i just purchased a pearl white Subaru SVX LS-L that has around 173,xxx miles on it. It has a 3.3L H6 that pushes 230 hp. the only downside to the car is that it takes premium fuel. but the fuel mileage compared to that of my legacy at regular grade is about the same if not better so i am quite satisfied.

Future Plans
--------------------
-Slotted rotors(done)
-Ceramic brake pads(done)
-K&N(or possibly Green) panel filter
-Window tint
---------------------

Current Modifications
---------------------

Exterior
-Red calipers
-6k HID low beams
-Super white high beam
-Tinted tails(questionable to keep)

Interior
-Silver painted interior
-LED footwell lighting

Performance
-Header back exhaust

Wheels/Brakes
-Motegi DP5 wheels
-Slotted rotors
-Ceramic pads

---------------------

Here are some pics of the car after i bought it

That's sick! Are you bringing it to longs park? I wanna see it!

Idk why, but I have a secret desire to own one of these. More than likely because its the only 2 door AWD H6 Subaru ever made! Can't wait to see it in person!

It will be at the longs park meet

Nice!

I have always wanted one too... before you buy wheels, make sure you research the bolt pattern. SVX's use a 5x114.3mm,
7.5x16" 5 lug unidirectional alloys, wheel Offset 55. A nice set of 05+ STi BBS wheels might work nicely, providing the hub bore is the same.

wheels and exhaust are on the top of my to do list dealing with aftermarket parts. and that 5x114.3 lug pattern is a real pain when looking for wheels. but craigslist has a few that i can snag and i can get away with up to like a +45 mm offset which i read on the barely used and weirdly configured svx forums.....

The Svx is suck a pig of a coupe. If you are looking for speed and power lighten it up a bit. They are great highway cruisers abd the 240 hp v6 is nice to get on.

Most SVX owners recommend ditching the power seats which saves a lot of weight, and the next weight reduction is a toss up between the exhaust, battery and swapping to a carbon fibre hood. The more difficult weight reduction is swapping the trans for a MT.

If you ran 205/55 16 tires you'd save some weight also...

01-03-2012, 08:29 PM
ill keep that in mind, but i have some more basic things i need to do before that. i believe it needs a nice tune-up, the usual suspect(rear wheel bearing), and some other odds and ends i am forgetting. but thank you all for the help

Nicee, I've always wanted a SVX so freakin Hard to find.. And because of that there's no junkyards that have them.. Ohwell I love it, i love it, i love it! hahaha. So are you still going to keep the Legacy?

chrish8r

I will still have the legacy. Ill have to wait till i have some extra money to fix it up

I just found 2 near me for $3000. Both are white like yours. Both are old enough for historic tags here which means no inspection or emissions tests!

chrish8r
01-04-2012, 11:21 AM
Yeah...if i get the legacy back in working order as a daily driver, o may put historic tags on this.

there are three bulbs, outside- low beam....middle- fog light......inside- high beam
i plan on taking the low beam to HID and making the middle foglight yellow. i will keep the high beam a normal color.

Hella sexy interior!!! i've never ever seen the inside of a SVX before some has a SVX locally for 1500bucks. I'm hitting my self cause if i wouldn't have gotten a TV and other stupid crap i could have it :)

01-04-2012, 06:50 PM
Wow...Never seen an interior of one of those...I like it. I love the slider for the head unit. You should get the 02-05 WRX 6 disc CD changer.

chrish8r
01-04-2012, 06:53 PM
I am looking to swap headunits but i need one with an aux cable or usb port. Oh and i prefer the double din ones so i dont have an open space

geckoboy86
01-04-2012, 08:05 PM
That's why I reccomend that unit, P123. Has a tape deck still so you can use that as an aux in with a cassette adapter.

