2004 Legacy manual tranny question

[04Legacy]

I have a question for you guys. My uncle is looking at a 2004 35th anniversary edition 5spd Legacy. He took the car out for a test drive and the tranny was making noise when the car was on and off and when the tranny was in gear and out of gear.

Any of you know what could be wrong with the tranny???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

check the oil. also drive in a tight circle to see if the center diff is bad.

Center diff is good, there is no shutters, not throw out bearing, awd drives fine

the noise is coming from the output side of the tranny. its a continuous bearing noise when the car is running and not running.

I would say release bearing but since its constant I would go with noisy pilot bearing..

I've seen a few 95+ 5MT's have the pilot bearing fused to the flywheel.. constant noise and what not.

My uncle got the car, so hopefully in the next week or two we will know what is wrong with the tranny.

Depends entirely on the noise. If the noise is there at idle, could be something like a loose heat shield. Even an exhaust leak can sound "tinny".

How can a car make constant noise if it's off?

so if the car (engine) is off, are you pushing it around and hearing a noise? What kind of noise?

This is the info that my uncle gave me, i didnot test drive, and he is also a mechanic and doesnot know what it is
