Exhaust cutouts

I want to get a cutout for my exhaust system and thus far am thinking of getting this one you see here in the link but I'd also like to hear other people's thoughts and experiences with cutouts.

These units are bombarded by road debri, dirt and salt on a daily basis.. If you do not use the cutout often then the butterfly valve tends to seize or stick.

Often if not maintained the screws/bolts vibrate loose and well.. it sucks..

You do understand that going from a somewhat properly designed back-pressure exhaust system to a Wide-Open-Hole is going to create noise/reduce performance and just rice!

These units are great when installed on a forced induction system.

Just my 0.02 cents.. do what you want.. just know that you have been warned.

Actually I was planning on attaching it or welding it to the exhaust, the piping part anyways not have it straight open and I understand everything you’re talking about and believe you 100% but I'm one that sometimes I'd like to try something out myself due to doing so in the future with a few things and it working out and doing better than it did for the other person.

Also what does it do when you say reduces performance though? I don't drift or race my legacy’s but if this is something id fill even with daily driving then I'd like to know more about it.

Cutouts are for V8S or large turbo cars like Chuck said. I would never waste my time on anything but an electronic cut out.

Then you're not reading the purpose for the cut-out system - this is taken directly from your link:

AWAY from mufflers means you will 1) be making the car louder 2) the idea behind this is that it is supposed to increase flow.

On your car, with your current engine, it will 1) make the car louder 2) decrease exhaust velocity and thus power.

You will be loud, and slower.

Ok then you need a muffler with a removeable silencer. I was looking this route also for a quieter joy ride with the family (prob never use it though :) )!

Same but i just wanted to make it quiet so I can drive sometimes without you hearing my sexy boxer rumble but Like Huffers said, pretty much this is starting to sound pointless to me now. lol

And do those removeable silencer even work? I've only seen hondas with them on there mufflers and the ones I saw just made it go from sounding like a can full of bees to a spitting noise.

They actually make some nice ones. I will have to find the thread I started. I had one for my 240sx in CA while I was in the Navy. The slide in and bolt right down. I only used it oncem but it made the same sound just a lot more quiet.

Oh it was dual tip ad well. The make a mechanical operating muffler too that can block off a bit of the muffler to quiet it down.

Yeah i saw a video on youtube along time ago about an exhaust for an STI that has a system like a cutout in the muffler to block sound only, but not even sure what the exhaust or video was called.

I hope to find one that will fit the OBX muffler I have coming in the mail today.

If you want to use this as a "silencer" mod then you will have to weld in a resonator after the cutout and then route it back into your exhaust.

I have seen people do this but its a pro vs con. Weight vs Practicality.

Its not a big deal it just would be badass to have an exhaust system but be able to make it as quiet as stock but yet being able to go back to the sexy boxer rumble.

Chill? I have been very "cool" about this.. I even gave you an example of what to do if you choose the silencer method.

Its not a bad idea but I have to ask.. What setup do you have that the boxer rumble is loud?

I've had UEL headers + 2.25" hi-flow cat + 2.25" midpipe + sti muffler and the valvetraine noise is louder then the exhaust?

Straight pipes or turbo muffler canisters make the boxer rumble loud and raspy?

My current setup is stock single ports + stock cats + 2.5" mid pipe + turbo muffler canister and its loud enough to vibrate the wax out of my ears..

as chuck has pointed out, this is something that is very doable.

the important questions here are, what is your current exhaust set up (please be specific)? would you like to make your current set up quieter or louder? and of course, how much are you willing to spend to make this work? tell me this and i will do my best to walk you through what you might need to make it work...

And for the above to work you would need to have the cut out valve installed in the strait pipe that doesn't have the new resonator in it.

I don't mind my rumble, I love it and its not loud like what yawl are thinking about at all, all I'm running is stock cats, headers and i have 2.5" piping attatched to that with a fart can like muffler as some would call it. My car sounds sexy but I'm going to be changing my exhaust up though, infact look what came in today. :smile:

This will be going on my leggy, probably going to add more then just a new muffler but Ill be doing research before I buy anything else. btw what brand of headers if any fit the ej22?