It's oem so it's plug and play and has tht factory look. Its double din. You can usually get them for $40 or so.

just some updates and recent workings:

i bought some Nokya yellow fog light bulbs. they are not real bright or yellow.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120121_212044-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120121_212027-1.jpg

the trunk lift supports were pretty shot and the trunk lids on these cars(like everything else) are heavy. so i replaced them too.
Old one

New ones
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120122_121525-1.jpg

And the bad part......
i had bought some chrome motegi wheels with two new tires and two used tires for 220. i neglected to look at the last one on the pile before paying and leaving. it had some nasty curb rash and a possible bend. so needless to say i cleaned them up a little and cut my losses and sold them for 150. here they are

the horrid rash and bend

extensive pitting
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120110_091315-1.jpg

but i made out real well and bought another set of motegi rims for 100 that i am currently repainting duplicolor graphite.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120126_185144-1.jpg

and for 200 i bought some lightly used Riken Raptor tires

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/01/20120123_190622-1.jpg

i am also looking into getting an exhaust done up real soon cause my current one is starting to deteriorate(its 20 years old). i was quoted for 600 for a muffler and two cats so it is pretty decent i think.

chrish8r

so i got my exhaust done today. it runs all the way from the headers back. i got two high flow cats and a flowmaster 80 series. the whol thing only cost me $530 out the door. here is a little teaser:

Rint is on my to do list but the price for tint on these cars is probably ridiculous haha. Ive found some pretty nice looking aero goodies that would accent it quite well. Just need to find the money.

So im now trting to diagnose this stutter in the low rpms under acceleration and poor (13.5 mpg) gas mileage. Since my exhaust has recently been done, i have been trying the small and cheap possibilities before spending a substantial amount on a tune-up or O2 sensors. So far i used some Lucas oil fuel injector cleaner( not much difference) and today i am going to clean my MAF with the CRC mass air flow sensor cleaner and see if that helps. If not, ill have my handy speed shop diagnose it more in depth.

Oh and i just found a local SVX being parted out so i hope i can get a few parts off of him for cheap.

Every time I see this I want a SVX...
Everytime i saw one on cardomain(i know that site is pretty much done as far as tasteful cars are concerned) i would try and find one on craigslist and i finally found a reasonably priced one luckily. But the wagon is more practical for a DD. I quickly had to understand the differences between this and my wagon before i kill this car(which i hope not to do).

chrish8r
02-07-2012, 04:45 PM
So i just cleaned my MAF with CRC. will tell how well it works later tonight.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/20120207152238-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/20120207152247-1.jpg

and i noticed my radiator cap hissing(aka slightly leaking) but even worse is i took off the cap and saw this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/20120207152201-1.jpg
what should i do, flush it or buy a new one??

chrish8r
02-15-2012, 01:10 PM
MAF cleaner helped with pickup but not very noticeable. Well im going to use some radiator flush soon and see if the radiator will come clean.

Oh and the wheels i had put on recently had a below average balancing(harsh wobble at 50) done so i took them back and and they rebalanced them and now it is better. They said it had around 50 some lbs of what out ouf balanceness is measured by.

So i hope to get my car diagnosed at my local speed shop and know what is all wrong.

Huffer
02-15-2012, 02:41 PM
No need to use all these additives. Lucas is crap. If you want to clean your fuel system run some Seafoam or Chevron Techron.

When flushing your radiator, just drain the coolant, open the lower hose and run a cold water hose into it. Look for any leaks on the rad. Drain the water, and refill with the appropriate coolant. Let it cycle and drain it again, refilling with more coolant. You could do it again just in case but that should clean out a lot of the scale and deposits. Your poor MPG could easily be related to your right foot with the new exhaust, or a fouled spark plug.

chrish8r
02-15-2012, 03:10 PM
I agree my right foot is a big(bad) factor but not 5 mpg bad i dont think. And for the flush. I was thinking of just draining. Puting in prestone flush and run it, then drain. Refill with water, run, drain. Repeat till clear(er). Then put in the respective amount of coolant

chrish8r
02-15-2012, 11:13 PM
so i flushed and refilled my coolant today. ever since i did the first draining, the exhaust has a heavy white smoke. Im not sure what it could be??

chrish8r
02-16-2012, 04:28 PM
here is a picture after i drained the original coolant
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/20120215162539-1.jpg

the smoke has seemed to stop. i guess because i havent driven it for around two days before, i forgot the normal temp sensor position.

also had my oil changed today. 173,xxx miles. they just suggested i change my one belt because it is starting to crack.

