the job of both the high beam and low beam reflectors. The only thing that changes when you flick on your high beams is the light intensity. Since HIDs are naturally brighter, it's like having your hi beams on all the time, and there is just no way to fix that because that reflector in the back still has to do the job of both the high and low beam.

Personally, I switched to the GT lights for that exact reason. I wanted the low beams to actually have a cutoff, like they should, and I wanted the high beams to throw further, and they do now. I still wouldn't run HIDs unless you had projectors, but it would be more suitable in the GT lights because you won't directly blind people with your low beams.

I mean, some of it comes down to personal preference and how you want your car to look, but there is also that factor that if you are getting flashed often by oncoming cars, there is a hint to be taken there.

Dalton (drtylggy) has HIDs in his single bulb housings, and I don't think they look too bad. I think he has the 35W, which is definitely what I would recommend if you insist on running HIDs. 55W are almost too much for even projectors, let along halogen reflectors. I don't know how the Hi/Lo bulbs work, but if you have an option between 55W and 35W, do 35W.

I have driven the car now with hids for over a week and now one has flashed me. I have driving past a handful of cops and still no problems from them.

1. Thing you have to consider is what k rating you are getting. If you get a rating that is close to what stock cars have in them now and the color that the newer cars with projectors have you will have no problem from any one because they believe that is the stock color that the car comes with. 4,300-6,000k is what you want to have for driving lights. Because they are the most stock looking colors to you and to other drivers on the road.

2. There is no reason to go above 8,000k for hids unless you want to irritate other drivers on the road and make yourself look like a dick.

3. Actually some halogen reflector housings can run hids without blinding other drivers. It also helps to but a stock looking color in them too. Yes projectors help reflect the light better, but it doesn't mean they are better. It all depends on what kind of headlight and reflector housing you have.

I myself believe if you get the k hid and properly get your headlights aligned, then you will not have a problem with them, the police, or upset drivers.

I also will be doing some testing tonight and later this week on the dispersion of the light from inside of the car from the drivers aspect and some from outside of the car from the opposing drivers aspect. And will be posting those pics and some of the actually hid bulb in the headlight and out of it to show the difference in the bi-xenon dual beam bulbs and the ones that only have a switch/flap in the bulb to show what the actual dual beam bulbs are.

JDM housings are the same as halogen housings..

Except i've never heard of a single bulb dual intensity HID setup using a single reflector, as Nic's light housings are. All the JDM lights are dual lights and dual reflectors. Like I said, the single reflector is doing the job of low AND high beams. Thats why I argue that HIDs in a single bulb housing are a bad idea. It's like constant high beams if the bulb is bright enough.

I mean, correct me if im wrong, but i've never seen a Japanese car with the 9004 hi/lo setup using HIDs from factory.

You are not wrong.
And even the separate hi/lo housings are different between HID and halogen. Althought the difference seems so minor that most people don't notice....

I don't have an opinion either way on the matter, I'm just giving some facts here.

chuckthefuk
02-13-2012, 09:42 PM
I do not agree with you when the HID used is a Bi-xenon that is motorized..

I have seen this setup in action on multiple halogen housings..

Anyway's to each their own..

The way that my HID's work is that there is a magnet at the bottom of the bulb housing when lows are on the bulb stays extended out, when the high's are turn on the magnet sucks the bulb into the bulb housing.

These bulbs are the ones that have a flap in the bulb itself that switch the lighting for the hi/lows, these are not the true bi-xenon hids.

Yeah, that mechanism is nothing new, what chuck is saying is that the action doesn't really give you "high" beam, it just moves the already out of focus capsule to a different location, changing the location of the hotpot.

Anyway, I had HID's in the L headlamp as a first attempt, like I've said in other threads, the sheer light output of them HID capsule just overpowers the bad focus and makes everything look brighter. However, particularly on the L lamps, they tend to throw hotspots pretty badly, partly due to the HID capsule not being the same length as the 9007 bulb and because of the mediocre reflector design subaru used.

HID's coupled to the proper projector/reflector blows any "retrofit" out of the water because the tremendous lumen output of the HID's are being focused/distributed properly.

Also, 8000k will make it particularly hard to see in inclement weather, the bluer the light spectrum, the less contrast there is between objects. 4000k-5000k really is the most optimal temperature since its...wait for it...the same temp as daylight, which is what the human retina has been optimized to see at. But aside from the science, I had 6000k bulbs before on another setup and even that slight change made it hard for me to make out the difference between objects during rain and fog at night.

So I'm thinking about getting a new set of wheels for the summer. What do you guys think about the 2000-04 BH wheels on the BE's??

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/ipzCR_640480-1.jpg

^^^^^^^^^
Same design but gold outline in color

Or should I try to find the 03-04 LGT wheels, 2002-05 WRX wheels, or 2005-09 LGT wheels??

Also I can get another set of snowflakes locally if i want for really really cheap!!

Let me know what you think!!

