I'm looking into doing a swap from a n/a 2.2 to a n/a 2.5 and wanna know what I need to look forward to when it's time. a friend forund me one out of a '97 outback close to my home, but wont be able to get it untill tax season. he told me that the wiring harness should plug right in, but I want to get a few opinion about it before I buy it.

It is a phase 1 or phase 2 2.2? Like my 99 is a phase 2 so I can direct swap using the heads but use my 2.2l intake manifold, if yours is a phase 1 2.2l then you should reuse your heads and intake manifold to have frankenstein motors.

if it's the same phase, it's a direct swap, don't waste time with a franken motor if the 2.5 is in good condition. My 97' L has a 97' GT motor in it, all plug and play wiring, no codes, no drama. Just more torque. It's a couple hour ordeal, nothing scary at all.

Exhaust ports might be different... But any thing pre-98 you shouldnt have a problem.

Is this the same for any 2.5? I have a 95L and was thinking about doing this.

My expierance was going the other way around from a 2.5 --> 2.2 on a 98 limited. I had to switch the exhaust from dual port to single port. I know some 95's are actually dual port anyways, so heres to hoping you dont have to deal with that extra expence. The swap was easy because the smaller engine left me plenty of room to work with, the 2.5 is a little more cramped, but otherwise is plug in and play.
Here is where i made a $1,500 mistake, and id hate to hear of anybody doing the same. At one point i had my torque converter out of the transmission, and didnt seat it properly when putting it back in the vehicle. I instead used the bolts in the bell housing to draw the trans and engine back together. This destroyed my front pump in the transmission, and had to have a shop do the work... MAKE SURE.. ur torque converter is seated properly, and enjoy the extra horse power!!!!!!