I just found out that unlike my legacy, this car's low gas lamp actually works. Now if only i could get the gas gauge to work properly....

chrish8r
02-27-2012, 10:25 PM
Well this car must have had an illegal inspection by the previous owner because of the following problems that would not have formed in the past 3 months. so it turns out bot of my ball joints are soo worn that my mechanic at the speed shop said im lucky that they didnt pop out already. also i need the one axle replaced as well. i am gonna get the tranny flushed as well. oh and while he was looking it over, he found that there were some loose lines under the throttle bodies. these may have caused my accleration lag with letting unmetered air into the engine. he said i should have the car back by the end of the week or the start of the next week

chrish8r
03-01-2012, 11:17 PM
Picked up the car from the shop today and it seems to be functioning exceptionally better after all was fixxed. i was informed that the rims i bought(ones on now), on has a slight bend(nothing serious) and the tires are total crap. so it looks like ill be saving up to get brand new rims and tires for the late summer/early fall so i know the condition of what im buying.
ill hopefull be there on saturday for the meet in lancaster as well

and i am hoping that my mpg's get better. i was told my lines under the throttle bodies were loose and was letting in unmetered air. seems to be better. will fill you all in after my next few fill ups.

After talking with a lot of mechanics at a party this weekend, they all agreed upon one; I need to replace my O2 sensors. it is the only thing left that could be terrorizing my fuel mileage. they are NTK(NGK o2 sensor brand) and were like 37 bucks a piece. hopefully they will be on this weekend

ran some seafoam through it and it was fine for about 30 minutes then in started to act up again. found out that when i take the line off my pcv valve, there is no vacuum and there should be so im saying it is clogged. and also that mean the upper intake manifold will have to come off sometime to get that done. hopefully it fixes the problem and i can get back to more cosmetic stuff and trying to gather funds to get the hg done on my outback

Did you try adjusting the idle?

how would i go about adjusting idle??

Reason
04-27-2012, 03:53 PM
The throttle position sensor should have two screws on it. Loosen both slightly enough that it can move but totally loose. This is while the car is running. I think with these cars you want warm up idle at about 800rpms give or take 100. Move it around till your car has a good idle.

I suggest marking its current position before you do this just in case its not the problem and you can put it back where it was if you want.

Reason
04-27-2012, 03:54 PM
Also you should get a video of this idle problem. It makes it easier for us to help diagnosis the problem.

Not gonna lie, I love SVX's. As far grounding kits go, I've actually noticed a positive difference on older cars in the form of slightly brighter headlights etc. I don't think it'll make a huge difference in your car but it's not going to hurt it either. Also, I say fix the headgasket.

Im planning on once the outback is fixxed to make the SVX classic so i dont have to pay as much and wont drive it except to shows or meets. Id love to sell one but i wouldnt get enough to make up for what we have spent fixxing them very recently

Finding a ground can be tricky. If you have a multimeter you could check at the light itself. Try the connections with the multimeter both directions - batteries are DC current. If you read it the wrong way it wil show bad. I haven't messed with car electrical much, but checking your connections back from the headlight is a good starting point. Are your fuses good?

chrish8r
05-22-2012, 08:01 AM
Ive checked my fuses and they seem fine..but how would i use the multimeter to check a h3 bulb? It only has one metal spade connector. I lm not too good with a multimeter

Yokosilver
05-22-2012, 07:11 PM
The bulb itself isn't what you would check. you would check the wires going to the harness/connector. If you want to check the bulb, put it in the other headlight. If it turns on then the bulb is good. Unfortunatly, I have a 3rd gen so I can't pop my hood and poke around to try and help too much.