I say 05-09LGT or 06-07WRX wheels. 18's would be perfect, but tire is expensive. 17's fill up the gap a little more. I don't like those outback rims because it's not sporty enough for me on a Legacy. It looks good on an outback though.

I have a set of 17' OEM wheels from a USDM WRX (Legacy GTB E-tune 2 in Japan). They are relatively cheap on ebay and would look clean on your BE.

So I saw another Legacy like mine with custom made eyelids and decided I wanted to do the same since I would some free time on my hands to work on the Legacy so I did just that. Not a major update but one that was kind-of fun to do.

What started out like this:
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/419744_364681253552668_100000323905230_1240068_1653222497_n.jpg

Finished like this:
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/64105_364681700219290_100000323905230_1240074_662737608_n.jpg

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/420239_364681433552650_855576520_n.jpg

Can't complain since it was very simple to do and didn't cost anything!!!

if that's only tape read the thread below and pull them off. the heat from your headlights will probably melt the tape

be careful putting tape on your headlights. it can cause them to crack due the the expansion when they heat up. but nevertheless they do look good.

Going a different approach with Joy right now because I want to work on mods for autox. Also you will have to wait for the color of these rims, some will like it and some will not, but o well. Plus i will be posting pics and videos of my autox runs.

I want to do breaking after i do a couple of events this year. Prolly do DBA drilled and slotted rotters with hawk hps pads. Power upgrades don't help unless you can put it to the ground.

Just a minor update, I got a set of 02-03 WRX rims for autox!! I finally picked out the color which will stay on the DL untill I have all if the rims done. I just got done painting the center caps and will be letting them cure/harden for the next few days before clearing them. Also I have some surprise parts that I also painted tonight. You guys will like the color of them, when they are all done.

Because i am fixing some curbage and nicks that are on the rims, i could have either used jb weld or body filler!!

Just a little update, all of the rims are all sanded down and primered. The JB Weld did a FANTASTIC job fixing the curbage and nicks.

It also helps when your neighbor worked in a body shop years ago

Tomorrow they should all be scuffed up and ready for (3x) paint.

P.S. xoSubieLegacyxo, GTDrifter, and nikolaus.conrad will have a chance tonight to look at the center caps of what the color will look like since they have been painted a week

where did you buy this lip at? the reason i ask is because that's not what an "actual" 94-97 integra type r front lip looks like (trust me on this)

USDM 98+ top, USDM 94-97 bottom
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/05/1994L-1.jpg

the lip you have is actually a civic type r style lip, designed to fit on a 94-97 integra. Big difference! ;-)

Also no one every had pics of what kind of front lip they had when they mounted them on the bumpers, i was taking a shot in the dark!! Couldn't I just cut the top of the lip where it would bolt up to the integra bumper off so it would sit flush on the bumper??

This is the exact lip that i got!!

Maybe I could shine some light on the front lip fitment,

I have the same bumper and lip, you will have to trim the front two corners of the lip. Im talking more specifically the surface that folds in at the top, once you trim that part down you should be able to wrap the lip around the sides of the bumper and fasten in the center as well as in the wheel wells.

Small update got forced to fix the rust on my trunk by only painting it then putting the wing back on. :smt011 The trunk looks like utter SHIT!! :smt013 My parets wouldnot let/ allow me to buy a new wingless trunk to have my wing trunk fixed for the rust and have the badge holes welded up. But what do I know, the rust is just going to come back and make it look worse! :smt010 I should just make them buy me a new trunk and have them pay for it to be fixed since it needs to last me 3 more years!! I wonder if my rear quarter panels will last that long since the are bubbiling up pretty nicely in 2 spots in each side.

Well my luck just went from bad to worse today!! Got my Inspection and found some things that i really didnot want to find!!

List
1. Head Gaskets are leaking externally after just being done 20k ago
2. Oil Drain plug leaking even though its tight, I mean TIGHT (also has a brass or copper o-ring on it, fluids were fine)
3. Transmission filter was loose and leaking oil all over the Tranny pan ( check fluids and were fine)
4. Oil residue on my driver side rack and pinion
5. Flange on my second cat is gone (completely rusted away)
6. Exhaust donut between 2nd cat and midpipe gone
7. Need a whole new exhaust system and/ or new Cat before putting on my uel header

Not a very good day, and not a very happy camper :smt013

I have no clue. The dealer that I bought the car from does the t-belts, HG's, and water pump. My dad told me that they also rebuilt number 1 and 2 cylinders. They were not that way last year when I check them so i'm guessing either the heads are bad, used bad gaskets, or torque specs are wrong. I need this to last me 3 more years through college. I have no idea how long the hg's will last. Either 6moths or a year.

chrish8r
07-17-2012, 11:25 PM
The dealer coupd have re used the head bolts. I just learned that they should only be used once. Because they are "torque-to-yield" l. Thwy actually stretch and expand to securely fit. I guess we learn something new all the time.