The concept behind the multimeter is fairly simple. Two ways to check your cables - check the resistance of the cables (set to read ohms - ?) and check the voltage (set to DCV). If you check the resistance, the power should be off and you need to have access to both ends of the cable you are testing. Set the dial to ? and place one lead on each end of the cable. If you get a number, should be low, that means that there are no breaks in that wire and it is good. If it reads high or OL (stands for overload), that means that the cable is weak or broken, respectively. If you check voltage, set the multimeter to read higher than the voltage required for your headlights. If you are using a 12v battery, set the multimeter to something higher than that, doesn't really matter which setting. If the connector is getting power, that means the bulb is bad (if you didn't already try the side by side swap of the bulb). If there is no power at the connector, search back to the source of the cable (possibly the back of the fuse box). If you can get ahold of a copy of the wiring diagram, I can show you where you would want to check for voltage/resistance.

So today i fixed my fog lights. Turns out it was as easy as a fuse. The hardest part was that it was a fuse.......
My kick panel fusebox was not appropriately labeled so I am led to believe it was replaced with one that wasnt correct.

Here is mine:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/20120605170532-1.jpg

And here is a picture of one I found online:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/underdashfusepanes-1.jpg

Notice anything missing??? The labels for front fogs, front wipers and (tel).

And while I was doing this, I finished clearing my headlights with Meguiars restoration kit. It works very well as I have used it in the past. But somehow I burnt a little line into the lense form probably pushing to hard and going to fast.

Here is the difference

rear:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/20120621192649-1.jpg

So after about 10 or so of the "break-in" stops, there is still a noticeable noise. It isnt a grinding but more like a scraping. Im hoping that it goes away in a day or two. Im not sure if it is normal because ive only ever changed pads, never new rotors and pads.

Did you use a heat gun to put the tint on the tails? If so, it shouldn't have turned out like that. Heating it up should make it super stretchy and therefore you end up with a perfectly smooth adhesion.

chrish8r
06-28-2012, 02:51 PM

As you can see in the "after" set of pictures, that halogen contrast in the light output is gone and my goal was accomplished.

chrish8r
07-12-2012, 04:43 PM
So I finally found some time to figure out the noise that my brakes were making. Turns out the fronts had the dust shield rubbing on the back of the rotor which accounted for most of the unbearable squeeling.

Here is where the passenger side was rubbing. It is the shiny part of the rusty dustshield:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/20120712135553-1.jpg

It still has a little noise which I believe has something to do with the pads on the driver side. So once they cool down after the test drive I just took, Ill be tearing them down to see if I can find anything.

And a side note. Brake cleaner is very noxious and strong. (<----first time user)

Thomistopheles
07-12-2012, 06:02 PM
And a side note. Brake cleaner is very noxious and strong. (<----first time user)
Brake cleaner and carb cleaner is serious shit. Respiratory and eye protection are a pretty good idea... and don't weld or torch something that you cleaned with it, it'll make phosgene gas and you'll wind up on dialysis or dead. The ONE time I didn't put on glasses while cleaning my block, it hit at just the right angle to send it right back into my eye. Burned worse than gasoline, spent 20 minutes flushing it. :smt013

chrish8r
07-12-2012, 06:09 PM
Yeah, I got a pretty good whiff of it and I was like WHOA!!

So I guess I should stop messing with things because now I took my driver pads off, looked at them(seemed straight and normal) then put them back on and took a test drive. Now the car pulls to the left a bit but the brakes seem more firm and assertive than they were before. Im not sure what I did but Ill most likely wait til tomorow to pull it apart again. URRRGGGHH.....

Huffer
07-13-2012, 03:52 PM
Make sure the pads are snug, but not rock tight. They need to move back into the bracket/caliper when the brake pedal is released and the rotor turns. You may also have some material inside the hat of the rotor that is rubbing on the hub - old rust etc.

chrish8r
07-14-2012, 02:01 PM
Okay so I took it apart and two things that I did may have caused it to stick. 1- I compressed the pistons one at a time, causing the other one to pop out a little. 2- the brake line was twisted because when i put the caliper back on, i flipped it 360 degrees. Hopefully that solves it because I have a car meet today. And it also elminated the noise.

chrish8r
07-14-2012, 10:22 PM

so Im going to try a new technique to tint my tail lights either this weekend or next week(depending on shipping). I like the look of the film but not the ugly corner folding. chrish8r
08-10-2012, 03:47 PM
So I am putting off on the plastidip and nightshade tint for the tails because I just dont have the time to do it currently. I did test it on my old legacy headlights and on about the 5th trial, it worked just how I anticipated.

But I just drove the SVX yesterday for the first time in a month and boy oh boy I forgot how loud the exhaust is!!! And the bad part is, I want to make it even louder....Mwhahahaha

Yep. That Abarth took 1st in the Chrysler/Dodge category which has a story all of its own to go with it about a guy being upset about it being in that category. But yeah, it belongs to a friend of xosubielegacyxo.

Seeing as Fiat own 25% of Chrysler and has options to increase that to 70% I'd say it should have been in a Fiat category.

So the car has failed to start yet again. So I am led to believe there is a draw somewhere. Could be the weird fuse to alternator wiring or the HIDs could be doing it.

That Abarth was friggen sweet, I saw it the last time I was down there. Maybe your alternator is bad? Take it off and go to Advanced Auto, they do free alternator testing! I went there to get the alternators on the Outback and Spitfire checked out.

Good looking car man!
Was curious if you had any lighting issues when you put your HIDs in. I had to get DDM's harness for my car because only one would light up. When I installed it I left the previous wires still connected and it seemed to work until I had a friend tell me one of my lights was out. I feel like they turn on work and then stop working after a while. Tried trouble shooting DDM's site and they talked about Day Time Running lights may be an issue. I know you don't have the same car as me but thought I'd ask

chrish8r
08-31-2012, 01:24 PM
I dont believe I had any issues with my HIDs. All I did was plug it all up to my stock plugs and put it in like a normal headlight. Im not too sure if daytime running lights would affect the headlights working or not...

Okay so I went an tried to get the battery/alternator tested at advance auto. Key work "tried".......

So the guy hooked up the machine to calibrate(note the car is running during this). He has me turn the car off and then on. See this is the good part, it doesnt start!!(suprise suprise) So we look at the possible fuses and none are blown(that we looked at) in either the underhood and kick panel locations. So he fiddles around with the positive side(zapped himself one time I think) and then puts a cap on it because the terminal is too small and the positive is a little loose on the battery terminal. He also tried the "hitting the starter with a hammer" trick and still nothing. So then he gets the jump pack from the store and tries to jump it.....nothing, not even so much as a optimistic click!! So then he pulls his diesel dually over and we jump it conventionally and voilla! it starts. But he did suggest that I take off the alternator and starter so I can bring them in a get them tested because it will just not work the way the car currently is(not starting and such).

So I plugged in the window motor/slide assembly I bought at the "u pull it" yard and it worked when I pushed it to go up, but just like the one that is already in the door, it wont go down. I noticed that on the wire that goes from the switch to the motor, there is a spot where the bare wire is exposed. So I guess my question is, would that cause the window to short out and not receive the "down" command to lower the window??

Interesting... The exposed wire has nothing to do with it, though. Unless, of course, the wire is being grounded out to the metal at some point. But, that would most certainly blow a fuse. My guess is that the motor isn't working correctly. How many motors have you been through? Also, do you have a voltage tester? How much power is being sent to the switch when the window switch is down or up? Are they consistant?

chrish8r
09-02-2012, 09:51 AM
I have no knowldege in the electrical field so i have no idea how to test any of that. But it does the same thing on a motor i picked up from the junkyard

You only tested the power side of the switch in the vid. Attach one end of your test light to one pin and the other side to the other pin of that connector and see if it lights in both directions. If it does, motor or regulator is most likely the problem. If it lights in the up position but not in the down position it is most likely a switch however more testing needs to be done to be sure.

Thank you. Ill try to do that(damn hurricane remnants making it rain every other minute.....). but im not entirely sure it will work with my current "testing" setup because the other side(not probe side) is for grounding. But Ill be honest in saying that I know absolutely nothing about electronics(but hopefully my next four years of electro-mechanical engineering will help me with that. haha)

Your test light should still work like that, all it is is just a light bulb in the handle and light bulbs don't have a polarity. Let us know the results.