Well hopefully you get that all fixxed in a timely and cost efficient manner

yea hopefully if not im going to let her sit, sell her, or fix her. If i have to let her sit, ill buy a beater to get me to and from college. If they go, im going to redo the whole dang engine, new seals, gaskets, bolts etc for everything. im not going to cheap out on the motor.

I dont know what they did, they have told us that they use the heads from other cars that they take off that have already been machine etc, so that the car doesnot have to sit on the lot. I say bs to that cause then your not keeping original motor parts. I dont care if its cost effective, keep the same parts with the original motor.

the exhaust wasn't done right nic. if amgaretty (spelling) could fit his exhaust and make it look good then this should not have been a problem.

also if your lip broke off going up on ramps you should have ziptied it. that's how mines held on and half of it was ripped off after my car went over a parking block (long story and not my fault...i wasn't even driving) all I had to do was replace the zipties. Fix the fart can

redlegacygt
08-20-2012, 01:52 PM
yeah there's noway that should be facing downward like that. The only reason would be because the muffler is too wide, but that shouldn't be the case..

MRLancaster
08-20-2012, 01:54 PM
In the future, dont use ramps if you have a lip, or lowered. I never use ramps for that exact reason. It's impossible to get it onto ramps

08-20-2012, 04:18 PM
lol and let me be clear, my comments are not to be taken to be mean or negative in anyway. If you wanted to put a diesel stack for an exhaust i dont care, its your car..lol also, did you just put the muffler on or did the whole exhaust get changed? also, why worry about the heatshield with the new headers? did i miss something?

GTDrifter
08-20-2012, 04:31 PM
There's heat shields above the midpipe so maybe that's what he meant?

also I'm trying not to sound mean...its just my nature

04Legacy
08-20-2012, 08:16 PM

08-21-2012, 10:49 PM
I wonder if you couldn't use a dremel and a steady hand to cut a half circle cutout in the part of the bumper that tucks inward at the bottom to buy you a couple inches for clearance? I'm not bashing you...I have a tsudo exhaust waiting to go on the BD. I just don't wanna see ya rip the muffler off on the road and do damage and/or lose your investment.

04Legacy
08-23-2012, 01:18 AM
Tried a dremel and it melted the plastic. Also tried tin snips and that didn't work. Had to use a saws all to cut the opening that is stock on the bumper. The muffler is as far up as we could get it with out having to cut a lot out of the bumper. It sits flush with the bumper.

Need to cut plastic bumpers? Cut Off Wheel is the tool for the job

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/0910phr_19_z1966_ford_mustangcutoff_whee-1.jpg

Small diameter discs and no shield will do the trick. (always wear eye protection / face protection .. plastic heats up and turns in to molten liquid plastic!!)

Tape off area with masking tape / draw cut out line on masking tape / Cut / Shape / Angle the cut off wheel on a 45 degree and smooth out the edges / peel tape / done

the lights look great! I had to cut some of my rear bumper when i was trying to fit my dual tip muffler on. partially because in order for it to be welded straight, it had to clear the hole, and because the tips would've touched the factory cut out space so I dremeled out alot of it. even now, at some angles, it looks slanted but whatever. I cant do anything about it now. it fits the best it can fit.

I know you would love to see it lifted and with grabbers. Unfortunately I'm in the lowered scene right now. I'm thinking about going up to the gaps on friday night.

i'm usually up for a ride and usually so is my brother but not sure about the gas money situation. i only get paid every 2 weeks. but just remember i have some roads down my way as well(pine creek area) but not as many as the gaps. what i like about up in pine creek is that their are about 3 overlooks that are pretty cool.

Back from a long hiatus, and have some updates to make. Updated Mods list. Picture heavy
Also installed a NAPA The Legend battery after my old one died. Who knew a battery with 550cca would make a difference.
Also 110 amp alts and a grounding kit make a huge difference as well. Running 15 volts.

Wow, that's a really nice CAI!

You shouldn't have to worry too much about water since you haven't gotten rid of your fender liners and such. You just can't go into pools of water, oh well, you should probably avoid them anyways... Water can still get back there seeping around the fog lights, but otherwise should be fine.

Thanks! Yup hopefully shouldn't have to worry, but that is why I got the bypass valve. Just in case I decided to go swimming lol.

Thanks and so do I the crinkle red does stand out and look really good. A little time away did some good, plus I wanted to keep somethings on the DL.

Thanks, its getting there. Yea intake stuff is very hard for our cars, the CAI system is actually a FMIC kit from a WRX. Sometimes you just have to go for style points and make your own. Took a little bit to mock it up and and make it all fit and work perfectly. Still have a few little ideas for the intake setup. I can tell you that I didn't cheap out on the custom setup. Spent a little extra more to make it a little better looking and better performing.

I will give away that there will be some more engine bay additions that will help it look better. I have a few ideas in mind and tricks up my sleeve so stay tuned.

Also shout out to GTDrifter (Harry) for fixing my front lip for me, really appreciate it Harry!!!!!!