Tip: If you have a hard time getting the clamp end on one of the terminals put a paperclip into the terminal and then clamp the end onto the paper clip.

So I hopped in the car today and took it for a nice little drive to get its fluids moving and keep it somewhat awake while I daily my Legacy. I got back to my house and went to put the driver side window down but accidently pushed the passenger window and.............................IT WENT DOWN!!! and more importantly back up. haha

So I think I know why it wasnt working before. Keep in mind that everything is the same stuff that was in the car before. I didnt put any of the junk yard pieces on. I believe that the one wire that had the rip in the insulator was shorting on the body(that part of the wire was the part that make the window go down) And that is why it would attempt to go up because that side was still flowing in the designated path. Hopefully that is it and I didnt just have some dumb luck that it happened just this once.

Plasti dip fail today!!!

I wanted to try some design in plasti dip to see how I liked it. The idea was cool but the execution was poor.

Stripe following the hood contour lines:

A trio of stripes at the top which when I went to pull the tape off(very carefully I may add) the plasti dip came off with it:

I used a small X-Acto knife cut the Plastidip along the edge of the tape before pulling it off shortly after spraying the last layer. Live and learn I suppose. I did the exact same thing when I first used plastidip on the chrome trim pieces on my car!

Pull the tape while it's wet, you'll have clean lines.

eekay
09-21-2012, 09:14 PM
+1 on pulling while still wet. Also, you could use a plastic "razor blade" to cut the lines as well. You should be able to find them at a local auto store. They're just really sharp razor blade shaped pieces of plastic. They're pretty handy to have.

hansvonaxion

But you have to use multiple layers so even if you pull while the last coat is wet you still have a few dry coats underneath.

I guess I will put it on super heavy by those bars and then take them off then do the other part with thinner layers.

Well, what I would do is put the tape down, spray and remove tape immediately. Then, do the same thing over and over. Just keep applying the tape and removing right after spray. It'll work.

Could work, if you can get all 3 stripes off before it starts drying and are careful enough to lay the new stripes exactly in line. When I sprayed on a hot day the stuff was drying almost instantly, on a cooler day it took a good 10 minutes. Maybe you could just make a mask (say, with a handle) that you just sit on the car and then lift off in one go once you've sprayed?

Back to getting the car in a better running condition....I want to take out the alternator to get it tested at the auto store.

My problem is that the tensioner assembly looka a lot different on this car than on my legacy....And Im not really sure how this tensioner works. Any help appreciated!!!!

Another question: Advance Auto has alternators for my car rated at 95 amps. NAPA has alternators rated at 110 amps. Why is there a difference in what remanufactured alternators if they should be for the same car??

chrish8r
09-30-2012, 07:03 PM

Did the alternator need to be removed after the idler and tensioner pulley? I remember changing the alternator on my mom's BH and I had to use the idler pulley to loosen/remove the serpentine belt and then remove the tensioner pulley to get the alternator's lower bolt out. Total P.I.T.A., really. Glad you got it all sorted out, though. Wish I had more ideas as to why the car is dying sporatically. My first guess would by bad alternator or something that either isn't grounded properly or always on. Stereo, lights, amp, etc...

chrish8r
10-09-2012, 11:21 PM
Alright so last week, I had charged my battery on a trickle charger and it filled up about halfway so I took it to Advanced Auto. I had the battery, starter and alternator tested. All were fine; the battery was low due to being discharged, the starter was fine and the alternator could be better but was sufficient.

Here is the printed slip:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/batterytest_zps404b9661-1.jpg

Well my inpsection was up as of October so I took it in and asked for them to look over my "electrical problem". My mechanic traced it to the HID system I am running. Idling, the battery measures 13.3v and when the HID headlights were on, it measured 12.7v.....he said that this quite a draw for just headlights. He would have looked further into it but that would have added cost on top of the inspection so I will look over it a bit myself. Oh, and according to him, I installed my tail light tint "after" it was inspected ;)

Huffer
10-10-2012, 10:00 AM
Um, hate to tell you, but as long as you are showing more than 12v at idle, regardless of your accessories/lights being on, your car is fine.

Is it possible that your HID ballast is "always on" ie connected to the battery directly, and not switching off when the ignition is off?

chrish8r
10-10-2012, 10:31 AM
Is it possible that your HID ballast is "always on" ie connected to the battery directly, and not switching off when the ignition is off?

He said he measured 11.5v with the lights in but i got my measurement when i got home. So im just thinking that some odd occurrence drained my battery.

As for my HIDs, they only connect to the factory headlight harness.

chrish8r
10-10-2012, 10:00 PM
Alrighty, so after I come home from my classes today(5:00 pm) I go to measure the batterys voltage and it is at around 11.3v.......I tried to start it and not even a click. Could it be that the battery has a normal drain but it is a the teetering point where it needs just a little more "umph" to start the car??

Edit: I took out the HIDs and put in the stock bulbs....The driver side bulb connector is loose and doesnt click on to the bulb. Could this cause a problem??

98legwag
10-16-2012, 09:21 AM
Any update on this? A friend has a similar issue on his Legacy. He has HID fogs and projectors.

chrish8r
10-16-2012, 09:42 AM
I put my stock lights in and the voltage still dropped so there has to be a draw somewhere else but im not too electrically inclined.

chrish8r
10-20-2012, 08:47 PM
So I checked the voltage again today and the battery had 3.59 volts!!!!! Both the postive and negative battery terminal clamps are loose so I believe that may be a part of my troubles. does that sound right??

chrish8r
10-22-2012, 04:24 PM
So I replaced the terminal clamps and charged the battery on a trickle charger for about 6 hours. I went to start the car and all I got was a quick click and nothing. it wont click when I turn the key after the first one. About 10 seconds pass and it will give another click and nothing for a little after that. The car seems to "die" when I turn the key. also, some of the normal dashlights dont come on....

any suggestions or helpful pointer???

02_Legacy
10-22-2012, 04:34 PM
Loose clamps will not cause a battery to go dead, but they may cause some other issues so it is good that you got them replaced anyways. I would say charge the battery longer, a trickle charger is ment to stay on a battery all day, and if a battery is really dead you may need more amperage than a trickle charger can produce to actually charge the battery. Do you have a multimeter that can measure amperage? My best guess is that you have a parasitic draw. Have you ever tested for parasitic draw?

chrish8r
10-23-2012, 08:28 AM
I do have a multimeter. How would I measure amperage? I did the voltage and it was 11.8 volts.

02_Legacy
10-23-2012, 09:38 AM
Not all multimeters read amperage if one of the options is an A and it has 3 or more places where the test leads can connect then it probably reads amperage otherwise it probably doesn't. And 11.8 volts is a pretty dead battery. Fully charged is 12.6 and anything under 12 is considered dead. Get it up at least to 12.4

chrish8r
10-23-2012, 10:00 AM

02_Legacy
10-23-2012, 09:04 PM
hmm I don't know what too tell you about not turning over with a jump start, electrical problems are hard to troubleshoot over the internet. It could be a starter then, but that would not explain why your battery keeps going bad, are you sure that you had a good connection with your clamps? was your legacy running or not?

In order to do a tranny swap to a manual in a SVX will cost anywhere from 3500 and up

02_Legacy
10-24-2012, 07:25 PM
ya that is within specs, did you ever disrupt the path? In order to get an accurate reading you have to measure without loosing the path of flow. So you cant just disconnect the cable and then hook up your meter, you need to hook up the meter then disconnect the terminal.

At this point, i believe it was the battery. It seems that something just drained the battery really low and the short drives i would take it on wouldnt recharge it to a useable level.....also, i heard that jumping a battery a lot can cause the cells to short out and drain

I charged the battery overnight so i could drive the car and move the fluids around and make sure its all working. I was thinking of what may be causing this drain of the battery. I think that the culprit may be the "jerry-rigged" alternator plug. The wires were just fed through and are not held in there except for the actual plugging in part on the alternator.

So I guess my main question is this: Where can I get one of these plugs(or harnesses) to replace this and see if this helps. Thank you.

Here is the plug I am talking about:

So I took of the alternator plug to jog my memory of how "ghetto rigged" it was. Well the wires are loose and the one crimp has part of the wire sticking out and is loose on the spade. I will probably try and dig into fixxing this soon.

Here is what the plug looks like:

I stripped and put crimped on new spade connectors on last week but forgot to charge the battery so Ive had it on the charger for the last 4 days. Put in the battery yesterday and it started. I drove it around for probably 10 minutes(the gas gauge is below empty but the gauges in these cars dont read accurately at all!!!). Ill probably see if the charge has held in a day or two. Im really hoping to be able to drive this car around reliably once spring comes around!!

It came as no suprise that the car didnt start.....

Today I took the battery to Sears(where I bought it) to exchange it for a new one because it is under warranty. I read that when a battery goes completely dead, it will not function as well as a used one that has never gone dead.

They told me it was dead but they insisted on charging it for me. They said it couldnt be replaced because it could hold a charge(my ass it can hold a charge!) but whatever...

I put it in when I got home and went to start the car, NOTHING!! There were a few clicks and all the dash lights came on semi bright.

I checked the volts, around 13.2v. I looked around and found this:

The distribution block the previous owner has inline between the alternator and fuse box. It looks to be severely melted on the side going to the fuse box.

Could this be the culprit to my electrical issues? And if so, how would I go about fixing it? Thank you.

remove it?

remove it?

I plan to do that but the problem is that I dont know how to wire it once i do remove it. It is a single wire returning from the alternator that coms out as two wris that feed into the fuse box.

Not sure if that part of the harness is separate
try looking here

Here is where the wires form the melted side go into the fuse box:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/02/20130209_143819_zps2d741679-1.jpg

4 wires come out of the melted side. 2 red wires on one terminal, and a red wire and white wire out of the other one. The one red wire is the one on the top left of the picture. The fuse is labeled as "SBF (abs)". The other two red wires go into the Black/Brown plug on the right. That connects under the normal fuses. The remaining white wire seems to go to the Fan relays at the top.

So I ordered a new distribution block just to see if that will fix my issue. That should hopefully be here within the next week. That way I could take it to a place to possibly have the wiring redone in a logical and most importantly safe way.

Where the output wires melted the plastic cover:

The melted side of the fuse(the blade was very maliable):

So my new Scosche distribution block came in the mail today. It is a Scoshce E2 EADB2 that uses the AGU fuses instead. I just used 30 amp fuses like the last block had.

In the car, hooked up:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/02/20130216_123318_zps866ad217-2.jpg

Now the car did not run after just doing this. I had to mess around with stuff to actually have the car start. I had a jump starter pack hooked up and the car still wouldnt start....

It finally started when I was trying to test the starter for voltage. I wedged the cover of the bolt on the starter too the side and put the positive lead on it. I then went and tried to crank to see if the voltage was constant and the car fired right up!! I have no idea what I did. maybe the conjuction of the two grounds by the starter needed a bump to get better contact. Or maybe the starter wasnt making great contact......Who knows?

Now hopefully the car will not give me fits. But knowing my luck, thats not gonna be the case.

Still haven't finished her yet!

She's been in the garage for a while now, can't wait to drive her! I bought her with the 3rd and 4rd gear not working so I couldn't of tried her well so I am impatient to drive the Svx!

True, but i have no doubt you will be able to do it.

The car needed to be jump started today but it has been sitting for a week atleast.

I wanted to go out hooning in the snow but the snow turned to rain around noon and melted most of the snow on the roads and parking lots....

I managed to find a narrow lot at a baseball field to do a few launches in. The snow was more of a slush at this point....

For the remainder of this week, i dont really need a daily. I have spring break and dont need to do a thing. Haha. But hopefully the wagon will be worked on over the weekend. But if need be, i will be driving this for a few days....

So the car did not want to start today. I hooked up the jumpstarted, not much help. I remembered that it started after I played with the one starter wire last time, so that is what I did. I slightly moved the one wire and the car started right up. This makes me believe there is a bad connection on the starter that could possibly be causing a draw.
